Hellbrunn Palace and Fountains is a short bus ride from Salzburg Center. Built for daytime use in summer by Prince Archbishop Markus Sittidus, the rich and famous came for cool off, take excursions, and hunt. When I stopped to think that these world-famous Wasserspiele (fountains) have been operating or almost 400 years, it's hard not to marvel at the ingenuity and humor that went into their design.
Everything is powered by water hydraulics and visitors never know exactly where the spray will come from; overhead, below feet or even out of a deer's antlers! The absolute highlight is an enormous Baroque village scene with over 200 individual animated figures, set to music which is run by a water organ!
