In the world of OBDII there really isn't anything new, after all the protocol was defined BEFORE 1996 (to be implemented in 1996 - 26 years ago!!) and the CAN Bus was added in 2008... The few new commands for the ELM327 2.2 (or 2.3) typically are not implemented in any app, as their benefit is very small. (flow control and setting different timeouts) The main use of any ELM327 based OBD scanner is to read and clear codes, plus a small percent of folks doing live data logging. Any version of ELM327 will do that just. fine. I have been using BlueDriver and FixD for a while now, and will start to put together a review of those. :) Thanks for your comment!

@@OBD4Everyone is it worth the extra compared with the CS for a first time user such as myself. Just about the receive a 335d f31 and will be wanting to keep a close eye on this BM as my last one died due to dpf/Egr and oil issues.

I think it would be best to get a dedicated OBD scanner/app for a BMW. This should allow you to read all the modules on the car and provide more data for troubleshooting.

Since I am in North America, I really don't know from first hand testing. BUT I think all "EOBD" (European On Board Diagnostic) should work starting in 2001 for gasoline engines and 2003 for diesel.

Hey Gary Thornton, Maybe... the trick is to find what the extended PID is. With the older vehicles (pre 2008) the diagnostic system is more closed and details are hard to find and less people are trying to reverse engineer the PIDs. I wish you luck!

If you budget is around $100, the OBDLInk MX+ is excellent and comes with a free, full featured app: OBDLink (which is the same as OBD Fusion) -OR- for around $30 the Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth is also very good, but you will need to buy a good app, like OBDFusion. If you are asking about a wired, hand held scanner, I don't know. I don't have any hands on experience with them, but from what I have seen in helping others, they seem to be VERY limited as they often have small screens and can't display much at once. UNLESS you want to spend $500 or more for a dedicated touch screen tablet.

Hey Bud Gunter, To be honest, I have no idea, so I looked into it. It looks like the "OBD I to OBD II" cables simply re-map the input to output. With OBD I specifications being non-standardized and up to the manufacturer I can't see this working very good. OBD II only uses a few different protocols: * J1850 PWM • J1850 VPW • ISO9141-2 / ISO14230-4 • ISO15765 CAN I don't know how well the older OBD I protocols would be compatible with the OBD II. My suggestion would be to find a forum or facebook group and get their feedback. -OR- try it yourself and let me know. :)

Yes.... I am way behind on episodes and will see if I can free up some time to get a few out. I did recently pick up an OBD scanner with bi-directional control but haven't tested it yet. As for sending commands via a terminal, every ELM327 based scanner will accept any command /PID you send to it. The difficult part is knowing which diagnostic mode to be in, what PID to send and how to understand the reply.

Those videos are still on the production schedule, but they are delayed. This channel is 99% self funded and those funds were needed to be moved due to the current events. Pre-production should restart in about 4-5 weeks :)

Hey Alif Mali, Thanks for your kind words! Generally, specialized programs are required to read or change the odometer. Depending on the manufacturer the odometer is stored in multiple modules: engine control module, body control module, power train control module, etc. The program would need to change all of the locations or errors / trouble codes would appear. I have used BlueDriver a little and didn't see any option to change the odometer. Maybe it depends on the vehicle make.

Hey Alif Mali, I am not aware of anything that can read the mileage in the different modules. If the mileage has been rolled back, I'm sure it would be changed in all the modules, so I am not sure if that is all that helpful. I would look at the wear on the brake & gas pedal, steering wheel, seats, seat belts, etc to get a rough idea of actual mileage and how hard the vehicle was driven. It is always a little risky buying a used car, so make sure to check it out inside, outside and under. Also, if you run OBD Fusion's diagnostic report (assuming your vehicle is OBD II complaint) , you can see how much mileage the vehicle has done since the check engine light was cleared -AND- in the Mode $09 section, you can see how many times the vehicle has been started. (Ignition Cycle Counter) Hopefully this is helpful to you.

