Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down the finale of The Undoing.
Turns out all along that it was Hugh...no not you...Hugh...no Hugh...sorry Johnathan and if that's all you've came to find out then congratulations, you don't have to hear me ramble on for 10 minutes.
However, there's also a lot to unpack and discuss about the ending as well as the hidden meaning and metaphors that are laced throughout the entry.
Ok so the Undoing followed Grace as she tried to unearth the truth about a murder plot that was centred around her husband Johnathan. After being accused of killing the woman he'd been having an affair with, Grace slowly started to unearth the truth about him throughout the series in this big whodunnit mystery.
The show has very much played with the idea of duality and the idea that if one has a good side they must in turn have an equal and opposite bad side which we've discussed throughout most of our videos.
Johnathan has been portrayed as the best of us, a child cancer doctor that would do whatever was necessary for his family but as discussed he is in fact a monster.
Now we pick up immediately after the reveal that the murder weapon was in Henry's violin case. Last week Henry admitted to covering for his father when it came to the affair with Elena and it seems like he's did the same thing when it came to her death.
The character discovered the murder weapon in outdoor fireplace when they were at the beach house but rather than tell his mother, he cleaned the weapon and covered for his dear old dad.
Now Grace has to grapple with what to do with this information and for several weeks we've discussed how she has been blinded by Johnathan, unable to see him for what he really was.
In the first episode she held a therapy session in which she discussed how her patient could not truly comprehend her husband for the man that he truly was and thus their relationship was in someway built on a lie.
This was the same with Grace but as she was a therapist she was able to see it in others and not herself. However, I think she can identify almost immediately in Henry that like her, he's blind to what Johnathan is truly like and this ability to diagnose the condition in others makes her realise that it exists within her and that she has to fight it.
Grace simply doesn't want her son to fall victim to Johnathan's manipulation and this almost Ah-ha moment and ability to identify problems in others makes her recognise her own failings and act in her family's best interests. She says she wants what's best for Henry and will do whatever is necessary to make sure that he gets this.
Now the breaking point for me comes when Johnathan tries to blame Henry for the murder rather than taking the blame himself. This incredibly callous move was of course echoed in the death of his sister in which he refused to take any responsibility for it even though he caused it.
He's used to throwing kids under the bus...literally...and he almost does the same with Henry who takes him back like Grace has so many times.

I’m devastated and deeply unsettled by the ending. The show brought up the complex intricacies of trust and betrayal. If all betrayal is self betrayal, then what is it to trust?

A plot point that was never resolved is why Jonathon told grace the night before the murder that he was going to a medical conference. Since there was no conference, where was he planning to be? This makes it seem like the murder was premeditated ie me knew he was going to be on the run. In the book he is apparently gone for months.

@@themasterMi7 i always suspect the worst twist at the end. They always do that these day. The most shocking way to end the series.kind of dissapointed with that. I Always suspects Henry (The Son). He seems to know something, he kind of smart and all. Add to that he might ended being sociopath thru his dad gene. And at the end Grace blame the wrong murderer instead her own son.. that's just my guess before..

The entire time I believed to my core that it was Grace! I think it was because NIcole Kidman played the character in such a stoic manner. She seemed to be emotionless and seemed unable to cry at their current circumstances. I think that twist would have been better...

I think people need to realize that this show is moreso a psychological-thriller, rather than a "who-dunnit" type of crime show. The answers where smack bang right in front of us from the get go. The issue was us as viewers were meant to question if Jonathon really did it. We're meant to be charmed by him and swayed by his narcissism. That was the whole point of this show.

I don't think we were meant to be swayed by Jonathan's charm because if that was the case the show executed it poorly. We simply followed the breadcrumbs that the showrunners sprinkled all over the place that were really all just red herrings. We questioned people's motives because we were lead in those directions and also because shows of this genre invite their audience to come up with theories. That's half the fun of it

@@larryromano7510 but that's one of the major themes... manipulation. We were all manipulated to think Jonathon may or may have not killed Elena. Why? Cause every time he was confronted he would always charm his way out of it. Remember this is from Grace's perspective. We're supposed to feel manipulated like she was. And not every show needs to have a major twist. Sometimes the only answer is right in front of us. I really don't know what you people wanted or expected tbh. Yall seem salty cause your theories didn't happen.

Still kinda irritating that the show tried as hard as it possibly could to make us think someone else did it. One red herring after another, pointing fingers at Fernando, Miguel, Grace and Henry while also subliminally planting seeds of possibility in Franklin and Sylvia...everyone got thrown into the mix even though all the evidence pointed at Jonathan. It's one thing to keep us guessing, it's another to be as ridiculous as this was.

