Swami Sarvapriyananda conducts a Q&A after a discourse on “The Ultimate Truth” (Based on Mandukya Karika). List of questions answered:
0:17 -- How does the Vedantic standpoint compare with the scientific
standpoint of the Big Bang?
8:57 -- If everything including Vedanta is an appearance, how can true
knowledge be attained by studying it? How do we see Brahman as
Existence Itself, and not just something which exists?
31:47 -- If Consciousness Itself is beyond feelings/emotions
(happiness, sadness etc.), then how can Bliss be the nature of
Consciousness?
39:26 -- If one can't experience Ananda (Bliss), then what good is it?
41:30 -- How can one realize that one is not one's experiences (that
one is unaffected/untainted by them)?

ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT VEDANTA NY
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Questions asked: 00:12 - How does the Vedantic standpoint compare with the scientific standpoint of the Big bang? 08:54 - If everything including Vedanta is an appearance, how can true knowledge be attained by studying it? 24:10 - How do we see Brahman as existence itself and not just something that exists? 31:46 - If consciousness itself is beyond feelings, then how is consciousness's nature blissful? Contradictory? 41:25 - There is so much bondage with experiences as we have been having so many experiences for such a long time, it's difficult to break away from it. Is there some methodical way we can follow to achieve that?

Bliss is the word we use to describe it's nature, and it would be the closes description from the stand point of the mind. However, ananda is not an emotion or feeling and is hard to describe from a non-dual perspective. It's like the nature of a kind person is to be kind. They don't need to feel anything to know that they are kind, kindness is just their being and this is reflected in how they express this kindness. It's the same for our nature. The Self does not experience bliss, bliss is the nature of it's being and this bliss is why it is the way it is.

An absolutely beautiful Q&A session🙏. I particularly liked the section when Swami was talking about Consciousness in the sense that if you are a materialist and don't bring consciousness into the explanation then you are only telling half the truth . So if you have a conference of Cosmologists talking about the universe they can talk in great depth about scientific explanations about the Cosmos but all that discussion , and all that scientific observation takes place within Consciousness which is conveniently forgotten , but something that very inconveniently science knows little about . They are in the cinema taking the movie to be real . At one time films in the cinema had a habit of breaking . You are absorbed in the movie and then the film breaks and the lights come on . You were never in the movie ( which in itself was a set of flickering images that you put together in your mind .))you were all along in the movie . For most people - certainly for me - when the film breaks and the light comes on

.......( continuation of comment above )...when the light comes on then that is when your vedantic journey starts are recommences . That certainly happened to me as a 6 year old boy . One minute the world was real , the next a realization that the world was an appearance in consciousness , but I had no idea what consciousness was . Hence my journey started or restarted , but really it was Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi calling me from Arunachala . Wake up wake up !!!! Or in those days when you could hire a boat on a lake near us , when your hour was doing me the Boatman would call from the shore " Come in no 1 , your time is up ". 🙏🕉️

We experience everything through our consciousness because our bodies allow us to do so. I will believe in Vedanta when my consciousness travels to a far off place and gleans events without my body being present and I remember it all when I wake up. Until then, it is materialism FTW.

There is no experience outside Consciousness. Nothing can exist apart from Consciousness. Consciousness reveals itself through all experiences and through the existence of all objects. We are already the One, whom we are searching for. This is a great illusion, yet no one is able to see it.

Starting at 10:10, a wonderful meditation. I changed the tense to 1st person: I am the truth myself. I am satchitananda, the truth myself, Not this body and mind. But my problem is that under the influence of ignorance, I do not know the fact about myself that I am satchitananda, And in that satchitananda ALONE this body and mind are appearing. But I don’t know that it’s appearing in satchitananda. I just think, this is what is there, and so I am this. It’s an error that I am making. We are all making this error: That because the body and mind are experienced, Immediately I jump to the conclusion, “I AM this thing.” It’s based on ignorance of my real nature. Ignorance of my real nature as satchitananda leads to the error “I am body/mind.”

