The Untold Origins of Black Jews in America

Black Jews have been a part of American history since before the colonial era, likely originating from Jews of Africa who were sold as slaves in the New World, and some slaves who converted to the Jewish faith of their slaveowners.
Jews of color stemming from Roman-African or Afro-Caribbean descent, of diverse lineage, or who convert to Judaism, continue to contribute to the rich and multi-faceted history of the Jewish people.
Many famous black Jews, such as Sammy Davis Jr., Charles Mc Dew, Daveed Diggs, Tiffany Haddish, Rashida Jones, Drake, Yitz Jordan (Y-Love), Shyne, Lenny Kravitz, Nissim Black, Eric Andre, and more have helped create awareness about this community.
Today, some of these Jews of Color have also come together in communities and organizations to bring them out of the margins and into the mainstream of American Jewry.
However, race relations and identity politics, especially surrounding Israel and Zionism, often complicate the identity of black Jews, forcing them feel that their race and culture are at odds with one another. Even whether or not the term "Jew of color" is positive or negative is sometimes up for debate.
Jews of all races and ethnic backgrounds must come together and unite as a people with a shared mission.

Judaism is an ethnoreligion, meaning you must be both ethnically Jewish (Ashkenazi, Sephardic, Mizrahi) and you must believe in the faith to be Jewish. I am a Christian Convert (I was originally Jewish)

I always thought the opposite. I was shocked to find out there were white Jewish people. As a child I always thought Jewish people were middle eastern or black African race because that’s the area Israel is in and in genesis and exodus it talks about them living in Africa in Egypt. When I grew up and found out there were all these white people saying they were Jewish I was shocked.

European Jews didn't start calling themselves Israelites until 1860. The word Jew was first placed in the 1804 edition of the KJ V bible and in every edition since! With the acceptance of the word and people as Isralites, the meaning applied to jew became, 'a person descended from the tribe of Yahudah', which of course is a deception.

Jews have similar religious practises as the Y'sralites did because in the late 8th Century the Euro/Asiati khazars converted to the religion of the Pharisees. They practise torah but from a perverted rabbinic form. For example they keep the biblical festivals inclusive of the Shabbat, but do so from the traditions of the elders! For Shabbat they start it on Friday evening contrary to the torah which says that Shabbat is governed by the sun. Does the sun shine at night? Clearly not! Is Shabbat about cessation from work in order to rest? Yes, it is not about sleeping at night, resting one's body, but ceasing from one's daily work. Perhaps the following may help clear the fog of confusion. "Strinctly speaking, it is incorrect to call an ancient Isralite a Jew or to call a contemporary Jew an Israelite or a Hebrew. The first Hebrews were not Jews at all" Jewish Almanac Oct 1980 Waitz says: "An interesting graduation of all shades down to black is exhibited by the Jews. Especially dark were the Jews of Portugal and Southern Spain, that many whites believe that all Jews were black or dark" JS Rogers - 'Nature knows no colour line' Page 153.

That's true. Western culture is too much racialsed. I am a North African jew, and we have people in Morroco from blond hair to very dark skin, with all the colors between, and we don't care about it. Human being is human being... Culture, education, knowledge are the most important things.

It is quite refreshing to find videos such as this one. I'm a Capeverdean Sephardic Jew; whenever I tell someone in the US I'm a Jew, they seem surprised. In my defense, I don't take it the wrong way, knowing most are ignorant of such a subject and lack general cultural skills, which is a great fault in our society.

I’m from Kenya and grew up as a Quaker in Canada. When I went to visit my family, I found out I had a nephew named Shalom and that he goes to a school that has a Synagogue, a Mosque, and a Church that share that same playground.

I had a dream about 6 yrs ago. I was speaking either Aramaic or Yiddish.. it was definitely from that region. When I woke up I couldn't speak a word of it! First and only time I dreamed of another language. Since then I had another dream of conversing with a black Jew. First name started with an "S". When I fasted in Buffalo about 8yrs ago the curses mentioned in Deuteronomy 28 fell on me like a ton of bricks and the connection between that and slavery with the possibility that blacks ARE Jewish and NOT just converts! Thanks 4 this! Know what's funny and proof that blacks could be Jews. Guess where I work now? AT A JEWISH COLLEGE! (I did not plan that. I just needed a job) Students there treat me with respect and are fantastic!