However, it is also possible that another NPD character was had reason for murdering her.! Which is why readers and writers of psychological thrillers “wrote” alternative plot lines. I believe the best was the assumption that the killer was Sylvia. She and Jonathan held long gaze in scene of his arraignment, She was his lawyer in his work situation but didn’t tell Nicole , and fit the commandment that you don[t introduce a character like her who isn’t implicated in the story. This would have become obvious if the series had been written as a novel (different from source material novel). And lastly-the HUGH GRANT factor. I just read that he said that in the murder scene it was the first time he was playing the real Jonathan and therefore the most exciting to him. Otherwise he was playing “Hugh Grant” playing Hugh Grant of rom-com days.

One thing I wish the finale would’ve explored more was Elena, why was she so obsessed with Jonathan? Why did she have a painting of Grace, kiss her, and want to be involved with their family? Why did she seem so happy when she saw Jonathan but was crying in the bathroom during the fundraiser?

I feel like those questions were sort of answered. They led you to believe that she had mental health issues which could explain her “obsession” with Jonathan. She maybe started painting grace because she was becoming obsessed with their whole family and not just Jonathan. Maybe she was crying during the fundraiser because he won’t acknowledge her when grace is around. She was “happy” when he was with her because she was getting the attention she thought she needed.

I think when you’re in an affair you can be convinced that the wife is some sort of inhuman entity and I think she was shocked by her kindness that all the lies the person she was canoodling with weren’t true. The obsessions with Grace is because she seems to hold some sort magical pull because her husband won’t leave them and that’s mind boggling to a degree.

She set him up - real good. His Mother made it possible for Grace to know his true nature - no empathy. The smile on her face when she got back in the helicopter was terrific - she got him!!!

I thought Grant was in WAY over his head - the ending scenes with Henry, the boy acted circles around him. Kidman was okay in a generic role. Her best scene was her last scene on the witness stand - only because she’s had so much surgery she can’t express emotions any more.

I liked the ending. People always complain endings are predictable, I think this one was the least predicted because of our nature to suspect everything and theorize everything, and don’t want to believe the most likely case. Everything else was “muck”. We didn’t want to believe it was Jonathan.

And is the main theme of the story.. that it was who noone wanted to believe it was. Just like in real life. We don't want our idols to fall and we never accuse a prominent member of society. People who wanted to turn this series into a binge - watch have no idea that the writers did a magnificent job in actualizing a brilliant truth and crucial psychological and sociological aspects of our world into great art..

@@yvonneshanson1525 and wasn't tha is very idea discussed in the first episode where grace was telling her patient that we project our ideals onto our partners and never wanna see them in a bad light. That was literally the basis of the entire show. Grace not being sure if her hubby actually killed Elena. People are just salty cause they expect to have a twist etc.

Acting was very good. I enjoyed Donald Sutherland he is 85 and his acting was amazing.

The writers did a great job with their handling of Sylvia in particular. They made her a suspect by not drawing attention to her and by not overtly making her suspicious like some of the other characters. By giving her just enough screen time they were able to convince a lot of viewers who have seen enough murder mysteries to make us think she was involved. The fact that is was Jonathan the entire time- perfect. 👌

facepalm... yet another self-contradictory analysis... they made sylvia a "suspect" by "not drawing attention to her" - how is this not plain cognitive dissonance? sylvia was one of the completely underused characters - her one contribution in 6 episodes was to be the lawyer friend who could help grace execute her hamfisted plan to expose jonathan because oh she's a lady who could bump into the prosecutor lady in the toilet! honestly, anyone could've done that role and it wouldn't have made any difference. remember the school committee had like 6 or 7 members in ep1? nope, nobody remembers cos they were merely props - sylvia just happens to be a prop that had a purpose in the finale. think back on all the speculation that commenters had in previous eps: sylvia could've been the best friend who had an affair with jonathan, the "other" affair that was hinted at. sylvia could've had a motive to eliminate another mistress, possibly even hinting that she might kill grace in the future. sylvia could've been SO MUCH MORE - according to just fan theories in youtube comments! instead, she's nothing but a glorified courtroom prop... while leaving that "other affair" thread completely unresolved.

@@alveolate Yes commentators had that theory but the show itself never focused on those theories. It kind of just brushed past it, unlike some of the other red herrings. That's why so many people thought it was her.

@@alveolate no, the other affair thread was not unresolved, if you watch the show again, you 'll see that what Jonathan said about a "one off", which was met with scepticism even by Heily herself, just goes to show that he was a serial cheater and nothing more, as was later enhanced by Franklin' s confessions to Grace. He was a cheater but he didn't want to taint his image, so he understated the situation to his lawyer .. It was another clue to color his character and that' s exactly what the whole show was doing throughout : giving us steadily pieces of his personality and not clues about who dunnit, as a lot of you falsely assumed. And that 's what makes this series great imo. I think people will understand this more as time goes by...