I think the single most important factor in the choice is checking the compatibility of one's vehicle with the tool to know whether Enhanced Codes are supported for the specific model, make, year, location. MX+ claims support for OEM-specific MS-CAN networks and says BlueDriver can access only HS-CAN, but BlueDriver fires back with saying that MX+ won't get HS2- Can and HS4- Can, and they will not get newer Fords HSX-CAN and on the older Fords they will not get UBP. As someone not familiar with automotive networks, I don't know what this means or how to assess its practical significance to a given user. It probably goes back to checking for specific vehicle support and ideally getting a list of readings possible. Lastly, all these pros and cons are "on paper" and it would be great to hear knowledgeable reviews with hands-on practical use.

For that episode I did test three different USB based OBD scanners. Unfortunately, since they didn't all connect/work with the testing programs, I dropped them from the video. The OBDLink SX did work with everything and was very fast! Search for that om my channel to see how well it did.

Quick side story: A while ago, I looked into why I couldn't connect to it. As it turned out, the factory didn't program the Bluetooth module. Anyways, if you can connect to it, just about any OBD app will give you the code. Your challenge is to understand what that code means and how to troubleshoot it. The code description doesn't always mean that is the problem.

As far as I know, those BMW K+CAN / K+DCAN cables don't use ELM327 commands and won't work with this app. Just pick up a cheap ELM327 device and you will be good to go :)

Hey Souhail Marghabi, Yes, but that was on a 2011 Infiniti G37, on the 500 kbs CAN bus protocol. You might want to use the free app from your OBDLink MX+ called OBDLink. Then connect and touch Settings > About > Information and the PID speed will be displayed. Please keep in mind different vehicles will give you different speed results, depending on how quickly the ECM/PCM responds. PLUS newer vehicles have an OBD gateway to protect the car's network and greatly reduce the PID speed. Good luck on your project!

OBD4Everyone Thank you very much gor the info, I just checked with a OBD2-Simulator(Diamex) anf it seems to show a frequency of 15 pids/second. Not sure if that is fast or not.

Hey Brandyn Goodwin, I don't have any experience customizing Dodge (or Fiat Chrysler Autos) vehicles, but if an Android app can do it, all you need to do is find an iOS app that does the same, assuming one exists. Your other option is buy a used Android phone or tablet for cheap and use that.

That sounds about right to me. The older (aka non CAN bus) protocols are a little slower.

I love comments like these... you have done your homework! As I see it, once a vehicle has ADAS (advanced driver assistant systems) the OBD port has a gateway, to protect the network from easy access to it, and the OBD data PID rate is much slower. One option, is to connect to the CAN bus after the OBD gateway, but that requires a wiring diagram, which may not be easy to find. As for power solutions, some vehicles do have ignition power at the OBD connector. With a custom cable, this would allow the OBD device only to be power when the engine is on. Unfortunately, not all manufactures support this :(

​@@OBD4Everyone Thanks Frank. It looks like the speed limitation is through the OBD request rate, as J2534 gives much higher data rates from the same CAN pins in the same DCL3 port. On power, the problem is not the car battery (the OBDLink SX draws only 0.16 mA there when asleep) but the Android host device battery (from which the OBDLink SX continues to draw ~80 mA). One also needs to power the host device while running the SX (usually through the same micro-USB / OTG port). It gets a little easier with wireless charging or USB-C, but still a challenge if the SX remains connected between drives. A solution (eg a custom-made pass-through power adapter to exploit Samsung muic.h) is easier for some Android devices than others.

Most Asian vehicles built before 2008 use the ISO-9141 protocol for OBD communications. It is not very fast at 12,500 bits per second, so you may only get 2-4 PID updates per second. A newer OBD scanner won't speed things up, the low speed of the protocol is the bottleneck. Some OBD apps use "smoothing" to simulate a more responsive gauge, which can make you think that app works faster. (and it does look nicer!) With your 2002 Toyota, your hands are tied and there is nothing you can do increase the PID speed. (I assume you have "fast poll" turned on, and dwell is set to 0)

For some reason, the NDSIII app only works on the older Bluetooth 2.0 (not Bluetooth Low Energy) , which only works with Android devices. I think you need to buy a $10 ELM327 that says it only works on Android and you should be good to go.

