My wife wanted to do some XC riding with me last year so I picked up a really cheap and used up Giant for her to see if she liked it. I made it function properly and fitted it to her and after a summer on the hard tail with a coil fork it turned out she liked it so I got her a Polygon D7 but her experience with the Giant made her a better rider. Yesterday she hit two tricky switchbacks in a row and my 60 year old wife was giggling like a schoolgirl…she was proud of herself and I was proud of her…that being said, I love riding rail trails with my step through dad bike every bit as much as shredding with my Fuel EX…it’s all good!

Hardtails ain't comfortable but damn do they get you out and about. That's more important in this sport, just go out there and do it. Doesn't matter the destination, just ride it.

I'm glad you learned this lesson. I had a friend with a F/S bike that was an OK rider. I got him a rigid SS and in a couple of weeks he told me that bike taught him how to MTB. I took my rigid SS to North Table and more than one guy looked at me like I was nuts. I'm not concerned with speed, I just really want to enjoy the ride.

I spent a lot of time not having suspension in the 1990's, makes you appreciate it even more when you really need some plush, when people say that trails were not as gnarly or technical I remember being rattled to numbness on my rigid bikes. That was real gnar 😅

I upgraded my 19 year old giant iguana hard tail. We blazed country trails with joy! 26” wheels. 3x8 drive train. Roscoe 8 entered the stable: 29” 1x12 , drop post(I didn’t think was needed)😂 HYDRAULIC BRAKES! What? Yeah big changes. Roscoe eats the trail What a boss……. Then the trick of “u gotta have dual sus “. And the best. Yeah I felt the need. Didn’t have the $. I just frowned at Roscoe like it’s his fault and pounded my way thru the trails. Roscoe showed me hey dude I can handle anything you can, get u some! We’ve become close friends and I have a do it all. Trail, bike pack , chunk, Ride em till the wheels fall off! Thx Matty

Last summer I bought a rigid fat bike and put on some miles. There is so much you can do with no suspension. This winter I could a 29er hardtail because the long rides did wear me out but you can have so much fun on any bike. I really agree with the sentiment of this video

Makes sense, in the end it really is about being outside and having fun, breathe fresh air, enjoy the scenery and ride your bike. I have a Roscoe 9 personally and I don't see the need to upgrade anymore, I think I'll stick with this bike for years to come, until something breaks. I did think about going full suspension but not anymore really, mind you I am not a hardcore mountain biker, I just enjoy being out there, no matter what kind of trails or terrain.

man i bought a marlin 5 because i didn’t know if i’d really get into riding trails. Well 5 months later i had already cracked the frame and replaced some major components. I just upgraded to a Roscoe and im loving it.

I started mountain biking before even front suspension existed and now ride a trail hardtail (which I love) but the fact is, riding was always fun. It’s just easier to challenge yourself on a rigid bike making trails that might be a snooze on a full sus a totally different experience. With the rising cost of mountain bikes these days, simple bikes are a breath of fresh air.

My current 'mountain bike' is a Crust Wombat with friction shifting. No suspension, much slower down the trail, but sooo much fun and that's what it's all about for me.

The first full suspension frame to win an overall XC UCI championship. Prior to 2008 - EVERYONE won on hard tails. I have a 2010 Salsa Mamasita - their xc race frame with flexy carbon seat stays. It's a 3x9 XT; and I love the bike. It rides.

Best upgrade on my budget hard tail is the PNW Coast dropper. Adds some cushion in addition to being a dropper. Especially nice for someone who got on an mtb for the first time at 50 yrs old to ride with my son who had just gotten into biking. Really helped with the back soreness.

