We not long ago received ours over here in Australia and took it for its first trip on the weekend. Rained all weekend but stood up to the test great and such a large covered area. So quick and easy to setup/pack up. We will be living out of it for 4 weeks while doing the Northern Territory.

Great presentation. Love your summary of other trailers you have looked at, most of which I am familiar with. I live in the Pacific Northwest, in your humble opinion, how will it do in the rain? And what is the total height of the trailer fully closed up?
@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 3 жыл бұрын
I think it would do really well in the rain. There are little rain flies above the bed canopies and all of the zippers have extra fabric over them. You can tell from the video that you cannot see the zippers from the outside of the trailer because they are covered by that layer of fabric which provides dust and moisture protection at the zippers. That’s the thing I have been most impressed with, actually, is the attention to detail. This company has been making tents and campers for two decades and they have worked out all of the little problems and figured out smart solutions to prevent things like dust and water leakage over the years.
@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 3 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention the total height. That was an issue! I thought the trailer would fit in my garage because the height listed on the website is 82.7 inches which would (barely) fit through the door of my garage. However, that height doesn't count the solar panel and roof rack which adds approximately another 3.5 inches to the overall height. I ended up storing the trailer at an inexpensive outdoor storage facility. The trailer came with a nice heavy-duty storage cover that is easy to use so I am still protected from the elements during storage.

Is it possible for you to do a full set up video when you get a chance? The vendor version is a time lapse from 2 years ago and it "feels" like it's at least a 30-minute set up process just to get everything deployed. Has that been your experience as well?

Absolutely! I have been meaning to do that and I also want to show off a new camo paint job that I applied to the rig. I’ve taken it on several recent trips, but I’ve been more involved with enjoying time with my partner and my friends than making videos :) I might have some time next weekend to set up a camera. Cheers!

I have checked out the Conqueror trailers and they are really awesome as well! They do cost a bit more but I think the quality of construction is very similar. The South African trailers are just really well thought out and extremely well-built. I don’t think you could go wrong with either the Bushwakka or Conqueror. For me the Bushwakka was a little bit better value for money but it might not be able to accommodate a air conditioner

Great video how long is full set up and pack down also if u only set up one awning is there a way to cover the back or do u need to have both awnings deployed cheers
@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 3 жыл бұрын
I have timed it and I can do the basic two-bed, no-awning set up in about 6 minutes. Set up with the awnings is another 4-5 minutes. Adding the center panel to cover the gap between the awnings is another 4-5 minutes. I haven't timed the annex room set-up but I would estimate that adds 10 minutes. I set it up once just to check it out and it's pretty awesome, but I don't think I would use that unless I was planning on at least a 3-4 day stay. To get full coverage of the back, like in a rain situation, you need both awnings deployed. However, the kitchen is covered when only the driver side awning is deployed and there is a small rain awning that covers the entrance to the camper. That is how we had it set-up this last weekend in a campsite near the beach. The campsite was too narrow for both awnings (a tree was in the way) but we had nice shade over the kitchen with just the one awning. Hope this helps! Cheers!

Wow great video. I couldnt help but notice you mention the words small details over and over again and i have to ask......what about the big details that they completely missed? Why are the fridge and stove so far from the kitchen part? The last i checked a fridge and stove were part of a kitchen not an after thought how these guys have it.
@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never once had a concern about where the fridge is..It’s on the same side as the kitchen and it’s only a few steps away. I have an outdoor kitchen at my house that is 30 feet from my refrigerator and carrying a few items out to the kitchen has never bothered me. I specifically picked a camper that is mostly an outdoor experience and I’m not really bothered by walking a little bit outside. If you’re concerned about taking a few steps outdoors under a shade to get some items from the fridge then perhaps this rig is not for you. From my research, every camper I looked at had a few things that weren’t exactly perfect. For example, I am more than willing to sacrifice a little on a less than perfect fridge location to have a refrigerator that is much larger than you get in most galley kitchens. Another example: with a lot of kitchens I saw, when you pull the fridge out on its drawer it gets in the way of your counter space for cooking so you would constantly be pulling the fridge in and out. And in other campers, you can’t open the drawers or cabinets when you have things on the counter. The Bhoma was the choice that fit my needs best but you are free to choose to something different. Cheers!

I saw an Australian video on the Bhoma and it claimed a ~ 110 liter fresh water tank. Does yours have the equivalent, 29 gallons?
@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 2 жыл бұрын
Yep! I said "30 gallons" in the video but it's really 29 gallons. However, there is also space for two 20L Jerry cans which I fill with fresh water for longer outings. I use those to refill the main tank, so the total volume I can carry is 150L of fresh water, which is how I arrived at a total of 40 gallons (technically 39.6 but I rounded up)

@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! There is very little wood. Mainly the doors of the cabinets. The carpet-like fabric allows velcro to stick to it so it's pretty cool to be able to add modular storage attached by velcro. There is a spare tire under the vehicle and 150 W solar panel on the roof and plugs/ cables included to add additional portable solar panels. There is a roof rack on top that could accommodate kayaks, bikes, etc. There is also a 2" receiver at the back for a bike rack. Plus I am towing with a vehicle so the trailer frees up space for toys in my Jeep. Cheers!