If you have your DNA tested with the right organization (I had mine done around 20 years ago by Howard University's genetic lab, because it was a tax deductible donation) you will most likely discover that you're Mizrahi (North African Jewish) as a larger population of Louisiana Black Creole's are from that population. Which is part of my family lineage. Hope that helps. BTW, Judaism is not just a religion, but a people and way of life, ijs.

@@moshe7019. If you do not read the Holy Scriptures you should not be spreading false tales regarding what or who is a Jew. A jew is a descendant of the tribe of Judah. Judah was one of Jacob’s twelve sons and Jacob is the son Isaac, the son of Abraham. Jacob’s name was later changed to Israel and his descendants are called Israelites. It is a bloodline, not a religion. However, The Most High God chose them as His people to who He gave the laws/commandments by which mankind should live. They are supposed to teach the gentiles these laws/commandments and therefore if the gentiles become believers and observe God’s laws, they will be grafted in among God’s chosen people but it will not make them bloodline Israelites.

Being Jewish is a RACE AND A FAITH. Anyone can be Jewish, if they have descendants or converted, or both. I am Jewish partly by race, I do not practice but actually considered Jewish by race since my Grandmother was Jewish and taught Hebrew. I asked a Rabbi if I was considered Jewish, he laughed , and told me I am by race. I love the faith, and the tree of life, it's a lifetime of continued studies and faithful commitment to become a practicing Jew. I take all aspects from ancient practices all over the world and am extremely spiritual, I actually walk the red road. Its truly amazing to keep learning . I study all healing practices from around the world. I love the fact that we never stop learning. There are common threads in all areas of healings. ❤

Deuteronomy 28 is of the tribe of Judah, thrown into captivity (the transatlantic slave trade) by ships. So the negro is Hebrew. The 1747 West/slave coast map shows the area was called kingdom of Judah

Not all black slaves were Hebrews, but many were. On the Transatlantic Slave Trade online records, you can see all the people with traditional Hebrew names(mostly Hebo and Igbo). Do not forget that warring tribes kidnapped and sold their enemies to the Europeans as slaves. They didn't exclusively kidnap Hebrews. They also kidnapped Muslims and Christians and Witchdoctors.

There are many many millions of humans all over the world with Israelite roots. The Jews of today are a very small surviving remnant of the Tribal nation of Israel. The way of LOSS of the Israelite identity for those who lost it, has been through assimilation to foreign religions. No disrespect seeing as you tried to break things down to help people understand but for me this was a very confusing explanation on something the Bible breaks down in simplicity. Read Revelations 2:9 & 3:9 & Deuteronomy 28:1-68 & Psalms 83. Allow the Bible to interpret the Truth and not man. There is a distinction between being Jewish/The State of Israel and being Biblical Hebrew/The Nation of Isreal.

I don't understand why it matters what color your skin is if you accept Hashem as your Lord and only Hashem, celebrate the Sabbath from Friday at Dusk to Saturday at Dusk. Go to Synagogue, have your son's circumcised by a Rabbi and Follow the Commandments and the Torah, your a Jew not all Jews are Caucasian and not all Jews are Black. @@amram1305 the original Hebrews were probably more of a middle eastern skin tone but being pushed out of our homeland we moved all across the World, people who lived in Warmer climates like Ethiopian, Middle Eastern and Ladino Jews kept the Melanin in their skin whereas Ashkenazi Jews in Eastern Europe living in colder climates lost the melanin in their skin which is the reason we have Jews of Many Colors today and Us Jews don't read the new testament we read the old testament which is actually the TORAH! So the color of Christ has no bearing on the color of today's practicing Jews. Our Judaism is actually in our genes when we marry we go through genetic testing to make sure we don't carry recessively certain genetic diseases that if we marry another Jew that carries that same recessive genetic disease could result in a horrible disease that would lead to the death of the children before the age of 4 or 5 yrs old. Judaica is not just a religion it's a beautiful culture, with traditions that go back over 5,700 years. Please don't take something so beautiful and trivialize it into skin tone bc truth of the matter is there are Asian Jews, African Jews, Middle Eastern Jews, Spanish Jews, Morroccan Jews, South American Jews and much more all with different skin tones but what binds us is our love for each other and our love for Hashem