It is the software/app that knows how to request the ABS (or any other module) data. Even the cheap ELM327 based OBD devices have the required hardware to read from all modules.

Sorry, but I don't. For me, I prefer an OBD device that supports an app. This way you should be able to log live data to a file, which can be very helpful to understanding a problem vs only looking at the current data value. Unfortunately, I don't have any access to an electric car, so I don't know anything about that.

As I understand it, vehicles made for the Chinese marketplace didn't need to be OBD compliant until 2009. If that is accurate, no OBD device will be able to connect to you engine computer / ECU.

Hey swineone, Yes I have one and tested it. On my iPhone 6S, OBDFusion showed about 25 PIDs/second on a 2011 Infiniti G37, using the 500 Kb/s CAN bus. If you are getting 7 PIDs/second, I suspect your car's network is using one of the older and slower protocols. To check, once you are connected, touch settings > about > information to see what protocol (and speed) your vehicle uses.

@@OBD4Everyone I just checked and it's using "ISO 15765-4 CAN (11 bit ID, 500 Kbaud)", so it's a CAN bus. I wouldn't expect otherwise as it's a MY 2020 car (Volkswagen up!). I guess some ECUs are just higher performance than others, and can reply faster to requests.

Hey swineone, Keep in mind, the scan tool has the lowest priority on the CAN bus. This is by design so the more critical operations are not interrupted. It is my understanding that some German cars use a "gateway" where the OBD data is controlled and protects the main CAN bus. Newer cars are doing a much better job of protecting the car's network from hacking and remote control. I think this "gateway" is one way this is being done.

Simple answer: I didn't have one then... Now I do :) It will be in a future review.

I don't know. BMW diagnostic systems typically need special apps/hardware to read/reset all the modules. Your best bet is to ask on Reddit or a X1 forum to see what works best for you.

When you say "Apple" I assume you mean iOS and not Mac...for iOS, OBDLink MX+ wil do that on most vehicles. Check their website to see what is available for your vehicle.

Based on my experience, the VeePeak is a better product than the generic ELM327. Did you test for any speed difference?

I have no way of testing on Japanese market vehicles. Under the hood, there is an engine label that list the emission devices and if it is OBD compliant. It is my understanding that Japanese made vehicles destine for the US/Canada market cars are OBD compliant, BUT Japanese market cars are not OBD compliant.

@@OBD4Everyone Thank you for your quick reply. I did some more searching and it seems that obdlink support also Japanese cars. In their web page at the bottom of the specs they state JOBD support. I also signed up in their forum and I found successful connections using some initialization commands. I also found on the internet that the cheap ones(like the ones you threw on the bin) do not use the original ELM327 chip but a Chinese copy. Do you know if obdlink is ELM327 or is it something different?

The update speed is mostly determined by the protocol the car or modules uses. A pre-2008 Honda/Nissan/Toyota uses the slower ISO-9141 protocol that is only 12,500 bits per second. Most cars made from 2008+ use CAN bus (500,000) bits per second so the update rate *CAN* be much faster. (assuming there isn't a "gateway" to controls the data flow on and off the car's diagnostic network) In my opinion, with a quality product like the OBDLink, the speed you get is the fastest you can get from the car.

Hey Renals Homlmes, The testing is done and the episode is in the process of being put together. One of the biggest differences, is that the BlueDriver only works with its own app. OBDLink MX+ works with their app and any other OBD app.

Good question! If you are the type of person who likes to do your own diagnostics and has access to the factory shop manual, I think the MX+ is still a good deal. If you don't have the skills/space/time to do any troubleshooting then I think BlueDriver is a good option. The other option is a VeePeak OBD scanner and a good OBD app like OBD Fusion. Total cost should be under $50 depending on what country you live in.

It depends on the OBD scanner. You want to make sure it has a "low power sleep mode". If it doesn't, then after a week or two you might have a dead battery. Off the top of my head, the OBDLink MX+ has a sleep mode and only uses 0.002 amps. www.obdlink.com/products/obdlink-mxp/ Cheaper scanners may also have a power saver mode, I just can't think of any right now.

Not that I know of... The MX+ is read only. To do what you want, I suspect the cluster or other module will need to be re-programmed so it knows about the larger tank. I have no idea who can do this, but I wish you luck!

