A couple of years' ago I did a rainy downtown block but I struggled to add the rain except in photoshop. I got a few rude comments about that! I was determined to create a diorama with rain and record it all in camera with no photoshop manipulation. What better scene than from Jurassic Park with the jeep sinking into the mud and a T-Rex roaring at you! Here is the end result - do let me know what you think.

Brilliant diorama Kathy of this movie scene. A skillful use of colour on the Mr. Bolin figure stumping down on the vehicle with the kids. Then the issue of making it look as if it was raining. The projector did a respectable job, but I did notice that the T-Rex shadow cast onto the rear wall was causing a visible blank area. I then wondered if there was a way to split the rain projection via prisms and mirrors for the foreground and background to do the filming. Though putting that issue aside, I have to say even without the rain effect, it is still a smashing scene from Jurassic Park. An amazing piece of modelling once again Kathy and maybe there is a CGI master and modelling subscriber watching, that could add the rain frame by frame for you. Now it is time for this old dinosaur to go and get fed too, so do you fancy joining me for a pizza and a monster movie binge, LOL.

This diorama looks amazing (of course, Jurassic Park was and still is one of my favourite movie experiences of all time). I was one of the people suggesting scratching acetate in your last rain scene video and I am so glad you gave it a try. Sorry it didn't work out as well as I'd hoped. Love the use of the projector and the rain video. It really brings some life and movement to a static scene and helps give that extra level of realism. One thing it does give me ideas of, which you might like the sound of, is utilising an old stage trick often called "Peppers Ghost", used to give the impression of a transparent entity (normally a ghost) on a live stage production. Maybe a thought for a Hallowe'en themed scene??? Continually loving your videos and tutorials. You are always a great source of knowledge and inspiration.

Only things that could improve it would have been to include the rail for the explorers, and possibly the actual road. The mud was on the side of the tour road rather than a dirt road there, and the metal track that powered the vehicles... Potentially, also adding the toilet.

Amazing build! Absolutely smashed it! One thing I was wondering was, is this dio designed to always be in rain? If it is, then would it help to add gloss to the Rex and some puddles in the mud, to help sell it in more? At the moment it feels too dry, imo. Also, If you wanted to create a more realistic rain effect, could you use a planter mister to get some small beads of moisture, combined with the projector? Could create a cool look?
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 2 жыл бұрын
I did drench it in gloss varnish but it just doesn't show. The Model Wasser stuff probably would have worked better as it is thicker. I am always wary about adding water because white glue turns white again when wet and I don't want any odd reactions!

This is really a Masterpiece of artificial Rain. By the Way, now that you have the Projector, you can also try to project the Blinken Lights on R2D2 in your Diorama. But maybe you would need a special lens in front of the projector to get the Picture-projection small enough for the R2D2 model. Please try it.

@@KathyMillatt Hello Kathy, maybe it is possible to focus on a small thing like the R2D2 bei placing a photo lens in the reverse direction. Unfortunately, I cannot tast it, I don't have a projector here. For a first test, maybe a very low cost lens from Ebay will do it. By the way, the woodn dust from the milling machine, that I offered you some days before, see the latest Boomer Diorama Video, starting at roundabout Minute 8, he is covering his artifice tree trunks with this material, but it is not Material from me. There are many other purposes it can be used for, just the fantasie ist the limit. If you are afraid, I'm a psycopath, maybe you have a post box or someone else I can send it to. I don't have so much money, that I can be a patreon for you or support you with money, but I can give you some useful Material this is maybe a better way to use my short pressed budget. Hi Kathy! For PLA print smoothing, I would recommend a technique I picked up from Aaron over at Galactic Armory... Use the UV resin from resin printing and a sponge brush to lightly coat the print then cure it in the sun or a UV light box. Repeat the process until your layer lines are gone then lightly sand to complete. I've been using this technique for over a year now and I hardly sand at all anymore. It is a minimal 90% of sanding time shaved off of all of my prints! 👍
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 2 жыл бұрын
I am going to have to try that but I am worried about it filling in the fine detail lines too. Is that a problem for you?
@MichaelCravatt
@MichaelCravatt 2 жыл бұрын
@@KathyMillatt It can be but if you are careful (and patient) in those areas, it's no more of a problem than straight sanding or using putty or Bondo. When I do accidentally cause a problem with fine lines, my etching tool corrects it nicely. I make custom toys as a hobby/side hustle and much of that is 18" & 31" customized Jakks Pacific clone troopers. Their helmets and accessories are small but my finished products are smooth with great detail and required minimal sanding on my part. The extra bonus using this method, especially for the full sized cosplay armor and helmets that I make, is that uv cure time is dramatically less than bondo & filler. * If I remember correctly, Aaron first showed that method in his Boba Fett helmet build.