There's a difference between Jew & Jewish. Ashkenazi are Jewish, individuals who practice Judaism are labeled Jewish but a blood descendant of the ancient Judeans, these are just Jews no matter what they practice. Drake, Lenny Kravitz, that lying gay fellow from Empire, these folks are Ashkenazi aka Jewish, not necessarily true blood descendants of ancient Israelites. I'm a descendant of the enslaved brought to America with DNA traced to the Igbo, Lemba, Bantu, true blood descendants of the ancient Hebrews, Israelites, Judeans. I am what they call Semitic (the mean a descendant of Shem so it should be Shematic, not Semitic but that's what those Ashkenazi do, alter words as they did Israel & made it Israeli). My grandfather believes that some of his Jewish descendants were actually American Indians. To determine whether one is a Jew is based on Halacha which doesn’t mention DNA. It’s whether your mother is Jewish or through formal conversion. He didn't convert but only celebrated Jewish holidays. There's a whole town in India for Jews called Kerala. They are almost extinct over skin color rather than caste. The original Jews were Black people/people of African descent. As Black people, we always start off these conversation from a historically faulty direction, attempting to justify our Jewishness-it faulty historically and anthropologically. I don’t want to go into a long spiel on how 10 thousand years ago these areas from Africa to Central Asia were occupied by people of African descent. Only later did invading Indo-European types arrive on the scene. I would only point you to the Lachish reliefs, sculpted by the Assyrians circa 700-686 B.C.E., depicting the people of Lachish, Judah’s second largest city, being taken into captivity by the Assyrians. All of the Judeans taken into captivity were men of African descent-all of them. Not one was depicted as what today would be described as Arab or SW or Central Asian. They were all men of African descent. So when we talk about this topic as Black people, there is no need for us to try to justify or prove our Jewishness. No, it is exactly the opposite question that should be asked-how is it that they claim to be descendants of the people of Judah. History is on our side, not theirs. When the Dutch West Indies, a major shipping company sent their team of 14 family experts to New Amsterdam (the original name of New York) to establish the firm's company and starting their million dollar business there, their Mayor, Peter Stuyvesant, a rampant Anti-Semite, wanted the team to leave. All of the team were Sephardic Jews. When word of this got back to the Dutch West Indies, they sent a note to the mayor that they will send their team and million dollar shipments to Virginia instead. He quickly changed his mind. That is not what that means at all. Sha'ul who y'all call Paul was speaking to the Diaspora. Israelites who were keeping the Torah vs Israelites who were not keeping the Torah. You can't convert to a bloodline. This is what happens when some try to read scriptures starting from the middle and no understanding what happened after the split of the two kingdoms. The Northern tribe abandoned the covenant and were coming back to the covenant.

My mother was Ashkenazi Jewish from Eastern Europe and my father African American Christian from West Africa via slavery. I am Jewish via maternal lineage. However growing up in New York in the 70/80s I wasn’t seen as Jewish by my peers because of my color, nor did I identify with Judaism because of Racist ideology at that time even though I grew up in Great Neck a predominantly Jewish neighborhood. I only “felt” Jewish after visiting Israel and seeing Yemenite Jews and Beta (Ethiopian) Jews who looked like me. I think it should be said that the original Jews in Israel and the Middle East were probably more olive complexed and via diaspora to Europe and mixing later assumed a lighter complexion.

Great videos. I have watched videos on the Igbos of Nigeria who practice Judaism. I'm 99 percent sure my Grandmother was a descendant of the black Igbos (Hebrews) brought to America and enslaved. Many of the things my Grandmother said and did are exact or similar to the Igbo people's customs.

There’s a lot, I do my own research and I know we as Black Americans are indeed one of the tribes “lost”. We were writing cursive Hebrew before the modern day slave owners beat it out of us which is prophecy of Torah.. there are many historians that studied the lost tribes in america which a lot of Jewish Europeans studied and learn most of our practices from them because we still kept the high holy days etc. it’s really interesting how certain people destroyed history but luckily everything was documented.