Happy to hear any & all suggestions please 🙏 Ps. Can the source God, if indeed all~powerful, destroy itself? If it can’t then I have to assume that it’s not all~powerful. Or am I missing something? Actualisation of an Objective Versus Realization of The Meaning Why one asks the Question :- Who Am I? When the apparent vagaries ,activities and reasons of Life fail to address the core issue and when they fail to fetch the desired degree of Peace /Bliss, this aspect clubbed with an experiential state of Futility and Im-permanency of such bouts of happiness in any act /thought, one is directed towards the Quest for the Meaning of The Life... Though the Quest is for finding the Meaning of Life, it mostly is redirected / reduced if I may so say, ( even without one's knowledge) towards finding a space wherein one gets Unalloyed Bliss that is to say The Objective of one's pursuits. Thereafter it is a Rooted State wherein one remains in that State.... The ESSENTIAL QUESTION :- WHO AM I is addressed in RELATIVE terms.. from a transient state to a Relatively Permanent state one advances in the quest. But where is the EXPERIENTIAL - CONSCIOUSNESS in the Absence of body-mind-intellect complex? When is one aware of the deep sleep and dream state? In wakefulness When is the question Who am I asked and further answered? In Wakefulness Can the aspect of Awareness examined in any other state other than wakefulness? NO Where/ when does the Experience of Awareness cease to exist? When one is either in Dream or in Deep sleep. Who is this EXPERIENCER? The I Can there be any I in Exclusivity... separate from the Gross? Isn't the I all INCLUSIVE??? Can the sense of I be there in a Rock? mostly cannot as the very Rock is again an inclusivity of The I.... without the I there cannot be anything.... Anything everything is an expansion or extension of the I ......If I is not there nothing remains and in I remains everything the sentient insentient everything.....

Kindly Accept my Pranam Blessed One.. Can you kindly address this doubt , which I deem a barrier in my quest for the Truth. When it is said:- the CONSCIOUSNESS /AWARENESS is The ETERNAL, isn't it that we are claiming only a RELATIVE -PERPECTUALITY vis a vis the temporal elements like body, earth and the like? When we substantiate the argument on CONSCIOUSNESS as an ETERNITY, mostly the aspects of jagrat swapna and Sushupti are brought into the stage. And in their backdrop the All Pervasive Substratum of Consciousness is presented. And it is essentially convincing . But ,for the Realization of such a Substratum, and its all pervasiveness, the state of WAKEFULNESS ( at the physical plane) and a wakefulness /alertness ( at a psychological /mental plane) are very much a Necessity. Isn't it the memory / and the associated experiences of the swapna and Sushupti that act as a primary pointers to the question, What is that which had been a CONSTANT in all the realms of Jagrat Swapna and Sushupti. Question 1. Why the TRUTH, more Aptly ,THE NITHYA VASTHU needs an ANITHYA vasthu for its VALIDATION? Question 2. TILL WHEN DOES THIS SENSE OF AWARENESS /CONSCIOUSNESS PREVAIL IN A PERSON... WILL IT BE A MATTER OF CONTINUITY ( AT REALIZATIONAL LEVEL) EVEN AFTER THE BODY PERISHES? BUT THEN (AS IN THE FIRST QUESTION FOR THE REALIZATION DOESN'T IT REQUIRE A CONTEXT :- A BODY ( WAKEFUL/ALERT ) IN THIS CASE TO VALIDATE THE EXISTENCE / PREVALENCE OF CONSCIOUSNESS? PRANAMS...

Dear Sarbapriyananda ji, after you approach to enlightenment you can read, vedanta, you can count beads, you can deliver speech to other interested people or Mumukchhyu, once you realise the self you are not in bondage for anything or against anything. Even Lord Krishna says in Geeta, He has nothing to do throughout the Universe yet he is driving the chariot of Arjun. Mukti means free of all bondages and from every action and inaction . When you are acting, really you are not acting, when you are not acting actually you are acting,, whatever you do the realisation never erases even for trillion of years, should we accept the time and space. Once we realise the Brahma one is beyond time and space. You can walk, you can eat, you can do charity work, you can read Vedanta as much you like, there is no bondage at all, there is no bondage at all after realisation of the ultimate truth or Mukti or Nirvana term really does not matter. Whatever the body does you are not doing it so where can be bondage or obstacle after realisation of the ultimate truth? Whatever is done that is done by our senses and our body not by us. we are absolute truth, the absolute truth does not do anything. We are existence, conciousness bliss so existence conciousness bliss does not do anything it is the light only.

