I agree too. It’s one of my favorites. I think he even could’ve use that as a side project because he did he did where go where music was going at that time. I record with one of the producers that played on that album and did that part of that album as well as toured with him so he is very close to home with me.

Reminds me of good times. I remember them coming on the radio as we were leaving my high school graduation, on the way to, what would, be an awesome party Then, that summer. Not having any responsibility. Waking up every day, going to the river, drinking with my friends, knowing I better enjoy those days while I had them. I knew it wouldn't last forever, so I enjoyed every day to the fullest. I miss those days.. but I'm glad that I grew up, instead of being the weird, old guy at the party

Saaame! I remember back in 2011 he played in a small venue near my town (in Italy), and his was selling his own mercy. We approached him and he was honestly so chill and friendly. He even gave us some free stuff!

I got to play San dimas with them at a show in Fresno, ca. Must have been around 2001. Kris was super nice as was the rest of the band. For three minutes I felt like a rock god. Thanks kris!

That certainly is disappointing, especially considering even at festivals I’ve seen them at they only play to a few hundred people so I’m not sure why a photo would be such a bad idea. Maybe the room was dark and he doesn’t like camera flashes? I dunno 😆

Prolly a bad day. I've met him a few times with the opposite reaction. The last show I went to (2018 I think?) there weren't that many people approaching him at the merch before the show (he was busier after) but he was nice enough to actually talk with me a while and even took a photo, with the only deal being I let him take the selfie on my phone haha

Ghost writer, and no. He's not a good songwriter. He wrote a couple coming-of-age songs as a young dude that appealed to adolescent angst. His time has long since passed.

@@mskcrc Kris is easily a better writer than some of the bands from the same time that got more successful. I think it has way more to do with them going in an emo direction, and emo bands largely fading in popularity over time. Meanwhile, pop punk had a huge resurgence, while emo/pop post-hardcore never quite did.

That’s rad! Sounds like you had a really cool history together. I also remember making friends with bands on my space, that was so cool because it was the first time we could properly communicate with them. I’m now friends with Mike from the Ataris Due to me making this video, and he was kind enough to do an interview. I also stay in touch with John. They are both really really really nice

Yeah the band hand no gas after that initial success, and labels usually don't drop a band after a successful album, but the label must have saw the ceiling for the band sooner than they did (the last rock band to make it big off a cover at that point was Alien Ant Farm, who had no chart gas after "Smooth Criminal"). Also, The Ataris were an average band who made a banger of an album, unfortunately So Long Astoria felt the strongest statement they were capable of, like were never capable of better than this. Something Corporate suffered a similar situation, but it's frontman wisely went solo

⁠@GrandZenothis is a year late, but at the time they’d just finished a big tour with new found glory. So I doubt that having bad management would be the case. Sure it def does have an effect, but if they, at the time, could still get on tours like that, then i can’t say management was a real issue. Also, I’m just going off what he said himself. He wanted to do small venues. Not my opinion. His words.

I mean pop punk is having a resurgence and the The Ataris were one of the best in the genre IMO. They seemed to be on the cusp of making it huge and then...nothing. i remember buying End Is Forever and Blue Skies on release day at my local cd shop. Met Kris back then and he was super nice. Met him years later and didnt seem the same. Not sure what happened

@@markshadows3667 The problem is that the genre had a major "moment" and then it faded into more of a niche for jaded suburbanites and mall crawlers. Being the best of the studded-belt emo-pop-punk era is like saying your tattoo is the best of the tramp stamps. And yeah, can you imagine believing that your band is on the cusp of stardom, and just a few years later, you're playing shitty clubs for pennies when some of your contemporaries went on to headline festivals? No wonder he's (allegedly) a prick.

I totally agree with this. I was TM for a band on tour with them in 2012. We were on tour with them for about 5 weeks. I was there the night he threw the drums. Band I was with played right before them. My relationship with Kris was great and he taught me a great deal. I was in the room with he and I and promoter where Kris should have and could have been a huge asshole because show got moved to small venue, not many ppl showed up and were promised a good amount of money that the promoter obviously didn't make. He made sure our band and other opener got paid and worked out agreement with young promoter and was great learning experience for the guy who was just starting out and was way over his head negotiating deals. Kris is professional and pleasant to fans, other bands and most he interacted with along the tour until someone doesn't hold up their end of the deal. At that point he needs to learn how to handle those times better. Kris might not be the best communicator in these cases. He is very different to the band mates. He is a perfectionist and demands himself and mates continue to strive for a perfect show. He expects to get better every night and definitely isn't just going through the motions. As a fan, I think that's pleasing to hear that he wants it to be his best performance every time he plays. The weirdest part of everything is there social interaction outside of the show. Kris always drove the bands van and they all had assigned seats. Might not seem like a big deal, but they hung a curtain between front and back seats like they were 1st class and 2nd class in a plane.. He also didn't sell any Ataris merchandise. He sold his main album and then sold Kris Roe art and photography.. I enjoyed watching this and reading comments. After the blowing up at drummer in Asbury Park NJ he played the last 3 nights by himself and he opened for band I was with to finish the tour out.

Keep in mind that Kris IS the Ataris. His first Album 'Anywhere But Here' was almost done by himself. He's even supporting 'Hoobastank' going by the Brand 'Kris Roe of the Ataris' on Oct 29. But yes, he's an awesome songwriter and singer. Love him since 1997.

I believe it was investment fraud or something - he ran a telemarketing scheme. They released an album in 2017 which isn’t bad, plus a demo album and an acoustic album in 2019
