This is theCUBE's latest episode in our series, The Road to Intelligent Data Apps, which focuses on the evolution of the modern data stack into the new platform for applications, or what we’re calling “the sixth data platform.” This modern data stack is becoming the new platform for applications as raw cloud infrastructure recedes into the background. In this series, we feature insights from some of the brightest minds in the tech world.
For this episode, theCUBE Research principal analyst Shelly Kramer welcomes Bob Muglia, who pretty much needs no introduction, certainly within the tech industry.
Check out the latest from theCUBE, including upcoming tech events www.thecube.net/
Bob was president of the precursor to Microsoft’s Enterprise Division, growing it to $14 billion in revenue. Most recently, Bob was CEO of Snowflake, leading it from $0 revenue and guiding the company to an IPO, which was the largest ever debut of an enterprise software company. Today, Bob is an investor, advisor and mentor to some of the most exciting companies driving the evolution of the modern data stack. Bob is also the author of The Datapreneurs, which focuses on the promise of AI and the creators who are building our future.

Our conversation explored what’s involved in building a modern data platform, as well as a deep dive into the five major data platforms in use today: Databricks, Snowflake, Microsoft, Google, and AWS, comparing and contrasting their capabilities, market differentiators and challenges they face.
Keep up to date on the latest from “The Road to Intelligent Data Apps” series • The Road to Intelligen...
We also explored the role we expect generative AI to play in accelerating all aspects of application development (e.g. for modeling data and the business), as well as a discussion around the role of Relational Knowledge Graph in reimagining data and apps.
As expected, Bob had great insights to share and the conversation is truly the ultimate insider’s guide to the future of the modern data stack.

I believe that a semantic layer in modern data stacks has to be enabled using AI (now with the help of GenAI), doing it old ways of programming based approach won’t work as data constructs in real world keep changing. I strongly believe that persistence layer will change in general and for data savvy use cases in particular with a forceful entry of vector databases. Great dialogue! I loved every bit of it! Bob broke it down to first principles. George didn’t want to leave any aspects of the discussion in addressed. Amazing questions. Shelly provided the meta control of the discussion… very effectively.

BTW semantic layer is scattered around in so many places today, code, files, relational databases, SQL, stored procedures, and analytical databases/date warehouses. Hard part is that it’s living in more than one place even for individual domains. Without having CIM like model (in CMDB domain) approach, industry by industry as foundational semantic layers, it seems like mission impossible:)

Nice discussion - Bob the work on semantic knowledge graphs reminds of the groundbreaking 1980 paper by Hammer and and McCloud 'Semantic Data Model' - SIM was a semantic database built late 1980s a bit too early

We're glad you enjoyed it - and you're right re the Semantic Data Model being a bit before its time.
