When the father was upset with the police using runaway instead of missing... his voice carried so much anger and hurt. My heart.

The fact that someone would prank call them during such a crisis and giving the parents false hope is so cruel, giving false hope like that and seeing the parents cry just breaks me

The most disgusting thing about this case is that someone in this world knows exactly what happened.

the last part where the father was accused of burying his own child was absurd. That psychologist should have been sued for moral and physical damage. This is so heart breaking.

I can feel their pain. My oldest brother was 13 when he went missing. My other brother was 12 and I was 6. We were playing out front. He moved me and my brother to the back but didn’t say why. He went back out front to grab our toys and didn’t return. Our parents came home from work and we told them he was gone. We called up our neighbors to help look for him. We searched until dark hit and that’s when we reported him as missing. But the police told us we had to wait 2 days to report him as missing. Two, argue infested days. Our parents blamed us, themselves and our neighbors. We finally were able to report it, but they shrugged it off as he ran away. Four months later two hikers were hiking in the Rocky Mountains when they found the body of a 13 year old boy. I can still remember his face. And everything. I can’t imagine finding my brother 11 years later. We were lucky that we were able to identify his body and give him a proper burial with what was left. It’s the most hush thing to talk about in our family. It tore us all apart. My grandparents blamed me and my brother and my parents. There was a huge divide within the family and it hit so deep, that we pushed it all under the rug. There are no words to describe what it’s like to lose a sibling (or child) in such a brutal way. I hope all these boys and my brother are resting peacefully and are still playing together up wherever they are

The police are always portrayed as heroes but in reality, I hear more stories about their incompetence than about how they actually protect civilians.

Their parents tried everything to find them. They did more than the police did. Where was the empathy from the officials? Didn't they have children? How sad.

How can you as police not take it serious when 5 boys from 5 different families dont turn up at home and they didnt turn up at taekwondo practice and they're underage? All those 5 families came to the police station to report them missing and you dont do anything?

The fact that the boys went missing in March and the police started searching in October is unbelievable! Also, what the military did was very strange and doubtful...Rest in Peace innocent boys 🤲🏽

Here is my theory (based on the limited amount of information I’ve gathered): On a holiday, no school day-when everyone was distracted by the election, 6 boys were playing boisterously in their neighborhood. A neighbor complained of the noise so they decided to move toward a wooded area. The 6th boy was hungry so instead of joining the others, he went home. (I really wish we could have gotten his interview!) The remaining 5 went on, but not before one of them stopped by his house to get a heavier jacket-the last time his father would see him. The boys were playing in the woods and got nearer and nearer to the adjacent military base. They found shell casings and bullets on the ground. Intrigued, they started collecting them, putting them in their pockets (explaining why bullets and casings were found in their clothing). Perhaps they saw the signs that indicated it was a military shooting zone. They disregarded them, maybe because they were goofing around or maybe because they thought it would be safe during the holiday. Meanwhile, there was a higher ranking military person who came on base to practice shooting that day. At some point it was said the military actually had record of who this person was, but his name had never been released and he had never been questioned. He had to be a higher-up because only certain officers were allowed to use the shooting range during non-drills. Most officers were off that day because of the holiday, so there probably were not many people there that day. The officer was shooting. Perhaps he mistook the children for animals from the distance or perhaps it was a random, accidental shot that hit one of the kids. (Only one boy had bullet holes in his skull.) At that point the officer may have realized he’d made a mistake so he went down to the area to check it out. When he gets there, he finds 4 boys freaking out, screaming for help, and trying to carry their injured friend down the mountain toward home. The boys may have thought the officer had come to help them. He maybe even did consider helping them at first, but then, perhaps after realizing the magnitude of the situation and fearing the loss of everything for his mistake, the officer lost his mind, flew into a rage and started bludgeoning the boys over the head with whatever tool he had. (The back of a hammer? A shovel or rake? His gun? I don’t know, but the forensic experts concluded it was a tool related to the perpetrator’s “occupation”.) As the boys began trying to escape , he grabbed some of them by their clothes and in the struggle, pulled them up over their heads. Once he had knocked them all out, he dug the hole and then tied their sleeves together to make it easier to drag their bodies into the pit. He buried them and then left. The “accidental shooting” theory is probably one of the most common, but I do have my questions. It would have taken the shooter a while to get down to where the boys were. Why didn’t one of them run home to get help? (Maybe the kids just tried to stick together and help their friend?) Also, the bashing in of their skulls required rage and passion. Why wouldn’t the perpetrator just shoot them quickly and cleanly? I wonder if maybe the boys saw something they weren’t supposed to see and the perpetrator attacked them. Also, one shot and one scream were reportedly heard near the area. This is odd. Wouldn’t the people there be used to shots all the time because of the military shooting range? Why would only one shot have been fired if someone was practicing shooting? And one scream? I’m sure there must have been many screams! Such a sad case! So many mistakes and coverups (and possibly bribes to the police from the military). Because of the publicity, so many crazy people calling in to try to profit or to make a joke-which is truly appalling! Back at that time in Korea, it’s not surprising that it was so botched. If this had happened today, I don’t believe the perpetrator would have gotten away with it. The boys would have been found within a few days, not 11 years later! There is someone out there who knows exactly what happened!

It's horrifying that their bodies were found eleven years later and the police said that the cause of death was cold weather where they were clearly murdered.

How could you make a joke about this and prank call them. That’s so heartless

I vividly remember this growing up in South Korea. It was scary as heck. 30+ years pass and its still not solved. This is crazy.

Incompetent south korean policemen. 7 months passed, before they investigated the case, I am speechless. The psychologist only wanted to be famous, he acted as psychic not a psychologist. That is not what a psychologist do.

