Sam takes a close look at 3 categories of (NRS) Negative Rake Scrapers: NRS's with two symmetrical bevels, Specialty scrapers, and NRS's with a round end. He shows tools from each category, sharpens a few, and demonstrates using these tools in various turning situations. Sam, thanks for your reply. Wanted to thank you for your excellent videos. Straight forward, covering important subjects, well done and thank you for that. Wanted to share an observation as a new turner. Turning got a whole lot more enjoyable once I was sharpening effectively. Fine lathe, good tools, good techniques, is still not fun when a guy's tools are not sharp. I believe that sharpening is the most basic skill that then leads to everything else. Please continue making videos, they are truly excellent and greatly appreciated.

Sam, this has to be one of the most valuable instructional videos I've seen in a long, long time. I hit the "save" button so quickly you wouldn't believe it. One major point is that some tools are too short to sharpen on a wide platform IF they are handled. I love being able to remove handles and take full advantage of a nice, flat platform. I have some short parting tools that would be impossible to sharpen correctly if the handles were attached. I made similar comments on a Mike Peace video just yesterday. I depend heavily on jigs, fixtures, sharpening systems, etc. I especially appreciate your inclusion of angles on the bevels of different configurations of NR scrapers. Thanks again for the help!

Hi Sam, thanks for another very informative video. With experience I’ve come to prefer using a round nose NR scraper on the outside of a vessel. It has a much longer edge which equals more time at the lathe and less time at the grinder. (It also avoids those potentially embarrassing 90 degree corners contacting the wood😂).

Sam, i just reviewed your you tube video on negative rake scrapers. Did I miss the angles that you have on that Boxmaster four angled scraper that you like so well? If not, what are they set at: the side angles and the tip angles. thank you. JTFIII

Very informative. I may try to make one of those soon, I could totally use one. On a seperate note. is there anything you recommend to make out of the metal dowel left on the end of a spindle gouge, once I have ground off the entire flute?

Easier than all of that math. I had to replace a CI Sq carbide cutter. Rockler didn't have the appropriate negative bevel scraper, so I bought the standard. When I started turning, I had a hell of a time with the scraper catching the corners (pen turning). So what did I do? I looked at the back end rake, turned the whole thing over, and used the back side as a negative rake scraper. NO hitches. NO binding, just beautiful curls.

April, I have a few carbide type tools-mostly for hollowing. I find them very aggressive and at time difficult to control. I recently bought one for turning the inside of lidded boxes and it is just hard to control. (Maybe its me???) Thanks for your comment. Sam

Very useful, Sam. Question- why would you ever need to sharpen the top bevel on a NRS? I always figured I only needed to do that when I used up enough of the steel?

Sam, you didn’t say what grit your CBN wheel is in your demo on the right side of the Steel City grinder. Is it a 180 grit? Is 180 grit the best for raising a burr on scrapers? Do you use higher grit wheels for other purposes… like the 350 or 600 grit wheels?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, on the right side it is an 80 grit wheel. The left wheel is 180. I do not have any wheel that is finer than 180. Sam

Sam. i noticed you were working with a robust lathe and stated that your lathe was turning at 1400 rpm. My robust lathe out of the box does not have a way to know the speed of the lathe. What did you do on your lathe to give you that information?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 11 ай бұрын
It sounds like you have the American Beauty Lathe. That is probably what you saw in the video. If you look at the speed dial on the remote control unit, there is a scale around the dial. There are two scales for the two belt positions. This will tell you pretty accurately what speed you’re turning at. Let me know if you have another question. Thanks, Sam.
