He's the most scary killer but he's also a bit silly which is so wildly effective for making him likeable, at least to me. Like he isn't any less scary, in fact he's still probably the scariest killer, but he's just goofy enough that he's somehow both endearing and horrifying simultaneously

there’s a child-like demented innocence in his actions, like he’s smart enough to do the action, but dumb enough to not know he’s hurting someone. Think of the Pyro from Team Fortress 2; demented psychopath on the outside, but through his warped view on the world, literally thinks he’s creating sunshine and rainbows

With creatures like this I think the animators still stick too closely to real human movements. I feel like a creatures like this should move in the most efficient way possible without regard for the actual purpose of a body part. The pallet break is pretty good at this, but another example could be when it swings the axe the arm bends like a whip to get more force in, going against the limits of the elbow joint.

eh, that would just make it look goofy at that point. the creepiness comes from the uncanny valley and how he's supposed to look and be human but he's just not, but we don't know what else to call him. giving him a random super bendy arm instead of his joints popping anyway he wants wouldn't give it them same effect

It reminds me of that one episode of Supernatural featuring something called a Tulpa where thought and belief causes the monster to change and adapt based on what new lore was created about it from urban legends. Like the unknown is just the physical manifestation of a bunch of different ideas of what people came up with

It's walking speed and the distance it covers with a seemingly lumbering gait is horrifying. It really is like he hasn't fully uploaded to the reality he is currently in. He looks like what people look like when they walk on the moving walkway in airports.

At first I thought the UVX launcher emerging from Unknown's throat rather than its mouth was an odd choice, but I came to really appreciate it. The fact that its head cranes back and goes limp once the weird fleshy bit comes out but the Unknown can still see/track survivors perfectly well leans into the fact that the Unknown isn't what we see on the outside, but the unseen monster inside, piloting the body like a puppet. Its "face" serves no purpose other than to mess with its victims, and it reminds me of real decoys found in nature; like how a centipedes backmost segment resembles its head to trick its attackers, how some moth/butterfly species have large, predator-like eye pattern on their wings to scare off predators, or how there's a species of snake whose tail resembles a spider, which it uses that to lure hungry birds right into its grip

all of his cries for help are used to lure people in, like a skinwalker or something. the fact that he does it even in chase though gives me the sense that he’s mocking the survivors. if there was any killer to feel bad for, it wouldn’t be this guy lmao. still love him tho

The begging for help thing is an act. It drops the facade during it's mori and lobby animation, which reveals that it's actually a pretty evil and ancient monster that enjoys what it's doing.

I think its lore mentions a thing called “project apple pie” which was about unethical human mind control experimentation. I think The Unknown is possibly a victim of this, I think whatever it is was originally a human who got tested on for project apple pie and then ended up as this abomination. It explains the fact it looks sort of like a human and how it’s able to use tools like a fire axe.
