I got the Deus 2 after using the AT Pro with a Tornado and Sharpshooter coils for 5 years. I’ve found a lot of good stuff with it. Deus is exactly what I needed to continue learning and getting better as a relic Hunter. Could have used a Deus a few years ago but I’m glad I waited until 2 came out. I love it.

Great review, Merrill. I own the Deus 2. I am deeply satisfied with it. My proof of it's performance is in all the silver I am pulling out of fields that have been hit hard with a Nox 800 and a Deus 1 for the last 18 months. These fields have been gridded multiple times and in different directions and are full of iron nails. The Deus 2 is still pulling coins out at depth. The Nox is a very, very good machine but unfortunately, my bum shoulder was the reason I went with the XP. Pricey? Yes, but shoulder surgery would be pricier if I continued to aggravate it with a heavy machine like the Nox. Everyone has their own checklist when it comes to purchasing merchandise. The Deus 2 price point is tough to swallow, but it checked almost all the boxes for me. And it will continue to get better as XP fine tunes things.

Great vid dude! I love the fact that you used real world conditions for this test. Too often people set these detectors up to 'beep' on a target but there is no way you could hunt with them and the settings they have dialed up. Oh i miss my White's! trying to get a handle on the Vanquish 540. Definetely deep but they took the VDI section and halved it from what White's was displaying. I will get their. It only takes 1 gold ring to boost confidence. Take care Bro!

Only one comment I have really. Great job by the way. I do notice the machines with slower recovery(older in most cases) are not doing as good in this test. Hitting but not great. One mistake people often make is thinking lower reactivity is better for depth, and it is but ONLY in clean ground. Meaning no other targets within the coil width. This is pretty dirty ground so a lower recovery speed may not always be better. Targets may bleed into each other during your swing, as in before one target sounds off you're hitting the next which can corrupt the tones. I know the Legend may have been set too low for those conditions, the NOX I'm not sure about. The vanquish doesn't have recovery but it does have adjustable iron bias which may have helped it out. The D1 was sketchy with iron buzz but I don't know a lot about them and the D2 sounded bad up close and amazing far away which was weird. The older minelabs were mostly disappointing but I don't know much about those either. Now the problem with everything I said above is......while I'm sure some machines can be tuned in to hit a KNOWN target.......how will they fair if you just turn them on in a strange location with unknown targets in the ground? That's why I prefer most machines be tested in the stock modes first and then adjusted afterward. That way newbies know what they're getting and experienced hobbyists know what they're getting. Either way this was a great test.

You raised the real question about value for money relating to detectors. I would raise another issue and that is build quality, especially relating to the nox. When you consider the cost of these units, you would expect the coil attachment point, the arm cuff and shift lock mechanism to be solid and robust. I see so many detectorists having to buy after market parts to reinforce minelad's design or replacing parts from other brands, simply because the nox appears to have some build design faults. This is not a rant against minelab as I have all minelab products, but the newer stuff appears to have dropped in but quality.......Your thoughts?
@KenLord

I don't have a nox, but it sure seems common among the nox youtubers for the battery / charging system to go wonky. As a Garrett user, it's all about the cracked coils. gotta be so careful around rocks. And a cracked coil can potentially fry the electronics... But they do have great customer service, they fixed my AT Max when I went through this, replacing the coil and board for free, despite it being a couple months past warranty.

Very interesting test. As a metal detecting hobby goes for me, this test confirms what an outstanding value the Simplex represents. I'm impressed by what I've been seeing with the new Legend but, does it merit an extra $400? For my purposes it's a no. Then, considering that the Deus and Equinox are just out of the question. Again, for me this is just a hobby, I'm not looking to make money or create a new profession. This is kind of like comparing a $10 hammer to a $100 hammer.

For me, I am a silver hunter mad man. I have a goal, find $200.00 face value in silver coins and I will pay anything for the best chance of finding silver coins. That said, I bought the Deus II and am finding silver coins (wheaties too) in places I have hunted before. The Deus II is great. I am 76 years old, so I don't have much metal detecting time left and I need to have the detector that will give me the best chance to reach my goal. I just hunt nickels, copper pennies, dimes, and quarters. Today I got three silver coins in parkways I've hunted before with my old detectors. Yesterday I got five silvers, four dimes and one quarter and eight wheat pennies, all in a park I've hunted before.

