My parents had a St. Bernard dog years ago. She spent all day outside. Only came indoors for the night. And she loved crashing through sand, mud, water and snow. She got cleaned up a lot, but would look like a mess after a day outside. Husky's are outside dogs as well. :)

Huskies are cold weather dogs but they dont like drafts. Heat from a fireplace on one side and a draft of cool air on the other would be worse than sleeping in a snowbank for them. My husky would come inside until the kids went to bed then he would go outside to sleep. if it was windy, he wouldnt sleep in his doghouse, he'd bury himself in snow with only his nose sticking out.

The duck has an instinct to form a companion for life which is meant for another duck but for this duck, the dog is enough. This is why the duck only ever follows the dog, because that's what ducks do, they follow others whether they're companioned or not. This human interpretation of emotion is marketed by the news program, whether to make it more entertaining or to make it seem more of a legitimate and worthwhile story. The dog is just chill and doesn't mind the duck following as long as it doesn't get too much in the way.

The duck has that companion instinct, so it follows the dog. It's a human interpretation to assume that they love each other. I don't know, the duck might love the dog or can't help but due to instinct. But there's no evidence to suggest that the dog loves the duck. Also, not all ducks have that propensity to companion a dog like that, it's a unique duck that has that random behavioural trait. Apparently the duck died before the dog. The dog will live as long as it biologically can, and that is fine.