That is difficult to answer... It depends on the speed of the OBD scanner AND how quickly the engine computer responds to OBD requests... Most cars made in the last 5+ years have an OBD gateway which greatly slows down the speed of an external OBD scanner.

Hey John Noah, That's difficult for me to answer. I don't know how much you want to spend, or how you want to use them. Do you want to clear codes (speed not an issue) or data logging (faster is better) The OBD scanner I use the most is the OBDLink MX, it is fast, well built, comes with OBDLink (almost same as OBD Fusion) and has a 3 year warranty. If I didn't have the OBDLink scanner, I would use the BLE / BLE+ from Veepeak. Or you can try your luck on the VERY cheap ELM327 clones. Now as for the OBD apps, Torque Pro is OK, but I find OBDFusion has a much more logical layout and that fantastic diagnostic report. Good luck with what ever you decide!

Hey noodlefoo, At Veepeak.com there is a FAQ and one of the questions is: Can I leave the device plugged in all the time? Answer: You can leave the Bluetooth models plugged in if you are driving the vehicle frequently. Depending on the battery condition, if you leave your car sitting for days to weeks, we recommend that you remove the OBD2 device. We do not suggest that you leave the WiFi model plugged in if it’s not in use. WiFi consumes significantly more power than Bluetooth. For me, I only have it plugged in when I am using it to scan codes or log data. Thanks for you comment!

Hey FuriousHondaBoy, I have been using the BlueDriver for a few months and hope to get the review episode out soon. It is a bit of a different product... There are a lot of OBD scanners on the market and I don't have the resources (financial or time) to buy them all and review them... In the example of BAFX, their products are a little outdated as they don't offer a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) scanner. They only offer Android only Bluetooth (v2) or Wifi. I like to do reviews on devices that work on both Android and iOS without loosing a connection to the internet (any wifi scanner prevents you from connecting to the internet, bluetooth LE does not) As for your question on PID support, that is determined by the app... not the hardware or OBD scanner. The "ELM327 Identifirer" is an app that tell you which version of ELM327 the scanner supports. That has nothing to do with how many PIDs it supports. Again, that is determined by the app. The app I recommend is OBD Fusion. It is available on Android and iOS, it is full featured and runs very well. As for an OBD scanner, the $30 Vgate iCar Pro BLE is quick and inexpensive. If you want a faster OBD scanner, the $100 OBDlink MX+ is a good choice.

Thanks for subbing! I don't have any hands on experience with the OBDLink LX. In looking at the spec sheet, it looks to be a good OBD scanner,. BUT it only works on Android devices and doesn't support the second network (MS CAN) on Ford vehicles. If you have an Android phone, the LX looks to be a good deal and comes with the full featured OBDLink app (which is the same as the paid OBDFusion) and it should cover your needs for a long time.

I don't have a Ford to test on right now, but I do think it would work. You might want to check at the ForScan forums: forscan.org/forum/

Hey Abdullah salman, Your car might not be OBD-2 compliment. Under the hood or somewhere around the engine, there should be an engine information label and it should state "OBD 2 Certified" or something like that. Hey Louie Testa, I guess it is possible for a bad/cheap ELM327 to damage an ECU, but I have never seen or heard about this happening. The ECU are designed to handle voltage spikes and shorts, so I wouldn't worry about it. For peace of mind, you might want to consider a better known brand like OBDLInk, Vpeek, Foseal, Vgate, etc. As for your torque problems, you might want to try their support forum: torque-bhp.com/forums/?wpforumaction=viewforum&f=1.0 Good luck!

OBD4Everyone Thank You for taking the time to answer my questions. I agree with you, better safe then sorry so I ordered a new OBDLINK MX+ I will know more when it gets here and I can retest everything. The last time that I used the ELM 327 all 14 of my voltage blocks reported relativity consistent numbers and a few other gauges were working also before I tossed it in the trash. I would think if their was something wrong with my ECU unit I wouldn’t have got any response at all, so I’m pretty sure it’s ok. I will know more when I check it on the new OBDLINK MX+. If you are asking about data logging, OBDFusion, OBDLink, Torque Pro and most OBD apps can save the OBD data to a local file in a CSV format that any spreadsheet program can open and view.

