For years, I've always heard that you can only do continuous grain around 3 corners of a box and that the fourth corner would never match. That's just the way it works, that the two ends of the board will never match grain when you bring them together. Until recently, that is...

To really set it off, grain match the interior liner pieces also. Nice work.

Thanks for sharing the awesome project with a clear simple demonstration. I'm going to try the technique to build some music boxes. On that note, I also appreciated that copyright free legally district Frank Zappa - Dirty Love background music.

Good video thanks . One tip , which you used but didn't mention , was to make the 4th box cut on the longest side . Helps keep the box rigid .

Good call! I also realized, and I usually do it, that I should've had the lid on the offcut side. For the same reason!

you made it look so easy but i couldn't get past the resawn without the board springing into a banana peel. need to start with a 2" board just to get 3/8.

Great minds think alike! I was doing this maybe 30 years ago. Rather than use a liner, I would rout a 3/4 inch groove on the inside, maybe 1/8 inch deep on a 1/4 inch thick wall, and put a lip piece, 3/8 inch high so it would sit proud when I lifted the lid off. I did secure the joints with bamboo skewer dowels. Dropped one once and the glue joints failed....

Howdy, Brother! Nicely done. If you don't mind, I'll steal a couple of your techniques. I recorded a couple box making videos for my brothers to enjoy. It's a little harder than it looks but lots of fun. I'm looking foward to watching your pen videos. Great stuff and Take care!

Beautiful. I would love to do this as well, but I don't have a band saw. I saw a Wood Whisperer video about this technique a few months back and started looking into resawing techniques on the table saw. It's possible, but you're really limited in the size of material you can use, which results in smaller boxes. But then, if one can perfect it well enough, you should be able to sell enough to afford a decent bandsaw. I really love making the smaller items. I've made a large, coffin-shaped bookcase for one daughter and a farmhouse-style end table for the other daughter so I'm confident that I could do furniture, but I just love the intimacy (if you want to call it that) of making smaller items. Seeing videos like this I tell myself, I know I can do that, I just gotta find a way with the tools I have right now. It looks like you have the Delta 36-725 table saw. I have the Ridgid R4512. If you could show this process being done on a table saw (and not a $3000 cabinet saw), that would be a very relatable topic for a lot of us beginners and intermediates. Granted, the box may be smaller than the one you made for this video, but you could show just how attainable a fine piece can be. That's what gets the excitement level up. We could watch Norm Abrams all day and dream, but this is what gets me excited about woodworking. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for the wonderful comment! You're right, it is the Delta saw. Before I got the bandsaw, I used to resaw on it all the time, up to 6" wide boards. Doing small passes and flipping it until I reach the center.

@@willowcreekwoodshop there are only a few videos on resawing with the table saw. Combining it with actually making something, like the box, would be super helpful.

I saw a video, but I can't find it now, of a guy that used a table saw to make the sides of the box from one piece. He didn't quite cut through the whole way. It was amazing.

I'd love to do this, but I can't seem to get my bandsaw set up right for resawing. No matter what I try, the blade walks on me.
@willowcreekwoodshop

Mine used to walk on me all the time too. If you haven't already, search for Alex Snodgrass's method of setting up the bandsaw and make sure you have a good sharp blade. I know you can get it, I've managed to do it on Wen saw!

@@willowcreekwoodshop Thanks for the reply. I will definitely look for that video. Didn't think as much about the blade as the setup. The blades are "new" but still in the packaging after 20 years. Got the saw and blades from a friend whose F.I.L. passed away.
