We know it as the B2, but its full name is the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit. It’s one of the most powerful aircraft that any country’s military defense has, but what makes it any different from any other aircraft?
Its role is to be a stealth bomber, so it should come as no surprise that stealth is its number one priority. But how can an aircraft that travels at a top speed of up to Mach 0.95 - almost the speed of sound - stay hidden so well? Join us in this video as we explore the unrivaled power of the B2 Bomber.

I just love how you're showing different cockpits in every shot. At 2:08, you show a B52 cockpit At 2:32, you show an A330 cockpit At 5:52, you show a B1 cockpit At 5:58, you show a 747-100 cockpit At 6:29, you show a KC-135 cockpit You literally haven't showed a B2 cockpit in a video about the B2, and instead decided to display five completely unrelated cockpits. Edit: To all of you saying it's really hard to find photos of the cockpit, just search it up. There are loads of them. Even if he couldn't use them because of copyright, he could've at least said that they weren't from the B2 to prevent people from being misled.

On 23 February 2008, Spirit of Kansas, a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber of the United States Air Force, crashed on the runway moments after takeoff from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. The aircraft was destroyed, both crew members successfully ejected & the accident marked the first operational loss of a B2 bomber, and as of 2023 it remains the only. With an estimated loss of 1.4 billion USD, so there is only 20 in existence still.

That $737 million cost includes all of the development cost plus build costs divided by the number of aircraft (21). The actual "flyaway" cost was more like $250 million. The cost to build each additional aircraft. If they had built the planned 132 instead of just 21, the total cost including development of each would have been just $327 million. I actually worked on the the B-2 program and a part I designed is on each one.

I live an hour east from Whiteman AFB where all of the B2's are stationed. I was in boy scouts and one of the scout leaders used to be stationed there and we got to take a field trip to the base. Seeing this thing up close is something I'll never forget. Last year I saw one flying over Columbia, MO and you couldn't hear it until it was directly overhead and if you weren't looking up you would've never thought the sound was a plane.

I was driving west on I70 towards Kansas City very early one morning, with almost no other traffic, during the Kosovo war. Two B2s flying very low on either side of the highway came from behind (didn't notice/hear them coming) and blew by me, heading back to Whiteman I assume. Was a very surreal moment, especially considering they were likely returning from dropping bombs overseas. They were running bombing raids to Kosovo straight out of Whiteman at the time.

Let's be realistic...This aircraft is not silent and can be heard relatively close, very clearly like other jet aircraft. It isn't a roaring fighter jet by any means but it is still deafening up close. The purpose is stealth. Not stealth at 2,000 ft. for an airshow. Radar stealth / infra-red stealth at operational altitude. You'd be dead before it's sound was perceivable; meaning you wouldn't see it coming or going. Much less hear it.

Just to give an idea of how much firepower the B-2 has...in World War 2, the B-17 Flying Fortress had a payload of 2,200kg, or 4,400 pounds. The B-2 has a payload of over 40,000 pounds, almost 10x that of the B-17. Of course that was then and this is now, but still...incredibly destructive power. What a monster

1:04 - *radar* absorbant materials help reduce its *infrared* signature by absorbing radar beams - no, they don't. Radars use microwaves, and microwaves have nothing to do with infrared light whatsoever. 2:16 - a GPS antenna would make it more susceptible to being picked up by enemies - no, it would not. A GPS antenna works just like a radio: it only receives data from the satellites and does not send anything back. There is no way an enemy could detect that. UPD: someone in the comments pointed out, that GPS receiving antennas can actually make an aircraft more visible in the microwave spectrum, so the 2nd point is in fact correct!

1. "Microwaves have nothing to do with infrared light". Incorrect. Microwaves and Infrared light are the same thing. They're both forms of electromagnetic radiation. They're just different wavelengths. Both of which CAN be picked up by different instruments. 2. The antenna is not an issue in the sense of signals but in the sense that it would affect the radar cross section. There are specifically designed antennas for this purpose called "low observable antennas". You can look this up.

@@vladvladislav4335 I'd have to agree with Doctor here, both microwaves and infrared are just different wavelengths of radiation. In the end, they are electromagnetic waves which can be picked up by different radars. Most standard radars use microwaves, but other radars like IRST detect infrared signatures. Heres an analysis on RAM that also uses the term "electromagnetic waves" instead of differentiating between the waves as like Doctor said, different instruments pick up different waves. Hell, if they put some sort of nuclear engine in planes, they could use a radar to detect gamma rays.
@vladvladislav4335
@vladvladislav4335 2 жыл бұрын
@@prone1548 IR light has orders of magnitude shorter wavelengths, and these frequencies have completely different properties and need completely different equipment to receive/radiate. So no, IR light has nothing to do with RADARs. You can however use the same math and calculation logic used in RADAR systems, but employ IR lasers instead of microwave antennas. It's called LiDAR then. And there is a reason why it has a different name

Genuinely curious here, why does it cost so much per hour of flight? Does this take ordinance dropped, fuel used etc into account? or is this simply just man hours required to fully check the plane over for faults after the flight? Kinda new to planes and always wondered why having a plane like this has such a high hourly cost, when surely it should be built to withstand a few hours flying with no damage repetitively?

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but infrared and radar wavelengths are completely different. Infrared does not use "radar" to return a thermal signature. Nor does Radar use infrared for vice versa. A plane's thermal footprint can be reduced by the materials mentioned and the radar cross section might also be reduced in tandem, but the correlation is not causation. The materials reducing the thermal return might also just happen to have a lower radar cross section.
