We stumbled across a sailors dream, an epic Sailing Boat Project!
One of only 3 ever made, a never sailed, never launched, piece of maritime innovation which provides us with the perfect platform to build a fully electric cruiser.
In this video we take you through it on our first visit to the boat and talk you through the plans, including our living plans - a boatbuilders take on a van conversion.

@SailHub Yes!!! I recently bought the french Renault cousin of your german Porche a "Patago 39". It's less fancy but very similar also 1 of 3 that I know off. The plan is to sail it this summer back to Belgium for a major electrical refit this winter. I'd love to also gradually upgrade the interior over time. Your content and the knowledge you share will be very beneficial!

@XArthieX that sounds amazing.. just did some Googling, very different boats here but man, she looks ready to take on a war at sea. Great start to a new adventure! I'll be following along for sure. Getting a bare hull from Switzerland to Scotland is an adventure in itself. I think you mentioned the French canals, but the Rhine is also navigable from the Swiss border at Rheinfelden all the way to Rotterdam. A 20hp outboard on an improvised bracket, plug some holes, a bit of ballast and away you go. Best of luck from Pete in Wanaka, New Zealand.

Maybe not relevant, but I went fishing on a de-commisioned Brittish mine sweeper named the Admiral out of Morrow Bay. All alluminum boat was the loudest vessel I've ever been on. Sounded like a city bus. But I did catch 4 albacore in the 40lb range, so it was a win, but holy crap what a loud boat.

@@cyrilvermeil thanks for that Cyril. I hope we can deliver! I think having been in the industry quite a while we have dealt with a lot and seen many views over the years. I don’t want say what’s best for who, just lay it on a plate for people to make their own descisions. There are reasons for all designs, materials and equipment and we intend to point out giver best usage along our journey. I guess what I’m saying is we want to remain factual as opposed to opinionated. As for the woodwork, we will be doing all sorts of it in the future but the boat fit our probably won’t be what be expect! 😉…. What I know is that it will be a good test of my skills I’m sure!

KZfaq made a great suggestion at last! Nice project, I have an aluminium Koopman 35 from 1982 with wooden topsides and interior, no idea who built it though. Being in Spain the issue becomes getting materials and finding the skills to do the work I cannot do. Previously I worked for VT, Pendennis and ANT which took me to Blohm & Voss and Lurssens as a Marine Electrician / Electronics technician and having spent time working on a wide variety of small craft and super yachts I know good design and workmanship when I see it. I'm imagining your project will be a cross between Sampson Boat co. and Distant Shores, so my only advice is "Keep It Simple" as I can see you are already very quality minded.
@SailHub
@SailHub 23 күн бұрын
Hi, how nice to hear this, such compliments! I really hope we can live up to this! Sounds like quite the adventure you have been on! Koopman’s are just wonderful boats! Super lucky there chap! As for our plan, we don’t really do simple, it’s just not in the genes… but, we’ve struggled to enjoy a lot of sailing for to working on things so this time we’re gonna make sure we get the sailing and traveling in. The quality can wait sometimes I guess!

Cheers James, near enough 40k mate. Doesn’t seem a bad price to me but it’s not really a full hull yet.. The ballast has been the biggest shock so far, it’s more than the average rig! I’ve not made many keels to date and the price blew my mind. We’ve had foundry prices of 40k to cast the lead! And then there’s the transport and fitting on top!

Thats an insane price to ship that boat. I believe you could ship that across the US for $2-3k. Its not a very large boat hull and probably not very heavy. I guessing my Dodge Ram pickup would be able to tow this hull.

Your dodge would be perfect for the job. I’m told she should weigh 5T with the ballast on. The problem isn’t the distance, it’s four countries and the time taken for import export paperwork and finally putting it’s all on a ferry to our little island. Still, a frightening cost!

You could of made a plaster and glass mould of the other bulb ,25 - 50 mm thick would have been enough then thicken it up when you got home. this would have given it some drying time as well . i have made bulbs using this method before and it works . mixing the plaster and raw glass no resin just allow time for all the moisture to be gone . then place the mould in a sand bed for pouring . anyhow that's a great looking boat you have found , looking forward to see it being finished off. If I am not mistaken the hull was offered by KM some time ago, I recommended it to some friends. Interesting that it is popping up again. Think carefully about where you want to continue building, transportation to the canals is also expensive. I have built a Reinke 13M myself in ten years and a closed hall would save you a lot of time. Try to make contact with a foundry to cast the lead, we were admitted there during the company vacations with a casting master. lots of good boats done in aluminium , they can withstand a lot of punishment if one misses the water ever ,and land on a reef or other inconveniently dry object . my only sail on one was a bit off putting , a roughly made all out race boat ,looked very dodgy ,and actually the keel fell of a few weeks after that ,middle of a race [ they lost that race ,even though the weight reduction could theoretically have been advantageous , the mast slowed them down ,as it was creating a lot of drag ,underwater .]. You may have to bend the all electric a bit ,put a donkey in it ,to motor through the french canals and up to your build home .

on a boat that size, "maybe you'll ditch the wheel and put in a tiller????" you guys really want to deal with that at speed? in arctic waters when you could instead be steering from inside? apart from that -- you have found yourselves an incredible hull, and a perfect platform for an all-electric drivetrain/powerplant. looking forward to seeing how it goes!!

