I’ve never owned a lens that I was more astounded by than that 105mm Nikkor. So very sorry I traded it when I switched camera systems. I still have the lens adapter. I had planned to keep that lens despite switching to Sony.

Well, in my 41 years of photography, a "portrait" most often mean head, shoulder and cheast shot, in my early years I used a 135mm 2.8, then for many years I used 85 and 90mm, but now I am back to 135mm and very happy with it (Sony 135mm 1.8 GM and Canon EF 135mm 2.0 before Sony, before Canon it was Hasselblad 110 2.0, 120mm 4.0, 250mm 4.0 and 2x teleconverter), the Sony 135mm 1.8 I also use for street, landscape, nature close up of fx shy butterflies and dragonflies, a very great lens ! By the way "blurry" backgrounds can tend to be much too overrated...

OMG! The Hasselblad 110mm 2.8 and 80mm 2.8 CFi are probably the best portrait lenses EVER made. These two Hasselblad lenses are better than any Zeiss, Voigtlander or Leica glass ever made!

I own the Sony 135 1.8 and I find myself barely using it for portraits. It is quite heavy and the working distance is unpleasent to me. I mostly use my 85mm 1.8 which costs like a quarter of the 135. One thing to keep in mind is that your clients can not tell the difference between 85 and 200mm and they wont care. Focal length choice is just something you as a photographer will have, but in the end it does not matter nearly as much as you might think.

Yep! Last time I shot downtown, I only carried one camera and two lens. It was a sad feeling but it just didn't feel like the old days. The vibe was dystopian. lReason #139 why we moved last week to Houston.

I think the 135mm is the best go-to portrait lens of the bunch. It has really nice bokeh and a unique compression for a reasonable price.

Say what you want about the colors being warmer, but the Sony 135 F1.8 GM is quite a bit sharper across the entire aperture range than the Nikon 105 F1.4. Not to mention the slow focus speeds...

Would LOVE the 200 f/2. Totally agree that you'd have to take a few steps back to get the shot but man, the bokeh on that is just brutally amazing compared to the other lenses. But of the 4 lenses, that 105 1.4 seems like a mini 200 F/2 too!

I have the 105 and love it, it's my best lens :) But the pictures made with the Canon 85 are a dream, too. Hopefully the coming 85 from Nikon will be a fine 1.2 lens, too :)

105mm was my favourite as well, there was just something about tones and as I read comments it seems a lot of people noticed it. Being fan on 50mm, since I like to show more environment around it was interesting to see comparison like this. Canon shooter myself but I have to say that this Nikon 105mm looked dope man.

Thank you so much for this video. This completely captures exactly what I was searching for in a video. Seeing both the close-ups and full body images on all the lenses is so helpful. I absolutely love the compression at 200mm but It's almost a deal breaker with how far away I have to stand to get a full body environmental shot. I haven't tested out the 105 and 135, but I think after this video I have to go for one of those to get the nice compression without having to go into another zipcode.

Hi Manny, I shoot with a 50mm f1.2, a 85 f1.4, a 135 f2, but nothing compares to my 200mm f2! The images from the 200mm are amazing, a cut above any other lens 📷

This was VERY useful (thank you), especially for showing: the degree to which distance from subject-to-background affects DOF, and: the distances you have to be at to frame full-body shots with the 105, 135, & 200mm lenses, affecting the interaction with the subject.. Thank you for doing this test in this way.

I really actually am surprised how much i liked the images out of the 200mm. I never really thought of the 200 as a portrait focal length but there were som nice shots in there. Im gonna have to start experimenting with 200mm to see what i can do now. Thanks Manny. Good job

I liked the 105mm / f- 1.4 as the best for all-round usage portrait, waist height & full length shots easily. If required I can use it at DX to convert to 155mm for head & shoulder or 3/4 waist height shot for better background blur or bokeh.

Every lens produces incredible images. And without side-by-side comparisons I dont know if I could tell which is which. I own the Sony 135mm F1.8 GM and I am totally in love with it. But I maybe would also be in love with everyone of these lenses. Love those videos! Thx Manny

I love my Nikon 85 1.4 and I thought I wanted the 135mm but I may have changed my mind. However, that going to have to wait for now as I just got my Z 6II and I’m loving it so far! Thx for the video

I liked the Nikon 105 f 1.4 for both color and sharpness, but personally use the Tamron 85mm f 1.8 SP myself on Canon 5D IV. Thanks for the comparison Manny!

