Been waiting for this one. Best cymbals in the world to my hands and ears. Meinl traditional and brilliant byzance cymbals are just the all around versatile cymbals I use for everything. For practice I use the extra dry and vintage line for lower volume and dry sound. My favorite cymbals are the 14 inch byzance traditional thin hats, 18 inch brilliant thin crash, the 21 inch byzance traditional polyphonic ride, the 22 inch byzance vintage pure light ride, and the 20 inch byzance traditional China.

This is great and exactly what I was looking for as I was recently introduced to these cymbals on a friend's kit and thought the sounds were unique and interesting. I appreciate the side-by-side video as this helps me to hear the differences in tones and resonance of each of the cymbals. well done.

Fantastic stuff boyz -- thanks for doing this. I have a set of the Meinl Traditional's (the same set you all used but I think my ride is a 21") that I've had since 2013. To my ears they're the most even and overall pleasing sound to me that can pretty much work for almost any style depending on the player. Record really well which is important to me. From this vid I also really like the Brilliant and Pure Alloy Custom. Interestingly, for ride cymbals I favor the Dual or Dark line, so,...I will probably mix one of those in here soon. I also like the Sand ride.

I've owned and played just about every series from Meinl (except for the Foundry Reserve), and I can say that they're the real deal. Their cymbals have consistently been great, the quality has been outstanding, the customer/warranty support has been second to none, and their commitment to innovating and covering every side of the tonal spectrum has them being heads and shoulders above the other manufacturers. This video was well done, with both the cymbals and even the drums sounding top notch. If I have one criticism for the video, it's the exclusion of the HCS Bronze series. It's easy to exclude them because they're less expensive and made of B8, but considering they're Meinl's only B8 line with its own range of specialty models (trash splash, trash crashes, trash chinas, and bells), it only makes sense to include them with the rest of their lineup.

This is a brilliant idea, brilliantly executed. Thank you for providing such a valuable service. Sure, a drummer interested in these cymbals will still want to play them live in a store before making such an investment. But this video is much superior to the usual sound samples on manufacturer sites, which either give you an identical pattern played on the cymbal with no other drums or cymbals in the sample (Paiste), or give you that plus the cymbals played along to a generic rock track (Sabian). This video lets you see and hear the cymbals played by a live drummer you can witness with your own eyes. Crucial project, perfectly executed. Ten out of ten. Cheers!

Yes, back in the days they only made budget cymbals which sounded cheap. The first Meinl which sounded good to my ears were the Raker (late 80ies) and Amun (in the late 90ies). With the Bycance they entered the top brands of cymbal manufacturers.

Have to agree. My 15" foundry reserve hi hats are my pride and joy. Love my sand ride, but I have to say they have to age to sound their best - the new ones like on this video don't sound the same, needs a few years of patina on it! Other than that, 18" dual crash, 20" extra thin hammered crash, 20" equilibrium China, fat stack, baby stack, and 8" brilliant splash, but I have my eye on a few more..

Meinl is the only company that accounts for every cymbal line to mix and match when they design their cymbal sounds. The only complaint I have, that would be absolutely awesome, is a raw bell hybrid that was 3000 g's or more. The raw bell ride was a cutting ride, but it was dark and usually in the 3600 g range.

For me, I really like the pure alloy dark and the dark custom dual. I think both sound amazing. I try not to look at a brand when I go for cymbals just focus on the sound and the inspiration they provide. I am currently using the A custom line but with quick beat hats and loving that especially the 21" sweet ride. However, after listening to that Byzance Brilliant ride I might have to invest asap.

Those Pure Alloy Customs sound fantastic and embody everything I want to hear in a crash cymbal and more. Nice cutting attack with a quick, breathy, and complex medium-low undertone that lets you know it's there before getting out of the way right on time. Because of the way you guys are really attacking the crashes, this is the best Meinl crash demo I've heard to date. Fantastic job as usual. Also, I don't know if it's the mics, the Weathermasters, or both, but those Ludwig toms are throatier and more attack-laden than any Ludwig demo I've seen you guys make!

@@escadrums2 also each cymbal is hand hammered so even the same exact size and model will sound different from each other based on weight and slight human differences in the hammering but mostly the weight. I would never buy a Meinl cymbal off a site like sweetwater or guitar center cause you are just hoping to get lucky and find the right sounding one. They are all gonna sound great but some are drier than others or trashier or heavier or thinner and so on. I only buy my meinls on mycymbal Memphis drum shop or other sites like that where you can hear the demo of the EXACT cymbal you are purchasing and buy that exact one in that demo.

I had a similar revelation... Thinking the 22" jazz light ride would make an awesome crash ride... maybe with some sizzle to it 🤔

Great video! I've got Meinls across all Byzance lines except Dual and Extra Dry and this video speaks pretty accurately to the differences between lines. One or two of the cymbals here I have and they sound a little different in my space (to be expected) to the recordings here - as a tool to understand the ranges this is excellent. Any prospective shoppers should also be aware there are some gems hidden within these ranges which aren't featured here (22" Raw Bell Ride for instance) which are kinda like unique outliers. Again, really excellent work team!

Totally dude! They have all these special cymbals within each line that you gotta look out for

Definitly. My two favorite cymbals…the traditional polyphonic ride and the traditional byzance thin hats which I prefer over the medium hats. They should’ve covered the artist concept line too with all of those amazing stacks. The fat stack is one of my all time favorite cymbals as well and equillibrium China.

loved the video like any other videos you guys make. I find all the drum content you guys make entertaining and so good even if I don't care for the topic haha. The foundry reserves are definitely my favorite Meinl cymbals. I have to say though that I personally was a little disappointed to how they felt. They sound buttery but don't feel buttery :( Also quick question in your guy's drum comparison videos is there any audio processing being done in the "full mix"? If there is I know it is very minimal but was just wondering if there's even the slightest being done.
@drumcenternh

There is processing done in the full mix. I am careful to preserve the character and detail, so I do as little as possible. Mainly there is subtle EQ to get the sound closer to what it really sounds like in the room since microphones hear things differently than your ears do.

started a Zildjian guy, went to Sabian because Mr Weckl did, ended up at Meinl because they sound like what i hear in my head. the first thing i would add that i don't have is one (or more) Extra Dry Dual crashes. they're nearly perfect. also, yes, those drums sound sweet. i have more shell packs than i should, but i have to admit, they sound really nice.

For someone who has been a long time Sabian aficionado, I think this great video and demonstration of Meinl cymbals has me more interested! Do you have any general series and pairing recommendations for someone with a combination of AAX, AA and HH series Sabians? I've typically gone for the bright sounds, but I'm not really certain I want to make the jump to Meinl's brilliant cymbals as I really enjoy some of the vintage and darker, washy sounds, and so far I'm not digging the brilliant sounds of Meinl, such as the classic customs.

In my opinion i think having the classic custom dual crash , the 15 inch dry hi hat , the byzance extta thin hammered crushed ride and thr fx cymbals of your choice is the most versatile choice so you can play most genres

15" foundry reserve hihat, 18" jazz extra thin, 22" dual crash ride or 22" extra dry medium ride, 19" dual crash. It's the setup that i'm in love with. Should i include 10" vintage trash splash? 😁

( real name Jimmy Berlo) Pure Alloy's & Custom's are so precise & Powerful, / John Bonham would be using them! and the 3 different series of Classic Customs (and Dual version) are the best semi-pro Cymbals there are, back in the day there was no equivalent alternative.