I got my first mountain bike while stationed in Germany, a Schwinn Impact Pro MOS Team Issue. I bought it to get around off post, which was mostly cobble stone streets. It was rigid frame, I soon discovered the versatility of mountain bikes....I sold it when I was sent to Fort Sherman Panama then stationed back stateside. After I got back stateside I discovered that Mountain biking was becoming very popular, but it would be a few yaers before I really got into it or bought another bike. I got out of the Army in '96 and was interested in XC racing, so I went to my LBS and picked up a '95 GT Karakoram rigid on sale as it was last years model. Loved that bike! But the popularity of suspension was growing and I thought it would give me an edge the next racing season, so the following year I bought a '96 GT Avalanche LE, again on sale, last years model. That bike, at the time was a dream to race on! I would warm up by riding the DH course before the race and fell in love with DH! So, I sold my truck, my Karakoram and my Avalanche and bought a New 1998 GT STS 1000 Thermoplastic DH bike at the then unheard of price of $3,999.00 + tax AND a $200.00 mid '80's Chrysler K car station wagon to get to race events! lol! I actually still have that bike in my stable with all my modern bikes. I ride it on occasion and when I do...everyone I run into on the trails wants to stop and talk and take pics of it. Anyway I'm rambling...Point is I've been thinking lately of going back to rigid and your video has got me shopping online already! Thank you! You now have a new subscriber!

I am so happy to see someone using this bike. I got mine about a month or so ago. We don’t have a lot of mountain bike trails near me since I’m by the ocean but we do have a lot of gravel trails and things they you cant really use a road bike or beach cruiser on. I wanted a mountain bike that had some versatility and would be durable with low maintenance so I went with the hot sauce and I am sooooo happy with it. I really hope to see more people using/reviewing this great bike.

I began watching you when you are just starting out during lockdowns, as I also was getting back into riding bikes again. I love that you are at the level now that you appreciate the really basic hard tail now compared to the blingy full-sus. Its great to see your maturity as a rider on such a fast pace.

I had a budget to buy mountain bikes or I would be spending too much. My budget used to be about $300 back in the nineties. My budget right now if I were too buy a MTB would be maybe $1200 for a regular bike except I don't need one I got a whole storage unit in the basement full of old bikes. And that $1200 budget is for a Surly Fatbike if I needed another. The one I have right now is for winter ice riding with studded tires and a rear rack with a front square rack that is the perfect size to put a pizza on with cords.

I’m working on getting a shorter travel FS because my lower back seems unhappy when I ride. I’ve hit the gym a lot to try to strengthen my back and that’s helped some but not enough. Otherwise I like my single speed hard tail.

I ride very infrequently now, but I started with a Specialized Hard Rock Sport in 1991 that was 4130 chromoly with steel forks and I rode that thing all over NYC and Yonkers w/o a thought or concern.

Like your music and how you transition the styles. Very effective communication that makes it interesting to listen all the way through.

Fully agree with that statement "Everything is kinda the same" I've been telling my Riding buddies for a few years, they now realise what I mean 👍🏾

Also, riding the rigid bike will def make you have better low speed handling and pick the best lines, which should make you faster on the other bikes.

Rigid Gravel bike checks these boxes for lots of folks. Go anywhere. Fun under biking on trails. Dirt, gravel, pavement. Do it all -- Gravel or Hardtail XC w/gravel tires. That said, one of these days I'd love to snag a used/discounted Sauce/Hot Sauce as a simple reliable loaner and commuter backup.

#1 Walmart should start only selling rigid forks. #2 Gravel Bike simplicity and versatility are the best option for majority of riders getting out only few times a month that ride mainly XC and not sending it at the bike park.

I can DIG IT BROTHER, some folks seem to make it so Complicated for no reason at all. It's still just a Bike, so just have some fun with it.......🤝🏾🇺🇸💪🏾🫡 It's nothing like Riding a Bike Man, and for me at 55 years old and 20 plus Surgeries, 8 on my Back alone I just ride when I can. It is interesting you point out the simplicity of the lower end bikes. I tend to go to my lower cost and spec bike like Marlin than my higher end bikes.

Started MTB in the mid 1990s in my mid 30s. On a hardtail and evolved with the technology to FS, carbon etc. I still have my hardtail and ride it several times a month. Has great character and I've been modifying and improving it all these years. I do the same with all my bikes. Each gives their own unique feel to a ride. My favorite one is which ever one I happen to be riding at the time.

