This was one of the best reviews of these types of stoves I've ever watch. I have two of the stoves in this testing, Whe I was station in Germany back in the mid 80's almost every Soilder had this are that type of small portable stove that they took to the fields.

Thanks for the video. I have a soto amicus and love it. I also have a turbo 270 from camping gaz and love it also (hard to find canisters for this one but the quality is there.) I recently purchased a firebox nano and am enjoying using it. I hike and camp in the low country of SC and while I've never been to Louisiana I imagine it is similar. I'm a heavy user of your great channel. Thanks for all you do and take good care

I have MS and thoroughly enjoy camping/backpacking. I enjoy watching your videos. Although I’m no longer able to backpack or hike, I many stoves, but am limited to using them on the patio out back Keep doing what you doing !! Check out the VIRE Rocket stove. It’s really interesting, not that heavy, and very efficient.

Thanks Ernie, aways enjoy your informative videos. For one like this however, the missing ingredient is a summary in spreadsheet form, that could be seen on screen and screenshot for further consideration. You likely made a chart like that in doing the research so a screenshot of it would be great. I have the original Pocket Rocket and since the differences between it and the best seem to be a sip of morning coffee in time, I'll just use it until it gives up on me, which is something that I don't expect will happen in my lifetime. So in my next incarnation I'll try one of the others. Sure enjoy these studies though.

Great comparison!! Good to see they were all pretty much in line. I have the GSI Glacier in my car camping box and the Pocket Rocket 2 in my regular cook kit. Will probably pick up the BRS as a back-up. Would love to see u take a look at the Olicamp Ion stove!! Keep up the great videos!

Great job Ernie! As others have mentioned, a table/chart would be nice. There you could sort by fuel used, cost, burn times, and weight. As you pointed out - burn times are all pretty close. Probably even closer in the real world. As a lightweight backpacker on a budget and primary alcohol stove user, boil times are not that important to me. In that context, the BRS is the clear winner. In my experience, built in igniters generally fail at some point and become useless weight and complexity. Thanks for taking the time for such a great review.

Peizo igniters are easily repaired. Replacements cost pennies.

I appreciate your testing videos. It would be nice to see a chart with comparative results at the end; although for me it doesn't matter on this video, I own a Windmaster also :).

Thanks for such an informative comparison. If you make another video, it would also be helpful to compare other practical aspects like how stable is it with a small pan for eggs, stability on a slightly uneven surface, how hot does the base get, quality/ safety/ build, your opinion for each budget range (see amazon questions for what people want to know/ video ideas). Thanks again :) I ended up buying the Coleman Bottle Top Propane Stove since I knew Coleman should be safe, and it seemed stable enough for pots and pans. My older bagpacking stove has to be held for stability, even for boiling water. Also I would not recommend to use to for more than 5 minutes continuously, just because how hot the base gets (still learning about basing camping/ gas stove safety as a noob).

As I start making videos, I regret giving away so much of my stuff over the past few years. I'm down to 2 canister stoves and 3 alcohol burners. Guess I'll have to go buy more eventually. 🤣 I am 100% a Windmaster fan. I still have a BRS, but it never gets used. i own two in this list, two different animals, but i guess the real question is what do you need each stove for. i have on of the ebay $10 blow torch stove and the Colman peak 1. only reason i have the peak on is the fact i found out the ebay blowtorch it great at boiling water but not much else. the peak 1 has better flame control. both are cheap but both have their place. great contribution thanks for you work

Very nice comparison! Although I have a feeling that the larger stoves aren't being done justice with the small pot. They're designed for larger pots/pans so much more of the heat is wasted to the side compared to smaller stoves which output most of the heat in the center. Also I think that no stoves are universally great for both pot and pans. The larger stoves are better for pans as they'll heat the pan more evenly - where as the smaller stoves can boil water faster and the center heavy heat isn't an issue.

Thank god I chose the right stove according to your video, and my research didn't lead me astray. I ended up with the Soto Windmaster, only because I wanted to ditch the weight of a separate windscreen, and it didn't hurt that was made in Japan and not someplace that doesn't like America. I've used it now for 3 seasons and it has worked without fail. So far the piezo hasn't failed but it could, so I bring a small Bic lighter just in case. Thanks for the video, it made me feel better about my decision.

