I might have said this before, but I love the idea of rounding the tenons rather than squaring the mortises. The efficiencies gained in time and the reduction of error potential is obvious as it can be... and I like it because it just kinda thumbs its nose as the crusty old coots who insist the only good mortis is a square one. :)

Delighted with the course content - it's well worth the price (even though I was dumb enough to miss the deadline for the early bird price.....) An unexpected bonus was the plans being supplied in Metric measurements as well as Imperial...... It's really helpful to have the comparison sections for choices such as wood for the bench and finishing products with pros and cons of each carefully explained. I'd recommend this course to others and look forward to getting started on my bench!

Great looking bench and not overly fancy or complicated. Did you have to level the top after assembly or are you are just super skilled at the jointer? I built my workbench 20 years ago as one of my first projects, and the top was not flat at all. A few years ago I finally tried the router sled method and it worked great. It was easy and didn't take long at all even with just a 3/4" bit.
@frank3283
@frank3283 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose that depends on your finished thickness of each slab (they'd have to be exactly the same thickness) and whether or not each slab ended up coplaner after installation. I also went the router sled route on my bench because each half was way too big to wrangle onto the jointer. It worked fine and got it flat enough.

This is a great bench build. Videos & plans on TWW Guild are great. I bought the plans and am in the middle of putting the Top together. The plans and video call for two 11" Tops so they line up with the side of the bench. Question: is there an issue with making the two tops 12 1/4 and over-hanging them on each side? I'd like a larger top and looked at all the videos; can't see an issue but wanted to ask.
@MrLinksmainman
@MrLinksmainman 2 жыл бұрын
I think Chris addresses this in his video? If you over hang it you can't use the dog holes on the side to clamp a board nicely against the side to work on the edge. But I suppose that's not a problem if you use a router and template or just a jointer?

@lolaa2200
@lolaa2200 2 жыл бұрын
If you plan on building a workbench i strongly recommend you read Christopher Schwartz's book (the first one, i think it's the blue one). He discuss the lumber and state that there is pro and cons in both hard and soft wood it's just a matter of what's your priority. Some people actually want pine benchtop because it's less slippery and if you drop a workpiece you'd better knock the bench than the piece. I build mine out of doug fir because my workshop is outside with just 3wall and a roof so i needed a wood that would happily endure winter humidity and summer dry cycle as well as pest attacks without chemical. Doug fir was ticking all those marks better than oak or beech regardless of the cost. The cons is a doug fir top will never be flat, no matter what you do the summer/winter woodgrain ridges will become slight grooves. Oh and because the winter wood is so dense and the winter wood much less, don't expect to drill a hole exactly where you want in sidegrain doug fir, the wood will decide where the hole goes. It's just trade off, only you can know what's the best trade off for your particular situation, cost is certainly a factor but not the only one.

Ive found round dog holes convenient when you have a contoured surface. If you clamp using the bench dogs, the bench dogs sort of spin in the hole to match the tangent of the contour. Of course it is easier to dent the surface because all of your pressure is localized on the Maxima of the contour but you can use a softer intermediate material.