Well I am glad that it wasn't Sylvia. I was pretty sure she's the one who did it, because of the "underuse" of her role. I felt immediately disappointed cause I thought I looked right through the shows last twist and found it so obvious. But then: BAM! The whole time we looked the murderer in the damn face. It really is a great show and deserves all the praise it receives!

Jonathan was such a liar and I think Grace began to realize it. She was very fortunate to have her father and her friend. I think without those characters Grace would've been destroyed trying to save Jonathan. I gasped a few times during the car scene with Jonathan and Henry. I thoroughly enjoyed this series. They did a good job with making me guess what would happen next.

For me, I knew it was him once his defense attorney, Fitzgerald, turned to him in court after Grace took the stand and said, “she [Grace] was in your camp and YOU lost her, because you didn’t get rid of the fucking hammer.” And he sat there and took it and didn’t retort claiming his innocence.

I feel like it was always clear that it was Jonathan, all the clues pointed him. The show was kind of from Grace's point of view and as the lawyer puts it Grace was telling herself that Jonathan didn't do it, but we see that Grace gets like sort of visions of the truth while earlier people assumed she was the one who did it and those visions are memories she's trying yo bury. But i guess it's the therapist vision she sees right through it, from the beginning she started suspecting Jonathan because in a way she always knew something was wrong.

I am guessing that singular POV would work much better in the book, the problem of spreading it over 6 hours is, it can’t be only her perspective, which exposes all the plot holes and illogic around his inescapable guilt. Told from her POV it’s a character story about loveblind denial. This version gives us an implausible mess filled with misdirection

There were scenes put in only to misdirect the audience like when the dad talks to the principle and intimidates him. Grace never saw that... whenever they show you something it should be relevant to the plot. Lots of scenes werent. I think that's my biggest dissapointment

@@irenev37 I'm talking about those out of focus kinda shots where she'd either go back to memories of Jonathan treating patients or where she'd see elena getting beat with the hammer or the sex scenes when she found out about his affair, she knew it happened and she was attaching Jonathan to it.

@@irenev37 the scenes were relevant to the plot, Franklin's meeting with the principle is part of his character development and also hints us for his dedication to his family, which is the reason that he plays, to the end, a paramount part in Grace's awakening. But even if there were red herrings, I don't understand why people are butthurt about it.. Most series i' ve seen do this and without the brilliant character development or acting this one had...

A great study in the exposure of someone with sociopathic narcissistic personality disorders. Dad in law wasn't fooled. The person who gives him the most benefit is the most important person in his life. Look how he promises his son a road trip for yonks but is so busy with his mistress he doesn't quite get around to it. . His greatest triumph is he even manages to fool his psychotherapist wife. In the book, Jonathan goes out of town a lot to multiple conferences for doctors...so often, in fact, that Grace, his wife, actually doesn’t even keep track of how many times ir where he’s gone. She thinks he’s a saint who puts in tons of hours to try and save sick children, and it rattles her world as she begins to realize the truth slowly. She almost has a breakdown but her friend Sylvia come around to help her and tells her...look you need to do this and that now. It’s very obvious to us readers that Jonathan is out with tons of lovers and is nowhere near a doctor’s conference.

@@kellyyork3898 Did the book discuss why Jonathan said he was going to a conference the weekend that he killed Elena and disappeared? I assume the murder was not premeditated and only happened because she came at him with the hammer? It just seemed like a strange coincidence that he was planning to be away and really disappeared, which initially made me think the murder was planned and it gave him the weekend to disappear for good, which obviously didn't happen in the show.

first i thought it was jonathan. then maybe mr.alves. then i was convinced that it was grace... basically throughout the whole show. then once i saw the hammer in henry's violin case, i thought maybe it could be him (my jaw was gaping). then finally i went back to thinking it was jonathan. i love the fact that i didn't believe it was jonathan because that would have been too obvious. brilliant.

This was an outstanding series! I was literally going through each episode with a fine toothed comb. Thinking Jonathan was too obvious I had Sylvia down as the killer. Many were disappointed that it was infact Jonathan for me that was a twist in itself. I adored how grace ruined it for him in court. Every one involved acted their socks off had me totally invested. I’m sad it’s over 🦋

It was undeniable when Johnathan’s mother revealed to Grace he was a sociopath. Grace knew it as well at that point and told her lawyer friend what to give to her old colleague the prosecutor to prosecute Grace with.

Great show, HBO got really another one. I love how I have been a clown for the entire show, believing that Jonathan didn't do it, and Hugh's INSANE acting (SPECIALLY the final part, MY GOD) helped even further to make people believe he is innocent. Outstanding performance by everyone, Nicole's acting is MIND-BLOWING, congrats to Susanne Bier, and directing/photography crew! 9/10!