Not really. The app converts the raw data of the OBD requests to something readable. There are devices that will log OBD data (speed, RPM, throttle position, etc) to an SD card, maybe that would meet your requirement?

Hey Paul Mohney, You don't need 2-way communication (as in read and write) to understand why a vehicle may not pass smog. For example, the OBD Fusion app (iOS and Android), has a very nice diagnostic report and it shows all codes, with a description and shows the status of the monitors. Once you have the codes, you can do an online search to learn more about common fixes. Hey Dimitris Christopoulos, Since your VW is made before 2001, there is a good chance it is not OBD compliant all OBD scanners won't work. Under the hood, look for the emissions label, and see if it says something like "OBD certified" . If you see that, any OBD scanner should work for the basic OBD items.

Hey Gehad Nada, That's a tough question to answer. All 1996 cars were required to be OBD 1 certified. However, I don't think the Land Cruiser is categorized as a car. Look at the under side of the hood. There will be a sticker that shows the emission systems install on the car and if it is OBD certified, it will say something like "OBD Certified" With the pre-2008 vehicles, the PID speed will be VERY slow, maybe 5-8 per second. This is due to the speed of the protocol that was used. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. I had a look at the fuse box, I did not find the OBD2 connection. I know that OBD2 was in force post 1996 in the US. My truck was manufactured for Gulf Countries (GCC standard) I have a diagnosis plug at the passenger side under the hood, I guess thats an OBD1 port. My question is if I get an OBD1 to OBD2 converter, and an OBD2 scanner like OBDlink MX or so, will it pull any data out?

Hey Gehad Nada, I don't think a OBD converter will work. OBD II has strict definitions on the protocols that must be used. However, OBD 1 can use any protocol they want , including their own manufacture specific protocols. Sorry I can't be more help. I don't have any information on Gulf market vehicles.

Typically no... the buffer size of the ELM327 is too small and can't process the messages quick enough.

Hey anthony sada, When you say "bi-directional" I assume that you mean you would like to turn on/off components of an engine or body. In that case, the factory scan tool (~$3,000+) or a high end Autel or Snap-On. Typical price starts at $1,000 and up. I have not tested any "bi-directional" scanners, so I can't recommend one. However, if you are just starting DIY work, I don't think you need a bi-directional scanner. I know I haven't needed one. If you agree, the OBDLink MX+ is a good choice.

Hey anthony sada, The BlueDriver is not bi-directional. If you are new to working on your own car the BlueDriver is an OK choice, as it is very easy to use, but it is a little slow. It can data log, but it is a little slow at 10 PIDs/second. Also when scanning all modules it can take more then 5 minutes! It can scan most modules for codes and clear them, however it only gives access to generic OBD data, so you can't get any live data from other modules like the transmission control module, ABS module, etc. For less money the OBDLink MX+ is about 4x faster, and can provide live data from most modules on the car's network. In the next month, I should have a full review out.

@@OBD4Everyone Yes I am looking for a bi-directional that has the most features possible, as inexpensive as possible, with possibly free lifetime updates or at least inexpensive ones. I hear Autel makes good ones or a Foxwell scanner. With someone of your knowledge and expertise your help in this matter would be invaluable & I would certainly look at any that you would suggest. Not yet... but soon! The app was recently updated and I need to go back and re-verify my findings.

I should explain the reason why speed is important. When looking (graphing or datalogging) an oxygen sensor, air flow sensor or anything else that changes rapidly, if you only get a few updates per second, you won't see a lot of the data. Like you, I learned that the cheap OBD scanners are not very good. I think a Veepeak or even iCar Pro would well for you and I think they are $20 - $30. As for "a better OBD scanner", the enhanced functionality is due to the software, not the hardware (OBD scanner) If you want something very close to "dealer" level scan tool, look into OBDFusion with the $14 enhanced diagnostic add-on. In the case of my car, it provided an additional 223 data item (PIDs)

After the video was shot, I took it apart. It was not assembled correctly and was missing a few solder joints.