The Deus 2 likes to be swung a little faster than one might expect. One thing I would also recommend is run in 5 tones keep your discrimination no higher than 6. I do 5.5 and it's an animal in iron. You can always adjust your lower tone break to 20 or 30 and set the frequency down to 100. It really makes a difference in iron infested areas. Another option for iron infested areas is to use relic program and set the IAR to 5. This will give a clear iron tone for the iron and a good pitch tone for the rest. Note this does not work well in non-ferrous trashy areas. Best for areas like your garden where it's mostly iron junk

It might have. But this is about relativity. How good was the response of the Garrett AT-Pro compared with the field. I am rooting for Garrett. Competition is a good thing. But the truth is that right now you are at a disadvantage with an AT-pro. It’s true that familiarity and experience with the machine is one of the most important factors but I would argue that ceiling is also. That machines ceiling is clearly lower than others tested here.

Just study every metal detecting forum you can find. Locate old swimming holes and get in the water with it. If you find the right one you`ll load up on gold and silver. See Gigmaster`s latest few videos and his older ones with the 800. Go to tot lots on days when it`s drizzling and look for coins. Dig any possible gold jewelry signals though. Try to get permission to hunt old yards. Place an AD once you`re comfortable with it offering to help locate lost rings.

Nearly purchased a Garrett At pro a few weeks ago and it's videos like this that make me glad i did not. Many people of course will disagree, but, way too many of these depth tests in real world conditions have clearly illustrated that the AT pro generally sucks at good repeatable target detection at depths that other machines costing much much less will pick up with ease. The simplex seems to be very hard to beat(especially considering it's price) Going to pull the trigger on buying a new simplex and from what i've seen time and again about them - likely won't be disappointed. Great vid, looking forward to seeing many more tests, especially on the machines that don't cost as much as a good used car(as way too many detectors do these days!) Just cannot justify spending 1000+ dollars on a metal detector!

Cool to see the progression there, where generally newer tech did better than related older tech. And older more expensive tech as expected did better than older cheaper tech. And in general as would be expected, more expensive / more sophisticated tech did better than cheaper tech. Apex ... ya, sad but true, it isn't for trashy parks, although I would have turned down the iron volume as you did on the next detector. But regardless, we know it does great on the beach. If I was in the market for a new detector, that Deus 2 is sure looking good, but I wish it didn't cost so much. ... any newbies using it might find themselves living out that infamous meme of the guy digging for 10 feet before realizing he was detecting his shoes.

All in all the Legend is pretty great....and really quirky....when someone takes the time to get used to the quirks they will have a great detector in their hands at 635. The Deus 2 is looking better than anything right now. but i agree that 1600 dollars is a little absurd....and you know I love my Equinox!

Merrill, my thoughts on detector ratings. Detectors should be separated by class. Example: an Bounty hunter or ACE 200 are not in the same class as an AT Pro/Anfibio, or even a Deus or CTX 3030. Within the different classes there should be a rating (within class) that basically rates the best bang for the buck. This gives a consumer an idea of what rates best in their targeted price point. I have a NOX 800, because I can't afford a Deus 2. My goal was to purchase the best detector under $1000. I believe I did well, but it took a year to pull the trigger on a purchase. Mainly because it took that long to research. An honest rating system would have made the decision easier. I don't remember how many youtube videos I watched, where (if I didn't know any better) there are dozens of "best metal detectors".

You are absolutely correct. But what makes my site (iratemetaldetectors.com) different is that I have an intimate knowledge of all of these machines. I cant afford to cover every detector in the whole industry but I give feedback on what I know really well. I question the accuracy of the ratings on other sites because they are either guesses with information that doesnt line up or a stars rating system which is usually a group think. I prefer the second method of the 2, but ive also seen those systems get manipulated. You did really well with the Nox.

Great video. I would also like to see the AT MAX which is the deepest of the AT SERIES in its all metal mode. The max has an all metal mode thats very deep. The ATpro does not. The Max in all metal can go 4 to 6 inches deeper than the pro. I have air tested nickels at about 17 to 18 inches. If you can include that detector in some other video i haven't seen yet you will pick up alot of garrett detectorist out there on your videos.

I’ve heard that metal detecting works well with the force from Star Wars and dowsing rods. A good machine will enhance your understanding of what is in the ground, through audio and visual inference.