The Nikon colors 105mm were very warm and magical. 200mm is the winner though. 85 was a little boring, 135 was okay.

Hi Manny - first time commenting. I like your channel - been a subscriber for a while. You seem like a down to earth guy. I have been using the Nikon 105 1.4 for a couple years - it is amazing. I am looking forward to Nikon's release of the 85 1.2 for Z mount next year - I expect that lens to rival and possibly even dethrone the Canon - but like you said they are all so good that a statement like that is largely irrelevant. I’ve had the RF85mm on my R5 and absolutely love it. The 200mm F2 does look nice, though! My go-to is still my 70-200mm 2.8!

105mm all day! The colors, contrast, and focal length are all amazing. I think Nikon is going to be really hitting everyone over the head when they start dropping the f1.4, f1.2 native Z glass based on what they have released so far.

@@chanjeff4406 - yep. But I use Sony a7iii. I don’t have any long lens than 50mm f1.8 So wanted to have any FD mount lens either 85mm, some 100-105mm or 135mm lens for shooting short films. I think these lenses will give beautiful vintage texture to videos.

The Nikon had the best look for people who don’t want to bother editing. But for us editors and retouchers the canon 85 to me has the perfect starting base SOC.

With all the brands, Canon Sony and Nikon, you can change the camera settings to have a flatter (or less) profile if needed.

Back in the day when we used film. We were looking for lenses that we said had contrast. What that really meant is that they has less stray light bouncing around so the blacks were blacker. Nowadays. Two things are going on. We have the dehaze slider in Lightroom that creates the mid-tone contrast we want. While other people are grabbing the left end of the the tone curve and pulling it up and fading the blacks. I'm not seeing anybody talk about this. I've wondered if it would be a good video to compete a more expensive lens straight out of camera versus a cheaper lens with the dehaze slider pulled a little to the right. And then for the people who like The Faded look compete a cheaper lens with a more expensive lens with the blacks faded to dark gray.

I'm a sony user and just love my 135. I agree at times it doesn't work in tight spaces and an 85 might work better. The photos from the 135 are just amazing.

Excellent video lens review Manny. All of these lenses are top of the line. The best of the best. You can’t go wrong with either one. My favorite of all of these lenses is the Canon 200mm f/2. That lens gives such a beautiful look, and I love the beautiful shallow depth of field bokeh background it gives. You are right about one thing you said. The 200mm along with the beautiful Sony 135 f/1.8 lens is that you have to be so far away from your subject. That is the only con of those two lenses. I love the 85mm, but the 105mm is a good sweet spot if want longer that 85mm, but not as long as a 135mm, or longer. Like I said. All of these lenses are FANTASTIC!!!! Top of the line. The best of the best. You can’t go wrong with either one.

I agonized over the 135 1.8 (cheaper, but longer) and the 105 1.4 (more expensive, but manageable distance) and I ended up with the 105 since it has compression and length, but at least you can still communicate with your subject if you want to do full-length.

Good review, the location you choose is one that makes all the lenses look best without showing any weakness, heck I can do wonderful portraits even with the 70-200 2.8 in that location. Having said that, the 200mm is a miracle, if only you can lug it around. I have the 85,105 and then 200mm nikon version of those lenses, the 200mm is a different beast.

Would love to have seen a Z mount 85mm 1.8 as another contender despite its cheap price. I think their new 1.2 series will be damn nice though. For these though i think the colouring and rendering was best with the 105mm F1.4 Nikkor. Did the 135mm Sony look a little too flat?

This is a hard comparison because it's on 3 different systems. I gravitated to the 105 each time but I think thats to do with the superior colors of the nikon as much as the lens. I think I would choose an 85 or 105 because I like the seperation without making her look pasted on her surroundings.

I'm surprised about color rendition: IMO, Nikon 105mm delivers the most pleasing colors > 85mm 1.2 - 135mm 1.8 > 200mm

I was anxious to see you leaving off the rear lens covers! Still, this was an incredibly informative video for anyone having a difficult time deciding which of these lenses is right for them. I love the 104mm f1.4

#beardgang the Nikon 105mm and the Canon 200mm had the most appeal. Something was a bit off with the bokeh on the Canon 85mm especially with the first image. Awesome and insightful video as usual!

Wonderful video style. Seen the lenses being used. Seem kind of an idea of how far away the camera was from the model. Pictures that were head to foot and head to waist. Very interesting. Very watchable. Thank you very much.
