It's a very saddening example of modern network society: fans being fans, one wrote a fanfiction portraying both Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo as a minor male prostitute and his "lover" (got totally out of hand...). Some Xiao Zhan fans thought it was unbereable and massively signalled the fanfiction. It attracted the authorities eyes on the whole fanfiction platform, which was shutdown. Unfortunate for other BL lovers, because it was one of their main free place to read and write about BL and such stories (China being China). They got mad at Xiao Zhan for not leashing his righteous fans and it backfired on him, almost without him knowing anything of what was happening. Some people even told him to go and kill himself 🤬😭. His sponsors then refused to use the now controversial character, and all happened at the beginning of the covid crisis, when work was beginning to be difficult for artists. He's regaining popularity, but I'm feeling immensely sad for what he's been through, for "no reason" (at least nothing he's been directly involved into)... Dark times. Let's continue to show him (and his sponsors) that we love him, in China and abroad ❤.

It wasn't that they were shipping the actors together that was the reason for the scandal. It was because some fan wrote a fanfiction about Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan on Archive of Our Own website. They wrote that Xiao Zhan was an underage prostitute or something and Yibo was an adult (or vise versa I can't remember which one was which). So it was illegal or something because it involved a minor and an adult. As a result, many people took offense at the fiction (thinking that it sullied the reputations of Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo) and they reported the fiction to the Chinese government or authorities, wanting them to force the writer to take the fiction down. But instead China banned the site so people couldn't access it in China I think. That in turn made everyone blame Xiao Zhan for this since it was Xiao Zhan's fans who reported the fiction and caused all the trouble. As a result, people started to boycott Xiao Zhan's products, endorsements etc... and blamed him for the incident. They apparently were like, "It's your fault for this mess, Xiao Zhan. You should be able to control your fans better, since you're not able to control your fans, it's your fault." Which totally makes no sense. How can he know what his fans are doing?! Plus it was the fan's fault in the first place for making the fiction with such content and the fault of Xiao Zhan's fans for reporting it to China in the first place. It's not Xiao Zhan's fault at all. But he was made to apologize for the actions of his fans. But yeah, the incident had nothing to do with people shipping Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo together. Because of the incident, their companies decided to have them not meet in public anymore to stop the gossip from spreading though, which was a good idea. It let things die down and now I think finally they are getting together again on-screen. They told the public they are both going to be collaborating again in 2024 on screen.@@O_Arlo
