This is misleading and most people won't understand what you're saying. He means the metering light needs to be hitting around there while recording and mixing. The volume nob has no affect on gain but only volume of what we hear.

Agree. He could have added more context. If he’s using that channel knob as input gain, then that means he MUST be sending it to another channel. Idk why, but that seems to ALWAYS get skipped over in tutorial videos.

@@ssserotonin1373 because the level knob doesn’t affect the signal when recording. The only knob that affects the signal when recording is the knob on your interface. The only way that level knob can affect a signal is if you’re printing into Edison and Edison is loaded onto your master track, or you have that channel routed to a different channel and printing into Edison on the routed channel.

@@Bagheera_Smoov why do so many people send their vocal chains to another aux? Is parallel comp that serious? I sonically hear mine on one aux no send and it sounds good? Maybe a small reverb send but nothing else

You def can go lower then-15db but you have to go by how much detail is preserved via your ears and not your eyes.

Right I’m usually at -18 on most tracks, sometimes down to -20 on 808 and bass line

Worse comes to worse, if all vocals are sitting on the beat to your liking and it does happen to not have headroom just drop the gain level of the whole mix before mastering..
