I miss crispy gaugee! Hopefully I can come back to Hawaii by the end of the year or next year. The gaugee at Laie chop suey is pretty good, though I'm not a huge fan of the rest of their food.

I kind of go Gau Gee crazy whenever I'm back in the islands. My wife does not understand it that much, but no matter. It makes me happy!😀

Most definitely a Hawaii thing. My favorite crispy gau gee was from the old McCully Chop Suey. Too bad they are long gone. I know a bunch of Chinese Americans in the SF Bay Area and they never heard of it before. Just like meat jun in Korean restaurants, it's a Hawaii thing. Though someone mentioned in the comments for Amanda & Felix Eats that there was a place up here that had. Hey, here's an idea, you should do a collaboration with Amanda and Felix!

We're probably going to start doing collaborations in the future. There are a couple of other channels we've been communicating with, but the idea hasn't come up yet.

I just personally like the taste of Crispy Gau Gee. While I tend to prefer more of a balance between filling and wrapper, I would not kick the heavily filled ones out of bed for eating crackers. 😉

Can't really go wrong with any of them. And you just can't find real Crispy Gau Gee on the mainland anywhere.

I love every iteration of gaugee, but I’m especially partial to gaugee mein soup. A long time ago a guy named Raymond made ridiculously good gaugee at his Kalihi restaurant, Mee Lin. His was different. The was had a wonderful mix of pork, chunky shrimp, and water chestnut, along with a bit of sesame oil. But it had this really nice snap when you bit into it, and a juicy tenderness. I’ll never forget it, and haven’t had any like it since. Most places, gaugee has a disappointing, mealy, ground meat texture.

Kelly's Coffee Shop made the best Crispy Gau Gee Mein I ever had. I miss it to this day.

Best is New Mui Kwai in Kailua! Whenever I go home, I head straight for them to get my gau gee fix!!

Thanks! I'll try it next time I'm on Oahu. I usually make it over to the Windward side at least once a trip. I just checked. It looks like it's in Kaneohe. Is that the one you meant?

Roast Duck Kitchen the char siu fried rice is really ono !

Gotta try that next time I'm in town! Their Char Siu is about as good as I've found on Oahu nowadays.

Many people haven't. You can only get them in Hawaii, and I started missing them after I left. That's why we posted this video. Try them when you visit the islands!

I love their manapua and some of their other dim sum. But their Crispy Gau Gee are a little too greasy for me.

Hmmm, to me your criteria is a good balance of meat and crunch. To me, that's like saying I like an apple with equal skin and apple. The crisp part of gau gee is a wrap and by definition secondary to the main part. We laud or praise manapua, half-moon, pork hash, etc. by the amount of meat, Likewise, gau gee. With that said, enjoying food is personal taste. Waimalu gau gee #1.

I think that a good balance is important. I don't think that equal quantities of wrap and filling are a good balance.

Very good. They just have a little too much meat for me. That's the only reason that Roast Duck Kitchen beat it out.
