Another tip: Guide studs. Take 2-3 bolts the same size as hold the item on, but an inch or two longer. Cut the heads off and grind a dull point. Screw these into the block (or whatever) loosely and then you can use them to guide the cover into exactly the right place and keep it there while you put in the rest of the real bolts (not tight yet) then thread the guide studs out and replace them with bolts. The more awkward the access the more this helps. In a pinch you can use wooden dowels held in with grease.

Good advice, I'm working on my wife's car in my upholstery shop I'll have to try this. I wasn't looking forward to holding the gasket on and lining everything up . We don't typically use 3M 77 in my shop because it'll fail in high heat application, like headliners or car upholstery but I might have a can stuffed in the back of the fire cabinet is great for a temp tack

I dropped the pan on my cars transmission this afternoon to replace the filter. The pan gasket I bought is rubber and it was bunched up in a cardboard box so the gasket will not sit flat. Your solution will save the day tomorrow when I go to install the pan with the new gasket. I have a can of the 3M 77 and will use it as you demonstrate. Thank you for posting this.

77 is a permanent bond. They do make spray adhesive that is repositionable. It still sticks pretty good until you go to peel it off. That's what you look for, repositionable spray adhesive. 3M 45 sticks pretty good too. Then there's the 90 which is the forget about it spray. Want to take it apart? Forget about it!

And no excess squeeze-out on the inside to eventually break loose and clog up the oil system. Down side is no gap fill on dinged up surfaces, otherwise, great tip.

Would it work for holding a gasket to a catalytic converter (gasket mates the cat to the engine) to aid in preventing the gasket from slipping while bolting on the cat? Wondering since cats run at very high temp.

Shellac like Indian Head brand is decent stuff. It gets very hard and flakes well when scraping. It's used instead of a gasket. This with a gasket is probably better. I prefer a proper gasket dressing spray. Permatex and others make a copper one. But if switching from shellac to a gasket, beware of clearances changing, ex transmission shafts. Sometimes it doesn't matter. Sometimes it's critical.