The simplicity and analog-ness of MTB or biking in general is probably the biggest reason I don't like ebikes or electronic components. They work well, sure. But it's just not the same.

I guess it boils down to how much money one wants to spend on bikes and how much space you have to keep them. Bikes are like fishing poles, RV's, and guns. As soon as you buy something, you will question your purchase. I bought my first hard tail in 2003, first full suspension in 2004, and lo and behold got a steel frame rigid around 2007. It never changes!

That rigid would be fun at the pump track and slick rock but on my gnar trails I always pull FS bikes out now.

I was about to pull the trigger on the Priority Hot Sauce just a few days ago to replace my Gen 2 Trek Marlin 8 that I bent the frame on, but it actually ended up being a lot cheaper to buy a deeply discounted Gen 2 Marlin 5 and swapping the parts over. In the interest of keeping it simple, however, I'm leaving the bombproof Suntour fork that comes with the Marlin 5. Since it's my around town errand bike and backup to my Roscoe 9, I wanted something I don't have to spend a lot of time maintaining. You may be wondering why I bought a whole bike instead of just the Marlin frame. It's because the Gen 2 Marlin frames are no longer in stock, and the Gen 3 frames have enough differences in terms of geometry that I wouldn't have been able to swap parts directly over without buying additional components and doing a bit of bodging. Besides, I got the Marlin 5 for only $50 more than it would have cost to buy a Gen 3 Marlin frame.

I've been subscribed to your channel for a short while...when i first subscribed, i got notifications for your new videos but lately i've had to find them myself. I still get notifications for bigger channels i'm subscribed to, but yours and a few other smaller channels have gone quiet as far as the notifications go.

I agree starting on a rigid bike is fun kinda is a tougher way to feel everything which when you get suspension you feeel unstoppable

I prefer hardtails, and 26" wheels. build from the frame up! i have a few full rigid MTBs with rim brakes!! Single speed Klunker's are challenging, but fun. I have some 80's n 90's MTBs, in my collection so much fun!! My 86 schwinn high sierra has some crazy gearing, 48x11 what insane mother is bombing that down the side of a mountain at full speed!!!

It's funny, but up until about 10-15 years ago, what you're riding there (except the belt drive and fancy transmission) was just what most bikes were. "Rear suspension" meant padded bike shorts. I do like front suspension, my hands start going numb from too much vibration on a longer ride, but I agree with you 100%. Air up the tires, and go ride!

I'm in a country where they still riding swinn beach cruisers pretty much so any bike is eye candy for people and being at a price point where I can upgrade it and still be under a 1000 bucks(plus 37.8 duty of new bikes) it works because my money is 2 to 1 to the US so a 1000 is 2000 in my Monopoly money...😂😂😂 I've always been a name brand kind of guy but Hey like I said don't care about the name as long as it can be trail capable.

You can't pay me enough to ride another full rigid bike, just ain't very fun though. I do love my hardtail, so fun. I try to keep my full squish set up then I set and forget it, just riding it.

Technically your arms and legs are your suspension now. I wouldn’t ride without at least a front suspension because I like doing the maintenance. It’s like meditation for me when I am cleaning and lubing my bikes or guns. For example, I lube each roller of my chain with a single drop and will never lube my chains like most people 😆

I would always recommend someone to go with a cheaper full suspension. Polygon siskiu is a great deal and cost just as much as most hardtails. You can get a siskiu t8 for the same price as a roscoe. Then your ahead of the game and have a more capable bike from the start. Not only more capable but most getting into mtb are older and the suspension really makes it easier on the body.

Simple is best.

Consider getting an inspired street trials bike It opens up an insane amount of opportunity but mostly it will make your skill progression skyrocket I would say they are even more versatile than the bike bike you have in this video even because they are comfortable on dirt jumps and way better for skatepark/pump track

...didn't Eminent go out of business? Just curious, as I was looking at them for awhile. I've shifted, been looking at the Priority 600 and 600x lately, for the type of riding I'm doing.
