@mohibhumayun 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-id6su3nz4q Colloquially, 'unsex me here' can be translated as give me pleasure , unlike the true meaning where Lady Macbeth is asking divine figures to get rid of her maternal and feminine instincts and make her more masculine. So, when Mr. Salles says "Go and unsex yourself with the next video", he essentially says to go and pleasure yourself with the next video - a comedic way of just saying to watch the next video. Hope that helps.

My notes on the video:) "Look like the Innocent flower but be the serpent under't" Language: - Simile: at the top where she tells her beautiful husband to look even more beautiful and look like the innocent flower - Metaphor: where she's actually giving an instruction, you must do it - Choice of vocab- Adjectives: innocent and under't Flower ---> the word flower itself is symbolic of innocence and beauty in nature. By adding the adjective "innocent" she highlights and emphasizes that for Macbeth to complete the task, he must amplify his performance of "the milk of human kindness" Flower also associates with femininity, previously she rejects her femininity, but in here, she is putting that femininity onto him and giving him that "female role" --> which foreshadows chaos + things are not going to go in favor for him as that type of character does not fit a murderer or a king. The tone shifts at the second half of the command, with the alliteration "but be", not an option, Be the serpent "under't" - flower symbolizes goodness and contrastingly serpents symbolizes bad, she is emphasizing that he must keep his evil + dark side close by = because a) she is worried that he will go back to being good because he is too full of the "milk of human kindness", she is trying to make sure that he does not relapse. "serpent" - reference to Christianity, Adam and Eve and importance of running away from the true evils inside. Whereas in this, she is encouraging him to embrace this evil side. Moreover, serpents are quite hidden in nature when compared to flowers hence she is being very specific with her instructions, be the innocence openly like a flower but attack and contain the evil within when hidden, this is because she can't risk anything going wrong. Structure: - sprinkling / granulizing - Shakespeare provides dramatic irony and little details about everything that may happen + the character little by little, he gradually builds it up and spreads out across the text. - Form: act one- macbeth was brave, he was chopping enemies from the nave to the chaps and now he's being a beautiful flower. Pace is structural feature but the pace is fast in this text because of the form- a play. - Juxtaposition of gender roles and how everything is flipped upside down- LM is trying to make her husband, into something that a man in a patriarchal society did not be- a man was not known for being nice, or innocent, so shakespeare sprinkles these ideas across the text because he is turning the gender roles upside down, which ultimately by the end of the play leads to Macbeth's downfall (and LM committing suicide because being the dominant, powerful role, was not "supposed" to be her job. - It is important that shakespeare tries to portray this couple failing to acquire the power because he was paid to write this play to be performed in the courts of King James + political fear was nobles at court too fantasized the idea of their rights to claim the throne, which meant going against social, gender and religious rules leading to tragedy (such as that portrayed in this play) Context: Patriarchy - The idea that everyone who is trying to gain more power- the witches, lady macbeth are all trying to orchestrate this assassination of king Duncan, hence the play begins by entertaining the power women have, but ultimately, at the end, the Witches get told off my their superior, Hectate and LM gets killed. Hence this structure of the play reinforces the patriarchy - "women are not allowed to have power + not safe having power = power is not meant to be synonymous with women" - Likewise, Macbeth almost forgets society in his pursuit of power, he lets her make him the innocent flower when he was in the eyes of the rest of the characters, was known to be the perfect embodiment of a patriarchal man - "Bellona's bridegroom", etc. Therefore patriarchy in one way, had its benefits for him, it defined who he is and how he must behave, however when he tried diverting from it, it all cracked. - Judith Butler - looked at performance, she said that sex is fixed but gender can be changed, she used the analogy of the wardrobe of gender, if you want to be a strong powerful man the performance of him includes strong voice and wide shoulders and etc. But with a performance, it only last so long, sooner or later, you need to take off the costume --> go back to who you really are. This quote shows how LM is telling Macbeth to perform - innocent to the world, but evil inside, LM is trying to perform a strong powerful woman (in "unsex me here") ---> crucial because they are juxtaposed / contradictions to one another. Their performance is what kills them gradually across the play. even the witches: thru the portrayal of them in Banquo's words - in a very masculine manner --> they must fit the criteria of the witches, their behavior and appearance. Link to act 2 when LM performs to be the innocent woman in society getting freaked out over duncan's death even tho she was the person who planned it out. A performance can take place, but the true colors will always eventually come out. Good luck guys on your revision 🤧My literature exam is this Thursday & Friday 😭 Thanks Mr Salles and Mr Everything english for this revision video, it was absolutely perfect💟

