This video is in memory of Marcus Brown, 1951-2020. Beloved vicar of Rodmell.
On Sunday 19th October 2019, Harvest Sunday, the bells of St Peter's in Rodmell rang for the first time in 60 years. This followed a number of days of work done by local ringers to allow the bells to be rung for the village, one last time, before they were restored. The bells were rung twice (up, ring, down) because 4 of the bells had no stays. These bells are very unique in that the tenor is not in tune with the others.
The bells were augmented in 1909 by Warner's at the request of the vicar of the time, Rev Hawksford. However these weren't a great success and were only pealed once and rung only a handful of times! They then fell silent... until now!

I am hoping to get along on Saturday afternoon to hear the rehung bells for the first time. I was brought up not far from Rodmell and it will be the first time I've ever heard church bells rung properly in the valley (as the church in Newhaven where I was brought up only has chimes)

The bells were rehung and retuned in 2021 by Blyth & Co so they are now fully ringable. This video was recorded in 2019 to ring the old bells, that had been unringable for over 50 years, for the final time so that the parish could have heard the old bells ringing before the work was undertaken. This followed weeks of work and patching of the ancient fittings to ensure the bells could be safely rung for 20 minutes or so.

@@Owentheringer2024_yt They were not officially ringable. Although it was physically possible to ring them, continued and regular ringing on the bells in the state they were in this video would not have been safe.
