The diamond necklace with pink, white and blue diamond pendant was superb. Simple and it said it all.

Visited the Yusupov Palace on the Moika when I was in St Petersburg many years ago. Splendid.

5:10 - there was a set of cards created with Kings, Queens and Jacks dressed in those old Russian outfits from that Yousupov's ball. They were constantly reprinted, even during Soviet times. We had them at home.

I thought that ball had been sponsored by the Emperor, held in 1903 at the Winter Palace. All guests were asked to come dressed as notables of old Muscovy, with the Emperor appearing as Tsar Mikhail Romanov. The 1903 ball I believe was the last grand entertainment presided over by the Imperial couple (other later famous soirees were hosted by the aristocracy, such as the Yusupovs)--Empress Alexandra was always uncomfortable with public ceremonies.

Prince Felix Yusupov was one of the assassins of Rasputin. Fascinating.

He wielded the knife in the assassinating party of the "Mad Monk" Rasputin. I believe the "reputed" knife used is still floating about in the relic circle, somewhere...

Queen Mary got the "lover's knot" crown along with the coronational tiaras from "fire sales", the fleeing Russian nobility/relatives...anyhoo she took the 19 upstanding pearls off and made them into a corresponding necklace. Princess Diana looked fantastic in it. :)

Gross how QUEEN Mary took advantage of the desperation of her Russian relatives who had lost their power and lives during the revolution !! Mary was famous for her cleptomnia and sticky fingers among the English nobility who hid the favorite treasurers when MARY CAME TO VISIT their homes!! She famously would comment on treasures she desired in the homes of nobility she visited until the host gave in and gave her what she wanted...

I had some awareness of the Yusupov family before encountering this interesting upload, but knew nothing specific of the fabulous jewelry in their possession. Princess Zinaida was incontestably one of the great ladies of the empire before its dissolution, and the family made a grand alliance by marriage into the imperial house. Of the jewels discussed here, I especially admired the superb Pelegrina pearl, so opulent yet elegant. I'm surprised no mention was made of Prince Felix's notorious role in the murder of Rasputin in 1916, on the eve of the 1917 Revolution, permanently alienating himself thereby from the good graces of the Emperor and Empress, whose favorite Rasputin had been.

I'm surprised no mention of the fact that Prince Felix Yusupov (6:05) was the assassin of Rasputin, the evil mystic monk who was part of the downfall of the Imperial family. A handsome elegant fellow he was widely known to be gay, something which is wife Irina didn't seem to be too bothered with. They remained married but had no children.

He was also a not-so-closeted gay. In fact, the entire circle of the purported assassins of Rasputin were from Yusopov's gay circle of friends. He was very out in St. Petersburg and he was a cross-dresser. He was quite the scandal.

Surely, even Prince and Princess Felix Yusupov in exile could have lived comfortably, albeit in relatively reduced circumstances, by selling only one or two of the gems available to them, in France or via auction houses in Britain or the USA? Why did they sell so many, rather than passing them on to their daughter?

For decades after the Russian revolution the market for jewelry in general and specifically diamonds was depressed, due in large part to a glut caused by displaced aristocracy flooding the market for ready cash.

His assassins used Prince Felix's wife, the Princess Irina Alexandrovna, as bait for Rasputin, promising to introduce her to him at the Yusupov residence while they conspired to murder him that same evening.

Да, это так. Только это было очень давно, еще даже до династии Романовых. Да, Юсуповы очень древний род. А почему они перестали быта мусульманами и обратились в православную веру.. это забавная и курьезная история. Почитайте 😅