I'm in my first year of uni now (studying compsci), and I would like to thank both of you (as well as the other GCSE and A-Level teachers on KZfaq) for where I've gotten to today. Even though I hated English language and literature (I was more of a maths and science guy), I always looked forward to watching Mr Salles' and Mr Everything English's videos because I just loved they way they made everything so clear and always gave unique ideas that got me 9s in essays (and inspired me to start coming up with my own too). I was, and always will, keep recommending you guys to younger family members who are doing their GCSEs. I'll still stay subscribed as a way of saying thank you, and to remind me of those days. Also as a little motivation for the people that are sitting the exam soon, you've got this! In the next couple of days, watch these videos carefully and make a plan of how to structure everything. Note down some key quotes for each topic and practice analysing them (and if possible do peer marking with a friend). Unseen poems should be of a similar topic to the poems you've already studied - all you need to do is apply a similar analysis to them (it will help you practice writing essays that aren't memorised). Don't forget to get some good sleep and eat well - without those, you won't be able to reap the fruits of your revision. Good luck!

Currently, I'm in year 9 going into year 10, and my class was studying Macbeth. For an end-of-year exam, we had to write a literature essay based on Macbeth's character development. I prepared about a week beforehand using your videos, and on the day of the exam I walked into that classroom with confidence, and effortlessly wrote my essay in two hours. I just got my marks back, and apparently I got full marks! It's a big deal to me since I've never gotten full marks on an English exam (an essay one). Additionally, my English teacher said that my essay was on par with an A grade GCSE one! I was quite flattered, but I just couldn't believe my eyes! Technically, I know that grades in year 9 aren't that 'important' and it's nothing compared to say, year 11, but I just wanted to say thank you for your effort. Your way of teaching is really engaging! Keep up the effort, thank you so much!

also the idea of the serpent being one of the seven deadly sins; the serpent sin of envy. This could link to many ideas in the play such as Lady Macbeth being envious of Macbeth's power and his strong masculinity or it could be Macbeth envying Duncan for his divine appointed position as King

i forgot to add but only the lion sin of pride is viewed as weighing down your soul more which could highlight how Macbeth's ( and perhaps Lady Macbeth's ) hubris weighed them down and was ultimately both of their downfalls

That's a really good point! It can be easily linked to the bible(adam +eve), (the first sin) and how it resonates with the audience because the court of King James was christian.

@@davina793 absolutely. The idea of original sin links with Macbeth being doomed from the start of the play like the conventional Greek tragedy

QUICK MESSY NOTES FROM VIDEO "Look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under't" language - simile + metapor adective "innocent" emphasises and highlights how important it is to act innocent. - flower - femeninty onto macbeth but she rejected her own femeninty previously in "unsex me here" Macebth is somewhat having to wear a female role thiswb foreshadows how things are no going o go well for him because a female role does not fit a murderer or king in the jafobean era. -"but be the serpent under't" - tone changes from the first half of the quote to being more aggressiv and demanding. telling him to keep his dark side under because shes worried he will relapsed to be a good soldier because he is "too full of the milk ofhuman kindness" "serpent"- original sin, instead of running from the sin she wants him to be more like it . structure - switching their gender roles as it leads to tragedy. shakespeare sprinkles ideas of evil nature throughout the play. -propoganda piece thus why the couple fails to gain poweras it performed ih the play; going against religious roles and gender roles will lead to tragedy. -Patriarchy - structure of the play reinforces the patriacrchy that women are not allowed to have power and theyr5e not safe having power. Macbeth almolst forgets about society in his persuit of power he lets her make him in a "innocent flower". contrast of his past ways when he was a soldier. Argue patriarchy had his benefits for him because he it clearly defines how he is and how he needs to behave since after going against that, things disoriantate. Gender as performence - Judith Butler -sex is fixed but your gender can be changed "wardrobe of gender" performence only lasts so long. Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth to perform as a stronger man and be more evil but the performence is lost as they both crumble. Lady Macbeth as a strong powerful woman in "unsex me here" and Macbeth is trying to be fake and innocent to the world but evil inside though theyre both contradictions and juxtapositions because their performence is what kills them in the end. Overall- gender being a performence in the play and for these characters SORRY THEYRE MESSY AND THERE MAY BE MISTAKES BUT ENJOY AND GOOD LUCK FOR TOMORROW )