Director Bong Joon Ho should make a movie about this, just like his movie Memories of Murder, and make sure that the movie will show the negative side of the military, police, media, and the government regarding the handling of this case

Makes me sick knowing there are people out there hurting children just for fun.

The parents went through a lot.... And they deserve to know the truth... May their kids rest in peace and may justice be eventually served..... Everything seems to be inevitably leading towards a military cover up for an accidental shooting... Or maybe seeing something that should've been kept away from the public... That encounter in the military base was weird as hell..

It breaks my heart seeing their fathers cry, because they were supposed to be the source of strength for the whole family. No family deserves this! I wish nothing more but peace for the family. To the boys, Woo Cheol-won, Jo Ho-yeon, Kim Young-gyu, Park Chan-in and Kim Jong-sik, I wish all of you peace and justice. You all deserve better.

I remember my parents telling me about this when I was little and watching a Korean documentary on this when I was younger. I didn't know the extent of it. The kids are at peace knowing that their parents and loved ones tried their hardest to find them. I know it. Rest in peace to these poor souls. May their parents soon find peace as well. Their kids will be waiting for them.

How could a parent kill his own child and still desperately look for him and even quitting his job

The kids were murdered and this is absolutely devastating. Assuming from the fact that only ONE kid had a bullet hole in his brain, he had the possibility of being the one to escape. He had the possibility of being the one to tell the story and help his friends’ deaths not go in vain. He got shot at before he could make it. He was shot with a shotgun, which are hard to obtain. Witnesses beside the hill heard two screams, 10 seconds apart, around 11:30 am. A witness’ mother had a gut sinking feeling around 11:30 am as well. These kids had no reason to run away (Korean Police assumption). They were ages 9 through 13 and had happy lives with happy families. No bullying ever took place. They did not die of hypothermia, as confirmed by the autopsy. Police searched and could not find the bodies, guessing the murderer dumped their bodies there after the police searched so (s)he wouldn’t get caught, as the bodies were found in such an obvious place. It was out in the open, near the shooting range. These children deserve justice and I feel terrible

these are truly heroic parents, and what they suffered is about the worst thing a human being can experience. As hard as this was to watch it was also strangely inspiring to see these fathers pull together the way they did, even though the kids are all still missing.

I couldn't even watch the whole thing. I was so angry when they said children were runaways and not missing even after the phone call. Then 7 months later they do a field search. I couldn't handle this! Those poor boys! May they come back in another life as very successful men who can make changes in the world!

South Korea seems only competent and very good in terms of economics . This reminds me of those so many children died when their ship sunk. They had the chance to save them but they were too slow. They were not prepared with those kind of emergencies.

The minute I heard that bit about there being an army base nearby my spine got a chill down it. When they went on to talk about how the forest was near the shooting range, my gut got this terrible feeling. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turns out to be someone in the army who did it, perhaps accidentally, and hid the bodies. My heart breaks for these parents- shame on the police and media for not caring until it was too late. The first 72 hours are so important, wtf is the use in seriously investigating months later? It makes me so cross.

I went to go look at the case and there was a surviving boy, a sixth one, that went home to eat and said he would join them later. This saved his life. He is the reason why I can't believe that the boys "just ran away". If there was a plan to run away, wouldn't you think he would've known about it considering him needing/wanting to go eat first is an entirely random event? There was a rumor that they got too cold and huddled together for warmth, but apparently, the town could still be seen (at night because of the lights) from the spot that the bodies were found, so there wasn't any reason for them to huddle for warmth. 3 of the skulls were discovered to be caved in! There were cracks and holes (!!!) to the skulls and were possibly caused by tools (such as screwdrivers). The caving in the of the skulls makes me think that the holes weren't caused by bullets (like some people suspect). If we knew what patterns the cracks made (radiating from the holes or in other places without holes/more spread out like if you cracked a hard-boiled eggshell), then we would know if it was blunt force trauma and stabbing or bullets. This is all I got with my limited knowledge.

Due to Korea's strict gun law policy it's either a policeman, a hunter or a soldier I lean towards the third theory. I think it is more than one soldier he/they shoot at one kid by accident and then they took care of the others to protect himself/themselves. There was a military range next to where the bodies were found and when the searches for the missing boys started they could join and secure the area where the boys were burried and act like there was nothing. If it was a serial killer he wouldve done it again. It is a military cover up.

A couple things I'm curious about: What the HELL was that short segment where the military invited them over to a tent and an officer pretended to give them supernatural powers, after which one of the wives went crazy and tried to lead them to a place where she thought the boys were? They just briefly went over that but I thought it was INCREDIBLY bizarre. Secondly - the initial call demanding ransom was never elaborated on. If the military was to blame - who was behind the call? Also, how were their bodies found 11 years later? Don't bodies decay? Was it just the bones that were found or did the bodies get preserved somehow because of cold weather?

South Korea needs to open a full investigation again in this case ASAP! With the current modern technology, I'm pretty sure they can get closer to solving or a better understanding of what happened, I'm pretty sure that evidence from the case that was found still kept all they have to do is reanalyzed. Touch DNA can solve this case, Touch DNA picks some skin cells on on clothing. there are a lot of cold cases in the United States that got solved because of this technology. if they still kept the items of clothing they could use Touch DNA on them to find a person.

Screw the authorities. I wish the boys families for them to finally find answers and be at peace now. They deserve that and may the boys rest in peace.

to be honest, the military CAN be the reason why. they also did say that they travel around Korea. if there is a kidnapper, they can bring the kids to Japan or china or even Russia. if they live in daegu, it is not hard to travel by sea. they cannot travel by plane because the kids don't have any passports with them.