Yeah, the tillers an interesting thought. It’s simplicity we’re looking at and weight saving which is quite surprising. We’re not planning on staying in the arctic, it’s just a place we want to go so inside wheelhouse isn’t really required. I guess there are a number of large boats on tillers and ours isn’t all that heavy, the other thing is the twin rudders, this should massively reduce tiller efforts. I think we will run a test first, I’m not into gung ho descisions! Anyhow, we put our boat up for sale traveled to a field in the middle of nowhere and there she was. We decided if we could sell our boat we should do it. Our boat sold in 3 days!! Beautifull go anywhere and fast yacht. Congratulations. Top choice. If you want to do the initial work to get it afloat and motorised in CH please be aware of stay limitations and customs for parts you'll need. The plan to sail your boat up to the Uk may cost more then the quote you got. You'll need a crane ond oversize transport anyway to get near the water. Friendly advise : ask several hauliers for qoutes providing as much detail as possible (wt/dims/plans/lift points)...the type of crane they think they'll need for example can make up to 500 EUR difference per lift. Giving a large time slot for the job can also help the price. Don't just ask locally. The most competitive companies for those jobs are located in the Netherlands. Good luck !

Seriously consider tiller steering indeed. It's a much more direct way of steering the boat, very usefull for close quarters handling and let's be realistic, on long stretches the autopilot will be doing all of the steering. When on autopilot you can put the tiller upright freeing lots of space in the cockpit. On the downside, you don't get to stand majestically behind a giant steering wheel the way most people on boats with wheel steering do all the time. My Dufour 35 is tiller steered and I love it.
@SailHub

@@SailHub And it is much less complicated ensuring reliability. As for generating electricity I would consider solar as well. I have just 200W of solar coupled to a 500Ah lithium battery which is enough for all my electrical needs. I cook on gas though. @@SailHub Tiller on a 40' is fine. And if you find yourself struggling, just fit a longer tiller. My boat was fitted with one from the yard in 1973 and when it got a bit tiresome for the previous owner, he just made a longer one. Since a fitted a Jefa drive to self steering, the tiller is in the vertical position nearly all the time. Do consider a wind vane self steering unit as well. @SailHub
@SailHub 23 күн бұрын

Yeah I did see that you have a retractable Keel and that's pretty good but make sure to replace all your hoses and make sure they're braided three times the pressure rating go for the best hoses on hydraulic and it would be a good idea to put a surge tank on your hydraulic system because hydraulic systems can be fickle every now and then and you don't need that when it comes to your Keel. Because it's important piece of the boat stabilization. Oh yeah and you'll probably need to put new seals around the retractable system and make sure you carry backups cuz remember this thing is retracting in and out of your boat and that's where and pair on seals that's another thing that can go wrong because it's not fixed@@SailHub

Interesting boat, but I hate water tank ballast , stick with good old firmly attached ballast rather than water sloshing around in a tank. Like that retractable keel. things grow up inside and the more moving parts the more problems, those unprotected Spade rudders are good for racers, not so much for cruisers. Among the sailing community, 90 to 95% of rudder problems are with spade rudders
@SailHub

Hey up, I can see your reasoning here for all of this. Although they can pretty much lol be overcome with design. I will go into all of thy later I’m sure. But of course.. the lift keel, well thy just mens more maintenance. The thing with boats is every weird design out there is still right for someone! And this boat… we were that someone. As for the water ballast, I don’t see the issue, it’s not like it’s actually part of it’s required stability, all extra which you don’t need to use if you don’t want too.

As a boat builder you should know the caravan stuff is exactly the same just 50% off.

To be honest I find that’s sometimes the case, but not always. There are usually small but significantly important differences. However…. The price difference would suggest that it’s a much greater difference in the manufacturing process than it actually is. On the other side of the coin though… small changes to industrial manufacturing often costs a lot and we’re a niche market… Boat added tax right…

@@SailHub yeah Na, I've worked with the biggest boat supply chains in Australia for 40 years. In the same yard. Dealing with the same owner. All the seals plastic and stainless are exactly the same nowadays. If you ask an honest supplier they'll tell you that unless you are going top end you are buying the same product. And let's face it, it's not even worth going top end anymore as the quality between there product from even 10 years ago to today is ridiculous. If I'm seating a hatch and going to need to replace it in 5 years or reseat it again because it warps I'm paying 100s not multiple 1000s. Since the 2000s the decline has been noticeable. I would agree for the 90s and prior now they're all made in the same place and brand labeled, most manufacturers don't produce their own products anymore. But that's a cracker of a find. Did you say how much it was? At least you know it won't delaminate in its first 6 months like 70% of new plastic boats do nowadays. It is a stainless hull yeah? Imagine trying to build it today itd be out of reach of most people.

@@SailHub not sure if reply stayed, I have pissed off they YT gods and sporadically my posts get removed. Been building repairing boats for 40 years dealing with same supplier, the largest in Australia. He's the one that informed me back in early 2000s. Before that I'd agree but even from 10yrs ago the products have declined. It was a great post dam it. Fantastic find though, is it aluminium or stainless? Excellent and exciting!

Hey up chap, I rekon you’ve got some good points there, mind you a lot changed in the last few years. There is a lot of crap out there and that’s all crap. The good stuff is low turnover and usually made in house, the rest is well… let’s say imported from somewhere and not often very good. Stainless wise.. 316L will be the choice of any self respecting brand. Unless it’s Duplex where required, aside from that RV stuff is 304. Small differences that many don’t know about, usually not even the salesmen, just the fabricators themselves but it makes a massive durability difference. As for hatches warping, again a choice of quality really, we pays for what we get. I personally have never had to refit a quality unit for warping, but that’s just my experience. As for the hull she’s Alustar aluminium. A rarity indeed. Cheers for your input too, really cool to hear your experiences 👌👍
