Over 1 year to create - this video combines my first 5162 attempts to speedrun Super Mario Bros. I recorded 193 hours of attempts (and practice) on an original 1985 nintendo entertainment system - then I wrote a custom computer program to process those videos and combine them via machine learning and conventional image processing techniques.
Support via ko-fi: ko-fi.com/flibidydibidy
*HERE IS A LINK TO THE 'How it's made / Director's commentary': • The Unseen Side of Spe...
My final time was 4:58.941 That puts me in the top 150 on the leaderboard: www.speedrun.com/smb1 but hey maybe a sequel once I learn how to do 8-4 better and pull off the ol' bullet bill glitch :-).
I originally thought this wouldn't be that bad of a project: cool idea, couple months, done. But this challenged me in tremendous ways. It's done now, and it's cool to watch 193 hours of struggling (plus many, many times that developing, debugging, editing, and processing the videos) in just 5 minutes.
But this was not easy to do. For instance; when you have 41 million frames - even if something takes only one second - you're looking at well over a year of computer time alone. Most frames were processed in much less than a second, but some had to be done by hand to train the system and oh man I could go on forever on how it was made.
I've also have the idea to make this system work LIVE to combine multiple runners into a real race. Stick around if you're interested in that ;)

This is not "all attempts" for sure. Many times we see only 1 or 2 deaths on a very difficult obstacle even though you show plenty of deaths/imprecisions on easy parts. Also, especially at the beginning, you show many runs that are several seconds late which you continued without resetting. I've never seen any speedrunner continue a run when they're already 3 seconds late after 10 seconds of gameplay. It's understandable that removing (and adding) some runs will save processing time (make a nicer final video to watch), but then you should mention it somewhere. Anyway, great work and nice result ! :)

@wrestlerx8494
@wrestlerx8494 Жыл бұрын
@@JustsomeSteve supposedly the framerules have something to do with when you press start on the start screen which could determine where enemies appear in a frame because enemies are on a timer that restarts every frame cycle. I.E. if you press start at the beginning of a frame cycle, then enemies will probably appear slightly sooner when you enter a frame than they would if you press start a or near the end of a frame cycle. I assume you think that is happening here because enemies are showing at different points on the screen, but that is probably just because the Marios themselves are at different points on the screen, so the enemies are not showing until whenever the Marios show.
@JustsomeSteve
@JustsomeSteve Жыл бұрын
@@wrestlerx8494 The "Framerule is just, that the game refreshes every 21 frames; that window is considered a frame rule. This means that when Mario reaches the end of a level, how quickly the next level loads will depend on where he is in the frame rule; a player who reaches the end on frame 3 and a player who reaches the end on frame 19 will both be on the same frame rule. Thus Mario's will walk together, at the end of the level, on every Framerule (every 21 frames) into the next level. I just think it's a great visualization of that Framerule. :)
@wrestlerx8494
@wrestlerx8494 Жыл бұрын
@@JustsomeSteve ok. Because there is a glitch in this game with a Bullet Bill that I think appears in level 8-2 and for that players supposedly wait on the start screen at the beginning of the game until a certain point to press start which is apparently needed to set up that glitch later in the game. My guess was due to the enemies being on a timer based on the frame it's on when you press start, you have to press start on a certain frame to allow the Bullet Bill to appear underneath Mario at exactly the right time to do the glitch AND do it in the least amount of time.

Looks like he lost 1000x by missing the pipe on 1-1 and resetting, then gave up another 700 times before the flag (-1800). But going from 3300 lives to under 1000 (-2300) on 1-2 shows how dangerous that level is for a speed run! Next level brought him down to 137 survivors (-800). So after that 55 lives (-82) doesn't seem so bad. Finally we got 32 (-50) going into Bowser's Castle for a finale of 12 (-20). Naturally, he might have practiced these later levels so he'd be more successful when doing a speed run from the beginning.

I love how for 8-2, he's very consistent at it mostly throughout most of the level over the span of slightly over 5k+ attempts, which means that the framerules make consistent .35 second gaps for every cluster of marios, then slowly as the level goes on the clusters at the back slowly get closer and closer to becoming just one somewhat constant stream of marios with the clusters upfront staying distanced, as the failed 8-2 death&reset-cluster have been filtered out and they slowly go onto the flagpole to begin 8-3. Yeah, beautiful observations.

It's like the reverse of that that bit in the book version of Jurassic Park, where Ian Malcom asks for a graph of dinosaur sizes and when he sees a single normal bell curve knows something is up, because with the dinosaurs being made in batches, you'd expect to see an increasing slope of multiple bell curves overlaid on each other. When overlaying footage of several thousand runs, you'd expect a constant stream of Marios, but you can clearly see them arriving by the busload.

@@gamer966 SMB1 end levels based off of a system called frame rules. Basically the game only checks to see if you’ve completed the level every X amount of frames (I think it’s every 24 frames but I don’t exactly remember). Former world record holder Darbian has a good analogy of catching a bus. The bus arrives to take Mario to the next level every X amount of frames. Mario can make it to the bus stop at any point but he can only catch the bus every X frames. The frame rule difference is apparent around 2:23.

@@idlemindedmage6925 The flagpole glitch is not the same as discrete packages. Discrete packages is that only every few frames a level can be exited. idea: if you are able to pinpoint on each level map the point where a run dies you could create a quantitative heatmap of the most difficult points in the game. In other words, we could go from saying "1-1 is so difficult to do fast enough that only X% of runs go through" to be able to say that for specific points in the game. See the infamous Koopa jump in 1-2. That was a slaughter!

I totally get your point but I don't think a speed run would be a good indicator of how hard the game is. Because he's sacrificing basically all strategy to win in exchange for speed.
