A minute or so in, and no mention of Louie Cole? He inspired me to pick up the Sticks. He was smashing out Jungle and D&B Beats over a Decade ago!

I thought he would mention Clive Deamer, who played live D&B drums for Roni size Represent band in Bristol at their live gigs over 25 years a go.. He was a monster. There is a very short live cut on the New forms album of his gig drumming. (Mercury music prize winning album) He Also played Drum and bass rhythms on a Radiohead album and trip hop drum breaks for Portishead.

You should put "drum and bass" and "drum'n'bass" somewhere in the description and in the tags (if they're not there already) to try to make sure that people don't miss this video while searching.

those two consecutive 16th-notes on the snare you address at around 11:00 min are a pretty common move in jungle drumming.. for intermediate drummers, it's much easier to sort of 'cheat' and play it hand to hand, like you did (lR), but in the long run, it's a pretty useful technical skill to be able to play that with JUST your left hand (or whichever hand is your snare hand). You know, the kind of snapping motion that's required to pull off a ghost note followed by an accented note. Gives your sound a bit more consistency when that one hihat note isn't missing everytime you do the 'daDAK' thing. After all, we're trying to emulate electronically produced (layered) tracks, so paying attention to little details like that can matter imho. Think about the way these grooves are made in a DAW - multiple (at least two) loops stacked on top of each other. That (at least to me) implies that a drummer trying to emulate this kind of sound should stay away from purely linear stickings/orchestrations as much as possible. Jojo's godlike left-hand skills are a great, albeit EXTREMELY advanced example of this - he pretty much never interrupts his lead hand patterns, no matter what's going on in his snare hand. cheers

Great Video and great perspective! I always build Jungle Beats off of the Amen Break-- I'm surprised you didn't mention it, where does it fit in compared to the 2 beats you demonstrated? Also, it's worth mentioning that this is also an incredible guide for Producers looking to program realistic, "playable" beats.
@OogaB0oga
@OogaB0oga 3 жыл бұрын
yeah, I was honestly a little disappointed that Nate never mentioned the Amen break, and its utter importance to the rise of Jungle /D'n'B. I feel like breaking down the amen break and explaining how producers in the 90's (maybe already in the late 80's) started using a sped up (and often chopped up) version of this isolated drum sample to create these iconic jungle grooves would be a great starting point for any student to get into D'n'B drumming. Just my 2 cents
@5ycey7.n.84
@5ycey7.n.84 2 жыл бұрын
I was surprised by that too especially when he went into that whole idea of "photek-ing" a beat, which is actually just one of the most common ways jungle producers chop the amen break. Seems like he was moreso talking about the more nerdy, music theory oriented side of "jungle" than the hardcore rave side where literally every song has the amen.

Great vid! PLEASE talk about the amen - It’s a game changing beat by a funk group, adopted by every genre known to man. Let the people know where their favorite music comes from. It would be awesome if you did a whole vid on Amen Brother and it’s magic, or even the winstons and their drummer, or who has incorporated it. I feel like this is an avenue that few drummers have ventured down, and is neglected in the percussion world. Come on Nate! We dnb heads/drummers need you!

It's hard to quantify how much further down the D&B rabbit hole JoJo is than, basically everyone else. I used to be into it 20 years ago- Goldie and the like.. Gets' a bit repetitive, but it's a great set of licks to develop.

Clive Deamer from Roni size represent band was an awesome D&B drummer live. Heard him do some long solos at Malcom X centre gig in Bristol in 96, WAS BLOWN AWAY. Goldies Heritage orchestra had two drummers at Wolverhampton gig in 2017, not sure who they were but played a full gig together faultless. Inner city life and Pressure was crazy with live drums. Photek scored drums on that album.