Great overview and “lab test”. Real world testing is a real must however to be truly useful. Test each stove with a 10-15 mph breeze without a wind screen (extra weight to carry). The differences will be a lot greater. Also, no mention of high altitude, cold weather performance- regulated stoves shine here. Thanks again for the brief overview. I would have trouble classifying this as an “Ultimate” test.

Bought my Windmaster based on 2 videos. Your comparison video and one done by @theoutdoorgearreview Honestly, it's spectacular! Used on to of 11,000 foot mountains in CO and it performs great! Replaced my JetBoil and I couldn't be happier

I have just watched both of those videos as well, and I am seriously contemplating purchasing the soto windmaster as a result of this. 👍🏿😊 I have just purchased a little Njord stove which arrived today and I'm looking forward to trying it out as well. It is a NZ company, and I think the stove is made in China. It was only NZ35 so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

I bought the windmaster over the pocket rocket deluxe based on your reviews. While I have only had it about a month, I am definitely happy with my choice. The windmaster is an excellent little stove!

I have a cheaper stove which is excellent, plus I have a very old (heavier) stove which is stunning! I was looking at purchasing the Soto Windmaster stove based on multiple reviews (and I still may someday), but I have just won first prize in a Wilderness Magazine competition, and I have today received the MSR Hubbba Hubba 2 tent, plus the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe stove!! 🙆🏻♀️😅😍🏕️⛰️ I'm blown away, and delighted, needless to say!

Ernie: I just viewed this video again and realize you sure did a lot of work to produce this. Ha! Let alone obtaining all these stoves! Wow! I was thinking of switching (can't believe I was thinking this) to my ole MSR Whisperlite for the CDT because of the elevations and temperature issues. Watching yours and others videos, and reading up on the performance of cannister Iso Butane stoves I realize I won't have any significant problems. SO, on with my PR 2. Thanks though! Great videos! Forget this earlier entry: Please do a comparison of SVEA and Jetboil. No one has done that. Seems like Jetboil is a modern version of Svea n Svea might weigh a lot less!

I have that same stove by red camp, but it says northern lights for the brand, and it’s mostly titanium! Claims to be made in California. Same case even! Cannot find one like it anywhere. I got it at Sportsman’s guide in St Paul, MN about twenty years ago. Quite the relic! Still works great!

The more interresting aspect with any stove is how realiable it is over time. If it boils water in 3 or 4 minutes really doesn't matter when you are out there. How does it attach to the canister? Is it resting on the rim or only on the threads? How well does the adjustment work? Does it mater if you bump in or pull the adjuster or does it only schange flame once twisted?

Well, I'm getting the JB Mighty Mo because it perfectly fits their ceramic pot and that is supposed to be easy to clean. Sold. [JB stoves seem to require a specific gap between their burner head and flux ring pots. Bit expensive to find out that the MSR or Soto cause problems].

I was feeling bad having got a MSR Pocket Rocket 2 recently with all this Soto love. I feel better because although it's slower, it's more efficient. That's important to me more than piezo or a few seconds more. Also seem reviews where ironically it performed badly in the wind - either from a fan or real world - given the name. Only thing I think the Soto Windmaster might be better for - and it was a lot more than what I paid for my MSR btw, I got a good deal with the MSR - is holding larger pots and simmering, and less noise. I don't trust piezos to keep working!

bought the original Msr pocket rocket when it first came out and I am still using it now. I don't want any other gas stove at the costs they charge . This stove is the bees knees.

Thanks Ernie, Do you have a feeling on how the diameter of the burner affects the boil time? Like does the flame contained under the pot boil faster or slower than when the flame goes up the sides? It just seems more energy waste with the latter.

Great review. Like to cook on campfire but the stoves are good for fast hot water, and where you can not use wood. I don't like wood-stick stoves. Prefer Trangia, or alcohol can.

I'd likd to see the glacier burner reviewed. Its not a high mountain light weight burner, but canoeing out with a group of 4 to island camping it seems a super cheap maybe back up option

I've used ( and trashed) an MSR 2, a GSI classic, and a Peak 1 whatever. Currently running a Peak 1 other, and an Ozark Trail 4 in 1. Which I got because of the adapter. TBH, my main criteria is how stable is any stove with a U.S. canteen cup? I have a GSI Kettlist kit, but like the canteen cup for quick brew ups. And the best I've found for that is any stove with 4 pot supports. Or an alcohol stove made from a large beer can. Then there's the Esbit type, but not with Esbit fuel. Alcohol in a bev can cut to about 1.5 inches works fine. And then there's the U.S. type cup stove/ stand, which works with anything. Literally anything. Rake 3 or 4 coals out of a fire, set the rig over it, and 8 to 10 minutes later, you're done.