I'm not disappointed, in fact I would be if there were been a shocking twist or revelation for tha sake of it. It's a simple story, a very basic crime story with solid narrative and with gripping characters that made it very effective, thank to a fantastic cast. Binging the series, it would have ruined the pace and the "magic", also it has been very fun to discuss, speculate as only with an old-fashioned drama you could do. I was hoping for more backstory about the Alves, especially Elena (it must be remembered that she gave birth to Johnathan's daughter!), in the end she deluded herself to be part of Grace's family, she truly believed I think, but it's ok. I think Grace's visions were her mind trying to reconcile with the truth about her husband that in the end take her to testify. She's a very sad and lonely character. She truly believed, having given birth to Johnathan's daughter, that she and Miguel could be part of the Fraser family, this explains her "stalking" of Grace, she wanted really know her It has been a nice, fun journey, kudos to HBO!

This series makes me think of the Amazon documentary “Ted Bundy : Falling for a Serial Killer” and the way Bundys ex girlfriend had a hard time seeing Bundy for the killer he was and accepting his guilt.

Loved your reviews of the series. I partly disagree with the duality part. I don't think the purpose was to tell that anyone with a good side must unavoidably have a bad side. It has to do with narrating the reality around NP Disorder - as was specifically defined in Grace's court testimony - which displays Dr Jekyl/Mr Hyde traits and a compulsive concern for the image of a person..this makes narcissists produce a "duality" which in turn imposes a "cognitive split" to their close ones- victims.. I think Grace finally terminates her cognitive ambiguity around Jonathan after talking to Miguel and seeing that he's not that keen anymore on maintaining the family unity.. that 's when she made her decision and called Sylvia the next morning..

The show is very good at showing you exactly how narcissists work. They can be so charming and gaslight you into believing that they couldn't possibly do wrong. That's what makes that ending so powerful because you actually experience that throughout the series.

Of course they probably felt guilty too but if a 14years old make such a big mistake and doesn’t even care for so many years you kinda need to acknowledge something is wrong with him after all. Specially when they said they support him and surrounded him with love. See how Henry was sorry and apologised to Grace for his mistakes.

Childhood should mean you are not "blamed" or "held responsible" for making a serious mistake because your psyche is not yet ready to deal with 100% of the fallout. Responsibility is a skill you teach to a child through parenting, it doesn't just come with the legal age. As a parent you might put too much responsibility on your child, leading to fatal accidents, but if your kid does not have guilt or grief that is scary. That means they cannot learn. Because they do not care.

One problem with the narrative is that Jonathan's condition is probably inherited, so either his mother or father likely has the same issue, and so they would not have been likely to have been discarded by Jonathan or to have told his wife the truth about Jonathan.

Just saw this. I suspected it was a setup, but as we don't know what Grace and her friend discussed on the morning walk, I didn't know where it was heading until the prosecutor started asking questions that made me think she had inside information on the defense's case.

Not so much a tale of good and bad, or a Jekyll and Hyde character, more an exploration of a narcissistic personality, which is present all the time, but merely hidden at times to conceal the character's real nature. The psychopathy is displayed when the character shows a lack of empathy and grandiosity - something which Hugh Grant is very adept at playing.

Interesting to note that when I first described my husband to a therapist I described him as a Jeckyl and Hyde type...turned out later I learned he was a narcissist. So to a person unfamiliar with how the dysfunction operates all the time, they appear as if 2 people/2 personalities.

It was only when he was clinically diagnosed as having a narcissistic personality that his behaviour made some sense to me. Narcissists can cause quite a bit of havoc in your life. I just put some distance between myself and him as it was getting a bit much to deal with.

Great season. Grace had to make that play im the park talking to her friend. Meeting the lawyer in the bathroom. If she didn't she would of had to tell the truth about the axe and her son would of went to jail. She played a nice chess move. Check mate grace. Perfectly written

This mini series was decent. But what's absolutely amazing about this show is that it's crafted in such a way that the audience experiences the same thoughts of, "it can't be him. No way" that the wife feels... Despite EVERY detail pointing *directly* to Johnathan. Kudos 🤯

Amazing show and analysis. Even though I said to myself that this can’t be another one of those big twist shows and that it would be better if it were straightforward with Jonathan being the killer, it had me guessing the entire time and that made it an A+ show.

Alternative ending..His son did it.Confessed to his dad in the car ,as he wanted the family to stay together.Hugh takes the rap for it and later the bastard child dies while the son is baby sitting.Eventually Nichole realizes her son is the narcissists but too late as Hugh is murdered in jail.

I was pinned to the chair watching the last episode.. haven't deleted off my PVR as I will need to watch again. All acting was SO good and am glad it was Hugh as the killer, any other "twist" would have been less gripping and a bit weird. I am reading the book as we speak!!!