A well done and dramatic diorama Kathy . The projected rain is excellent . Just one thing in the last two videos you have referred to Tamiya putty as an epoxy putty , the tube stuff isn't epoxy . Epoxy is a two part putty ( I'm sure you know this anyway ) . Tamiya epoxy putty might have been a better choice for filling those gaps , it's thicker and can be smoothed over with ware to minimise post sanding . Keep up the excellent work , always look forward to the next video .

"It's time to bring the T-Rex to life," says Kathy. "Noooo!!! It didn't end well in Jurass ..." "Oh." says I. 😀 Great work as usual. It looks fab. My only comment - and I'm being ultra picky here - is that (I presume) the shadow of the T-Rex seems to make it look like s/he has got a rain repelling forcefield. I wonder if it would work with back projection? Though you might need two projectors, one back projection and one front projection to fill in. Or if the projector were higher up and pointed a bit downwards, so T-Rex's shadow was shorter, and out of sight? Might have funny direction rain though....
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 2 жыл бұрын
I gave the camera as close as possible to the projector but as the two can’t be in the same space, there are always shadows. Back projection could work but a bit beyond me right now.

I did spray him with loads of gloss varnish but it didn’t really seem to show. Perhaps a thicker paint type was needed.

I also saw that STL file, but thats too big for me :D I wondered if you could downscale that to a 1/35 scale and still be printable
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 2 жыл бұрын
You can downscale as long as none of the pieces become too small. The SLA version is already smaller.

Hi Kathy. I just discovered your channel by way of the dude who does abandoned miniatures, as he mentioned you. Love your amazing work, especially this Jurassic Part diorama. Love your quirky fun personality too. I've never 3D printed before and not very technical and going to start out using foam and bulsa wood to build dioramas. Do you have any advice? Thank you
@KathyMillatt

My only advice is to enjoy it! It takes time to build up the skills so start small and just try out new stuff.

@@KathyMillatt Thanks again KM 😁 I saw your foam based snowy bridge model video. Really amazing. Through your website do you have an email I could possibly pick your brain at? I'm new to this but a fast learner. Glad you like the scene. It was so epic in the film, which I waited 6 years to see, with almost 2 years of "pandemic" time in hold. I've lifted great images of the two part orange/yellow cabin from Google, and high angle shots, wide angle shots. After just a year of release, I think that scenes already iconic. My second build I plan to make the second part of the No Time To Die pre title sequence where Bond jumps off the bridge in Matera, also now iconic. So that will be harder, but thinking of 1:24 scale and chearing background with a nice HD print out, and making bridge foreground as well as river below, mountain scale, trees all in miniature 😁 Again, loving your videos, your my new You Tube idol lol Have you made a video on how you git into model/diorama making, learnt your skills etc? If not, I'd love to see one like that. God bless Stevie G

@@thejamesbondshow9754 Always happy to chat. Those are both iconic scenes. I use IG or FB messaging for chatting to people. Just use my work FB not my personal as I never go on except for work! I have told my story loads of times but I don't think I have on a specific YT video - more on the podcasts or chats I have been on which would be on other people's channels.

Kathy, may I give you an idea for the rain? If you make a diorama with a reservoir underneath with water.and then pump it up with a small pond pump..make small holes in the diorama so that the water can drain into the reservoir.The water that is pumped up goes through a few tubes with small holes. Like they do in movies, but on a small scale.
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt Жыл бұрын
I find that water does not scale well as ripples and droplets are too large. How would you make the water fine enough for the scale rain?
@Breacher1968
@Breacher1968 Жыл бұрын
I hadn't thought of that, I see the problem..maybe with very small holes where the water comes out.And then with enough pressure,I just looked this up (it's an example) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ldJpgpeEx5zMpZc.html if you make the holes smaller, you get smaller droplets. A preheated sewing needle might work.. It might be an idea. By the way, the Diorama looks fantastic.