The most interesting comparison in my opinion it's how well they fry things on low heat in a larger pan. An extra 30 seconds boil time or one gram less fuel it's pretty much irrelevant but if it can't fry things your only choices are freeze-dried meals or to boil your food. Both of those options have dedicated systems that work extremely well, especially in the wind. So I'm hoping for a similar future comparison but for frying, and with pans of different sizes and thicknesses.

After seeing this review, my understanding is that stove are either either better at boiling or frying. Those with a larger surface don’t perform as well for boiling since they probably spare the heat on a larger area. Makes sense.

@@slowedonly I wouldn't bring two, but Depending on the kind of hike, I believe I would choose my stove depending on whether I would like to fry and cook or just boil. An extra pot with a lid for the frying setup frying would be taking care of, while otherwise just hassle free boiling at low weight is my other option when i don't need frying.

I'm still using the original Snowpeak titanium after a couple of decades, lighter without piezoelectric and I start it scraping a rod. I would like to use it in 'remote canister ' style inside a titanium wood stove.

Having owned approximately 40 "camping" stoves over the past 50 years, the Snow Peak GigaPower Titanium stove is the best canister stove I've ever used. It really is a shame that Snow Peak had to screw everything up royally and now you can no longer purchase it, at least in the US. I made a long comment on the GigaPower Ti in this thread.

I can't remember if you've done one of these about the ultimate debris stove yet. I don't think so but I could be wrong. I'm pondering which to get, but I know while you've reviewed some there are some I'm considering I'm pretty sure you haven't reviewed. Though I already have the Titanium Mini Firebox stove I have never gotten around to using it. I should probably just settle for that and send money since from what I know and have seen on youtube firebox is a topnotch stove I stillget the buying urge when I see some of the other options reviewed.

Ernie - 4 days late with the video man!!!!!! jk Just had my imitation stove from China fail on me last week so was looking to replace it with something serious. Would have loved to have this comparison video as many of these were on my long list and some were on my shortlist and I was searching yours and other videos to list pros and cons for myself in what to buy. I ended up with the Pocket 2 and am not displeased at all. But looking at the Soto and Primus stoves (which I had considered) perform side by side in this video (not only speed and gas amount but the burner size/flame pattern, stove size, weight, etc,)there may have been a couple other contenders. Anyway THANKS for taking the time, effort, and investment to keep all who choose to be informed by watching you - informed. Cheers.

Ken I think you hit on a point that a lot of people don't consider when buying a stove, and that's durability. It's a big let down to hike to a campsite, set up and anticipating a warm meal, find that your stove won't work. The old adage about you get what you pay for.

IMO, anything without a piezo would not make the grade. Also, consider doing a fan test for these. Which ones can you use in the wind?

Great work there. Pl don’t mind but the size dimensions aren’t registered in the mind and could’ve been replaced by a comparison chart.

Great comparison but I would like to see a comparison of stoves for simmering a soup or stew for 20 - 30 minutes in a stainless steel Billy pot. I have had a pocket rocket for about 20 years And it still boils water quickly but I have difficulty getting the heat low enough to simmer foods without scorching.

I would also like to see such a comparison. I just bought the Soto Windmaster but it would be nice to know if something like the Primus Classic Backpacking Stove is better for simmering, because auf the wider burner head.

@@MikeAchtelik I'm thinking it probably would be, as the flame will cover more of the bottom of the pot and hopefully create a more even heat distribution.

Late to reply but the Primus classic is in my bush pot kit for just that reason. It simmers and has great fuel control for low heat needs like baking and omelets.

Any of these not use a O-ring to seal? I use my stove multiple times a day and I go thru a lot of O-rings. BTW one of my stoves is the primus. Tnx.

are you sure the snowpeak is wind resistant? I read a test where they looked at performance in wind and it was by faaar the worst in said test (against soto amicus, windmaster, pocket rocket 2 and some others)

Soto Amicus is my favourite and Winner of Quality, Performance, Price and Size. I love it, it makes all my other stoves redundant.

@@seankirk333 wasn’t sure between the amicus or the wind master. Have friends that have either that swear by both 🤣 got a feeling I can’t go wrong with either

I have read other reviews that have said that occasionally the piezo lighter can fail, so the amicus could be a better option long term.
