The hardest Puzzle ever created had a million pound prize the creator never expected anyone to claim. It was called the Eternity puzzle, because it might take an eternity to solve.

I had this puzzle as a kid, and I wrote a computer program to try and solve it. After it had run for a few hours, I estimated that my program would take about 300 years to complete (only then would I know if it had a bug) My estimate was only a rough guess based on how far the program had got. If this video is right, then my estimate was wrong (of course with many solutions to stumble over, it could take a day or many years to solve) Needless to say, I stopped the program running. One thing that the video didn't mention is that to stop anyone claiming the prize too soon (and so stopping sales of the puzzle) anyone solving the puzzle had to send their solution to an address, BUT no winner would be announced in the first year of sales. This means that when they solved the puzzle (assuming that it was in the first year) they would still have to wait until the end of the year to find out if they were first (as there was no prize for second place!)

Lord Monckton: I've made a puzzle that is completely unsolvable, not even mathematicians and programmers could figure this out! Mathematicians and programmers: Bet.

Great video! The story behind Eternity II is also fascinating. After the original Eternity puzzle was cracked, Christopher, realising his own mathematical limits, actually enlisted Alex and Oliver to design the even more complex 256-piece Eternity II. This edge-matching behemoth had a more refined mathematical model for analysing its difficulty, and the number of edge types was meticulously optimised to make it virtually unsolvable by human or machine alike. Eternity II puzzle has remained unsolved.

1:59 to be fair, for the average person, even if the puzzle is easier, since it'd be more tedious, it's might still take more time.

Great video! A sequel could cover the really unsolvable puzzle Eternity II which was also designed by Lord Monckton and the mathematicians who solved the first Eternity puzzle. The word Eternity in the title might help to get more views. Subscribed!

Kinda random but I think I see Everdell in the background, I’ve really been enjoying that and have been buying the expansions. Are there any other great strategy games you’d recommend? I’ve decided I mainly like competitive as playing against real people is more engaging, I don’t like games like Spirit Island where everyone is facing the games enemy, I find it hard to stay focused (I have ADHD). Also like others have said, props to your production quality, I hope your channel goes well :)

Lord Monckton should've purchased an insurance policy in case someone would solve it. It would've been expensive, but clearly worth it.

I remember a board game that offered $10,000 to anybody who found a play position where no player had a viable move. It might be around somewhere...my mom just died and we're paying my sister to go through everything and make the appropriate keep/toss/sell decisions. I'll ask, you might get a kick out of it.

If they sold 500,000 copies, as long as they made at least $2 profit from each, couldn't they use that to pay for the prize?

After recording, I learned the part about selling his house was probably just a PR stunt. They made plenty of money to pay the prize I'm sure.

My thought or question now (and at the time) was how/who manufactured it? Obviously couldn't have been made like a jigsaw puzzle (ie made in one piece and cut up). So must have been made in the distinct pieces (to reasonable tight tolerances). And did he do all the necessary design and manufacturing instructions and testing himself and/or were others involved who could have potential leaked the details or had details intercepted/stolen?

@@cardboardmountain I think you could take some inspiration from the likes of Vox and similar creators with how they change scenes and camera angles of them talking to tell the story in a more watchable manner. That being said, the quality of the video was still pretty great! I'm sure you'll find success if you keep pushing yourself to make even better content.

1:07 "comprised of" --> "comprising". "Comprised of" is not a proper phrase. "Comprising" is correct, meaning "made up of". When people say "comprised of," they really mean "composed of." "Comprise" is one of those words that shouldn't exist, because almost nobody knows how to use it correctly.
