The uncertain future of a historic LGBTQ+ safe space: New York City's People's Beach

The People's Beach has been a popular gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community since the 1940s, shaped by its beachgoers into more than just a spot to sunbathe and swim. It's a place of direct and indirect social activism, where queer joy is at the heart of the jumble of music, umbrella and bodies packed tightly along the shoreline each weekend.
But the land directly surrounding the beach is drastically and quickly changing. The recent demolition of an abandoned building, a $50 million building restoration plan and erosion threaten the future of this safe haven, some activists and beachgoers told ABC News.

I had the best times on that beach!!! Back then it was just referred to as 'The GAY BAY'! No fighting, no arguments and no hassles. People just wanted a place to be themselves and enjoy the beach!!! Hopefully the greed of others will not infringe onto that beach!!!!

Riis Beach has been queer space (predominantly, but everyone has access and choice) since at least when I was a pup in the 70s. No, people sadly can't just go to any beach without fear of harassment and violence. Sadly, gentrification tends to snatch away what little space working class folks of all colors and orientations have when it begins to look profitable to oust them/us. Same thing happened to the piers in the West Village.

*What’s the argument?* The community always pushes boundaries & want a structure there so we can “be ourselves?” We can’t just wear (or not wear) whatever we want & behave in a manner that’s unacceptable to society. We fight so much for inclusivity & acceptance, but fail to understand why we’re being ostracized. 2:30 “I think that continues today when there’s this hyper focus on how we’re loud, unruly & sexual.” U can’t say, “well I’ve seen people do worse elsewhere.” Yea, explain that to the ones that still see us being mentally ill/pervs. Nah, let’s just add more hatred fuel to the fire behaving prםmiscuiously.