...the hitch is not telescopic ....that's the inertia brake....so when your truck brakes the trailer pushes that telescoping hitch closed and puts the brakes on , on the trailer. Sure the trailer is fine but for off-road there are some seriously stronger hitches I believe. Look at Patriot Campers etc. The Aussies are obsessed with building the best gear out there! But the South Africans know a tonne about off-roading so I am sure it's up to the job.
@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback! I am aware that it's the inertia brake, but in actual practice the flexibility and telescoping action of the hitch seem to provide a bit of benefit when going through dips. The hitch dips down, telescoping and braking the trailer as it descends. I may decide to swap out the hitch at some point but so far it's been plenty capable for my needs. Cheers!
@simonspain6080
@simonspain6080 2 жыл бұрын
@@kurtspurgin4942 The ball is the pivot point so that is the vital area really. The telescoping acting should simply provide braking of the caravan or camper-trailer and not anything else really as it is a weak point really and not meant to change towing lengths or angles. But a shorter length in compression in a dip for example and longer when exiting could be a benefit but small as they move maybe 4-6 inches most I would think....my Eriba Puck has this and its compression and full extension aren't too different.

I've been in contact with Jeffery at BUSA who has been extremely responsive over email. Information gleaned so far for others who might be interested: Current lead times on orders is roughly 120 days. The MSRP I was given for the base model is $42,500 and $44,950 for a fully spec'd out system. I do wonder, however, how well the system works in high humidity areas such as Florida and Texas. How "wet" do the beds get inside from the humidity given there's no way condition it out of the ambient air?

Bushwakka USA is not responding to email inquiries. Looks like they are not interested in taking orders. I did not find a user or maintenance/service manual on their website. A service manual is a must have for a trailer imported from South Africa. You sound very excited and proud. I would like to hear your feedback after one year use and your experience in resolving issues with their customer service if there is any. Another thing, the trailers made in RSA or Australia are not the best match for USA conditions. Overlanding in USA means climbing a rocky hill. That trailer is way too heavy for it, and it does not have a furnace/heater to stay warm in the mountains. Also, a tent on wheels from RSA for $40,000, ouch! I did not realize the labor in RSA is so expensive. It is news to me.
@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 3 жыл бұрын
Of course the rig came with a whole host of maintenance/ service manuals for the trailer and for all the individual components as well as a 3 year warranty. I did many months of research and one of the reasons I purchased the trailer was that Bushwakka RSA has been in business for 22 years (much longer than any of the manufacturers listed below) and by all accounts has excellent customer service. Jeffrey at Bushwakka USA is much more responsive to phone calls than email, so I recommend using that method to contact him. As far as cost, you must not be familiar with the current price of off-road/ over-landing trailers. The Bhoma is actually very good value when compared to rigs with similar build quality, especially if you you want 2 double beds. Sure, you can get cheaper rigs that are mass-produced junk that will likely fall apart as soon as you get on a difficult trail. But if you want a really durable rig that can handle the back country and is made in small numbers by hand, it will cost you. For example, there are some great off-road teardrops available but they require a rooftop tent for the second bed. By the time you add the rooftop tent, a similarly equipped Off-Grid Pando 2.0 will run you $40,950 with a smaller awning, no annex or storage cover, less storage, and only one sink. A similarly equipped Boreas XT goes for $40k with a smaller awning, no annex or storage cover, less onboard water, a smaller fridge/ freezer and less storage. A similarly equipped Vorsheer XOC retails for $53k with much smaller kitchen, fridge, no annex or storage cover, a smaller awning,and less water capacity and storage. Other similarly equipped non-teardrops with 2 beds like the Conqueror UEV 440 starts at $38,750 and pushes $45k when optioned out, Mission Overland runs about $45k with a second bed only suitable for children. Black Series HQ12 (second bed is cot-sized) costs $48k, and the Patriot X3 costs $53,990. Then there are the pop-ups which are literally “a tent on wheels” like the Kimberly with a base price of $43,690 the Opus starts at $32k with less ground clearance, a much smaller fridge and kitchen, no awning or annex room, and smaller water capacity. As you can see, I did my research. Your checklist will probably be different from mine, but for me the Bhoma came out on top with the right combination of amenities, capability, build quality, and price. And it’s hand made by an award winning, family-owned manufacturer with over 22 years of experience perfecting and fine-tuning off-road trailers

@@kurtspurgin4942 yeah i think alot of people dont realize how much of a difference there is betweem what you have here and a shitty mass produced teardrop style with a decent frame amd some "offroad" wheels for 10k+... The price point for me was the breaking point but i do understamd the difference in the price points. I ended up building my own, which enabled me to have an extremely off road capable rig for a budget price. But if you dont or cant do what i did, you have to expect to pay the price to have something as capable as what you have here.
@kurtspurgin4942
@kurtspurgin4942 3 жыл бұрын
@@TroydaBoy6160 I totally agree! The hinges, seals, and fittings on this rig are all incredibly durable. From what I understand, most mass produced RVs have a laundry list of problems on delivery and owners should expect to take their brand new rigs in for warranty repairs in the first year. By contrast, the fit and finish on the Bushwakka is excellent and indicative of hand-made quality from a low-volume manufacturer.