Here's how I might have tried to answer the first question (00:17) : Big Bang Theory states that all the matter and energy of the universe was at one time concentrated in an infinitesimally small singularity, which then expanded. We can think of the singularity as sat-cit-ananda. From a vedantic point of view, we might say that the space that has appeared to separate the many particles of the universe can be thought of as illusory. From that standpoint, we never stopped being a singularity! The big bang is not an event that occurred in the past; it is continually occurring even at this moment. Brahman is both the infinitesimal singularity and the vast, unfathomable universe. It is not one thing or the other; it is both! But if we put these two manifestations of Brahman at opposite end of the spectrum of time, then to our eyes it appears to change from one form into the other, and therefore the universe appears to be expanding.

s J Swami Vivekananda says that Why we're ignorant of our true nature is not known... why does the Perfect think of itself in this human nature as imperfect is not known... But it is the Truth that is what the Hindu says... that we're That ... Sat Chit Ananda.. The answer to the second question is Big No... anyone can realise God or The Truth .. but it has its own consequences which most human beings are not able to sacrifice.... The Question is how Badly do you want Realisation.... if you want it like you need to breath.. you'll get it in that moment itself...

Sayan Kundu 🙏thank you for replying. I have been ardent follower of swamiji’s talks. So this followup question to your answer. So if we do not know why ignore came into picture and we need to believe that we are ignorant. So is not like theist belief that we need to believe first in God first. Similarly in vedant we need to believe first that we are ignorant of our true nature. I mean is not the underlying belief of vedanta. With all due respect 🙏🙏someone pls reply

As repeated why Swami Vivekananda and Paramhanash yoganannad...we can't know the answer of that question...If Maya acted upon Brahman ( Brahman limited by time and space), then the Brahman ceases to be Brahman...hence the question is self contradictory.

Their is no beginning of ignorance. That is the most radical answer I can say. Actually Swamiji also answered the same question in other lectures. Now, tell me since when you don't know about KZfaq? Let's assume you will have no satisfactory answer. Because ignorance has no starting point. But you can say I came to know about KZfaq when I started to see KZfaq. Last two questions, since when you don't know that sky is not blue? Since when you came to know about the fact that sky has no colour?

You are not the body and mind you are Eternal Spirit trapped in the body, you have forgotten over many incarnations. The Matrix is your own bio computer brain machine that keeps You in the illusion of being a physical Being in a physical world via the nervous system and the five senses. Meditation is putting the body and mind to sleep but staying Awake and Alert inside so you can re experience your Self as Eternal Spirit again. If you remain in this state after Meditation its called Nirvana, Samadhi, the Tao cosmic Consciousness, Born again Jesus, Self Realization Yogananda, Inner Witness Krishnamurti. Obtaining the golden fleece Greek mythology, Garden of Eden, etc etc etc all the same. THAT IS THE TRUTH

The ONLY thing that the Swami needed to demonstrate in order to debunk the materialistic standpoint is to show that he could experience that microphone without his body. Since he cannot do that, the materialistic viewpoint still holds good. Extraordinary claims need extraordinary proofs. Has his consciousness experienced life through another body? Can the Swami swap bodies with one of his other Vedantic colleagues? Can he remotely view events on the other side of the globe as they are happening and provide a live commentary (since his consciousness is not limited by his body)? If he cannot demonstrate any of this, the materialistic viewpoint still stands and the Vedantic viewpoint is forever debunked.

This is why our bodies need to be valued greatly as opposed to the unproven notions of soul/spirit. Spiritualists have it all in reverse. If you disrespect or lose your body, you lose it all.