I have kind of a dumb question. I am not a 100% novice because many years ago I got a used Radio Shack and played with it enough to know while it is not a good detector it will work in limited ways. But now I am retired and going to travel in a converted bus and want to get a GOOD detector. Yes, I will stay with it as a hobby as long as I am able. So A more expensive machine could be acceptable. What would you advise? MY qualifications are 1) as waterproof as possible, I was born and raised in Fla soI will be beaching it or maybe into the water 10 to 15 ft, 2) all metal capable, On beaches would be looking for gold and silver but in ghost towns in the desert would be looking for all metals. So, with maybe as much as $2000 could be budgeted but cheaper would be good, LOL I know you dont push one detector over others because it puts money in your pocket. Interested in YOUR OPINION.

I became XP’s ambassador for a reason. I have owned 23 detectors. Do you think I would want to compromise my Detecting and take something substandard? To me the best metal detector on the market is the XP Deus 2. I put it as the highest capability rating on my website long before becoming ambassador. Dad is my honest advice.

Merrill, I have to weigh in. I had "The Huter GT" program my Deus II to my liking. My idea of a great coin shooting program is, Do Not Discriminate, just adjust the volume so you don't hear anything (lower the volume) except nickels, copper pennies, dimes, quarters etc. Now I cannot believe how many silver coins I am digging in places I have hunted before with my NOX 800. I absolutely love my Deus II. That being said, I lost the coil cover in heavy brush, and now I cannot charge my coil. I am struggling to order a new one. When I try at one site, it won't let me order two? It's now Sunday and I still don't have one ordered much less two. The good thing, I have my NOX 800 back-up.

Hi Merrill. As a Simplex user my best, most productive searches - in fields and pastures - seem to be with Park1 and iron off as there's not a great density of targets/pollution where I go. It's slower recovery than Park2 which I'd use in trashy places or gardens to coin shoot. On the Park1 test you did, going on the VDI with iron on, I would not dig it: the low numbers would make me think it's iron. When you took off the iron the variable VDI would make me think it's foil left by farmers or hunters. However if I had a good-lock on the signal and not much going on I might dig but it would be 50-50 (depending on the patch beforehand). I think the Simplex is very capable having got hundreds of coins in 2 years, but now, although we don't have Mercury Dimes in France, I do wonder how many good targets I walked away from. P.S. Btw, I believe that it's only on all-metal (or beach?) mode that you need to ground balance and there's no Field 3.

Honestly, I buy and test metal detectors that I see being used by others on KZfaq and live in parks and beaches. I own one bounty hunter detector. They are very entry level. Other companies have moved in to simultaneous multi frequency (Minelab, Nokta, Garrett, XP). Even Fisher has made an advanced pulse device. Bounty Hunters would get obliterated. Please forgive my bluntness. I do not mean it to be rude. Their business model seems to be entry level detectors with entry level prices. This is all self bought so I have to draw the line somewhere.

Here the apex will help to depth the coil thunder or the coil detech 33cm, the same is the case at at max or at gold,Do not buy at pro, whether the search power (depth) decreases at the same time as the energy decreases. If you want an analog detector of super depth and coin response speed,so unrivaled is the golden mask 4 only 18khz with a new 33cm coil you can also buy a second hand detectorand buy a new reel original golden mask 33cm or nel thunder (deep forest, mountains, already explored places) ....Otherwise, if you clean small things (coins ...) with a micro-grinder or tumblerand you are bothered by the loss of patina so buy a liquid iron cutter mixed with tannin( We sell it as a ready-made mixed product, I don't know how in the USA).If you use this product you need a coin free of patina, the coin will get a beautiful chocolate color.Another popular patina that is made in our country is that you need to buy a product (liquid or powder) in our pharmacy under the name Healing sulfur bath or even sulfur soap, after application on the coin it is necessary to wipe to the desired shade, if you are not satisfied with the shade can be repeated after But with us, they are usually bought in horticulture and in large hobby markets product for fertilization called sulka (also contains sulfur) it's the same but it's liquid and fastthis patina in turn gives the coin a metallic to black color, these two patinas can be used for silver coins. The last fourth patina is very simple, it is suitable for both copper and copper coins,You buy cucumbers in a glass, eat cucumbers and throw coins into the water after the cucumbers, over time these coins get green-brown, sometimes pull out the coins and look if you want a light or dark patina because over time the coin will change as if you dug it up again (found in the ground).. If you use olive oil when cleaning coins and other things, do not use it anymore, it is better to distill water, which takes oil from the dirt coin, on the contrary, it attracts them.Olive oil is also greasy and dirt coins ... Olive oil only to eat ...
