This sounds insane but hear me out, island mentality is totally real and people love cultural superiority which is why I made this video about how island culture is superior

The Anglo-Japanese relationship started in the 19th century and Japan based their navy on the British. Japan and Britain had to stop being allies because the UK was scared that the USA wouldn't like their alliance so they dropped their alliance to create the four powers treaty later an alliance including the UK, USA, Japan and France
@ToastieBRRRN

I thought the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of the early 20th centaury was stopped due to pressure from other British dominions such as Australia and New Zealand etc. You're probably right about some pressure from the US as well. Another similarity to point out is they both had Russia as their common rival in the late 19th centaury. Hence the alliance.

Also, Britain was never gonna successfully invade and occupy France or the HRE/Germany/Spain due to the latter having a massive size and population advantage, meanwhile all those larger countries have the potential to invade/ally with one another to invade Britain should Britain sit back and not intervene - which means for the sake of it's own continued existence, it needed to look elsewhere for the ability to grow in power to keep up with the larger, more powerful nations; thus leading to colonialism. Same goes with Japan, only China was already semi-united, just rarely ever got it's shit together enough to start worrying about other countries. To put it another way, Islands have a natural moat to protect them from outsiders - but that's a moat without a drawbridge - which means the moment you settle anywhere outside of that moat, your own defence now works for your enemy since you'll have to transport every single soldier, weapon and bit of food via boat which massively increases the logistics issue and leaves them open for naval interception which multiplies the cost of war. Because of that, you need an overwhelming advantage over the people on the other side of the moat for taking that territory to not fuck you over in the long run.

japan and the uk are my two favourite nations so im glad you made this video i agree that the island mentality is very real. its something ive thought about for why islands and island nations are so well known despite their relatively smaller populations also the animations were a bit too much for me. i liked the extra data the editor threw in because it really helped aid what you were saying but besides that i feel like all the pics and zoom ins were unnecessary. they didnt really add anything of substance to your points. they were pretty distracting for me. also i prefer the usual way you do your videos where you just talk, no editing or very few editing. makes the video feel more laid back and enjoyable. ive been watching you for probably two years now. i really enjoy your laid back approach to these videos where you just open google maps and talk. i dont need these extra animations every 4 seconds to help me enjoy your videos these are just my own personal preferences. i hope this comes off constructively. thank you for another good video and on a topic i really personally like

I live on Kyushu, which is the 2nd largest Island of Japan and is significantly poorer than Honshu. While there is definitely a sort of Kyushu identity I never hear any animosity towards people from Tokyo. There's no independence movement and people very much see themselves as Japanese before they see themselves as Kyushuan. Although I think if you went down to Okinawa you might find a more distinct cultural identity since they were originally their own kingdom which got taken over by the Japanese.

One reason might be that many landlords of Japan were beaten down by the Americans after WWII, so the independency became weaker. I think this is also a reason for the over-populated Tokyo and the low birth rate. However, I see politicians are doing their jobs to improve self-governance in Japan. Things may change years later.

The jokey sarcastic comment ibx2cat makes about how Ireland is "better" than the UK is because they didn't do the bad things what we did (empire building). Rings hollow, when you look at the number of Irish regiments or generals which took part in conquest or subjection of other parts of the world. For example like Garnet Wolsey taking part in the Sepoy mutiny or 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards in Anglo-Egyptian war.

As a person from an island country (Dominican Republic), I've always thought about this phenomenon yet you're the only one who's put it into words. The Hispanic Caribbean (DR, Cuba, Puerto Rico) has always had a distinct culture from the rest of Latin America, and nowadays, it's these cultures that see the most cultural projection (just look at how big the bachata and reggaeton genres have gotten).

Interesting! Being German, I always thought Japan and Germany were very similar. 1. We fought together in WW2 (Guys, I know that‘s very bad and we are all very ashamed of it, but still it‘s fact…) 2. We are both very wealthy and prosporous nations despite our dark past (Germany is wealthier and economically stronger than the UK) 3. We both have the oldest population on earth. So with our similar older history (WW2) and more recent history (growing very fast economically despite being heavily damaged by the war) I find Germany and Japan to be very similar countries.
