Information in the tomb of Tutankhamun informs that Nefertiti is the daughter of queen Tiye (wife of Amenhotep III). Akhenaten was her full brother. Also in the tomb, Meritaten is the daughter of Amenhotep III and Nefertiti (not Akhenaten). I am aware that she is supposedly attested elsewhere as daughter of Akhenaten and I cannot say why because I did not look deeper into those references. I know from study they are somehow mistaken. Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Meritaten were all three siblings with Meritaten having a double dose of Amenhotep III (her father/grandfather). Akhenaten's Great Royal Wife was Nefertiti as also was Meritaten. The bloodline from Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye was unbroken in those three. Nefertiti had six daughters of which one was with Amenhotep III and five were later with Akhenaten. Akhenaten's sisters were his queens (not his daughter). Akhenaten and Meritaten conceived Tutankhaten (later named Tutankhamun). Nefertiti was the maternal grandmother/aunt of Tutankhamun. She had vested interests to care for him after his mother died on the throne. Akhenaten had died, Meritaten became pharaoh to hold the throne for the infant Tutankhaten. Neither she nor Nefertiti surrendered their titles as queens. Meritaten was king with a throne name and also served as queen to herself. Nefertiti was also on the throne as queen. (One or both serving as effectives for the deceased king Akhenaten to ultimately bring Tutankhamun into his rightful reign. But, Meritaten died leaving Tutankhamun and the kingdom to Nefertiti). She had a hellish period having lost the king (her husband/ brother) and her daughter (both in Tutankhamun's childhood). She also had to rule Egypt and preserve the throne. If the boy died, the dynasty would end. No pressure, right? Hellish. (Egyptology in time will eventually cone to recognize the references.) Ankhesenpaaten (later named Ankhesenamun) was the third daughter of Nefertiti and the second daughter of Akhenaten. Tutankhamun (his son with Meritaten) became pharaoh and ankhesenamun (Akhenaten's daughter) became his queen. Both were children of Akhenaten similarly as the previous king and queens were all children of Amenhotep III. One of the informative references in the tomb was the set of three large burial coffins and the gold mask. The coffins altogether represent the maternal lineage that produced Tutankhamun. The gold mask represents Ankhesenamun who extended that maternal line into the reign of Tutankamun. The first, outermost coffin represents Queen Tiye. The toe of that coffin is Shaved, shortened to demonstrate that Tiye was too great for that place (in the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun). The oversized coffin was symbolic of her greatness. The second coffin inside the first represents her daughter Nefertiti. The third coffin (solid gold) was inside the second and represents Meritaten (daughter of Nefertiti). The coffin is significantly solid gold because in part she produced the heir (Tutankhamun) that extended the line of kings rhat emerged from Meritaten. There is other significance to the gold coffin. Inside the gold coffin was the solid gold mask that represents Ankhesenamun (queen of Tutankhamun). The mask with mummy represent the kingship of Tutankhamun. The gold mask alone represents the successful extension of the maternal line from Queen Tiye into the kingship of Tutankhamun. The coffins and mask all represent females. They are not representations of Tutankhamun. The mummy is not the king whose regal and martial stature would be diminished by being found in a representation of his mother as if he were child in a nest of women. The DNA that is being examined is that of a servant of the king who represents the king. The king is elsewhere. The tomb spoke but people had to be attentive to it.

What of the marriage of Amenhotep III & Sitamun ~ his daughter by Tiye? What of the marriages of Amenhotep III & Gilukhipa & her niece Tadukhipa / Kiya? Did Tadukhipa / Kiya & Amenhotep IV / Akhenaten become the parents of Beketaten or was she the daughter of Amenhotep III & Tiye? What of the woman referred to as the sister of Neferiti, Mutnedjmet / Mutbenret, the wife of Horemheb? What of Smenkhare who was supposedly the husband of Meritaten & Neferneferuaten & either the son or brother of Amenhotep IV / Akhenaten? Who was Neferneferuaten? Was she Nefertiti? Is The Younger Lady Meritaten then? Does the fact that she was daughter of Amenhotep III & wife of Amenhotep IV / Akhenaten by a mother that had married both her father & her husband explain why there are such beautiful statues of Meritaten? I don't know if there was a formally recognized union in which she was given a title like King's Wife. She was his daughter by birth. Queen Tiye was her mother. I found no references that indicate the name of Meritaten ever changed. Also, there was a valid purpose for the individual changes in names from "Aten" to "Amun". The changes were not randomly made. Amenhotep III had a daughter named Beketaten. So, it was not only Akhenaten who recognized the Aten (although he elevated it to be central during his reign). Akhenaten did not per se "create" the Aten. He made it prominent in his reign. I can't speak on the speculations that Ankhesenamun "married" Ay after the death of Tutankhamun. I will only say that I doubt it happened and have found no references that was the case. She was a Pharaoh's queen. All others were servants to her husband. A lesson that should be learned from one of the Amarna Letters (in which the queen notes that she will not marry a servant) is that the queen of a pharaoh would be diminished by marrying a servant (anyone else in the court of her husband). Ay had served under Akhenaten and Tutankhamun. It seems unlikely to me that any of their queens would have become his wife. I don't know enough about Ankhesenpaaten -Tasherit and Meritaten -Tasherit. They did not meaningfully arise in my study-references. I suspect they might involve similar information as I found for Neferneferuaten Tasherit. Royal names were significant and not randomly assigned. A proper explanation is long. Smenkhkare (in my findings) was the throne name of Meritaten who was mother of the infant Tutankhaten. The boy was too young to reign when his father died. You will hear the argument that Meritaten is referenced as queen to Smenhkhare. Well, consider that Meritaten was queen to herself in her role as pharaoh. Some confusion arises from mistaking titles and offices for individuals. Simply, an individual is able to cccupy or serve in two or more official positions and simultaneously hold titles of several offices or positions. Pharaoh and queen were two such positions that could be occupied by one person. There is no conflict if one female is pharaoh and also queen. She was not going to produce more children who might be heir to the throne. Meritaten served for the purpose of holding the throne for the rightful heir to attain a sufficient age or maturity to take his reign. Akhenaten was aware of the arrangement (another very long explanation) although I can't demonstrate if or how he officially formalized the arrangement or if it was by tacit understanding. In any case, there was precedence for a queen to hold the throne as pharaoh for a child heir of her king . Hatshepsut had done the same for Thutmose III who was a child when his father died. (And, Hatshepsut did not steal or greedily usurp his reign as many people think.) Having said all this, there are still aspects that puzzle me about the Smenkhkare references. There seems to be a co-regency that included or involved Nefertiti with Meritaten. I don't understand the formal order of the relationships. Were both officially mandated by Akhenaten to be pharaoh (together or separately)? Did their positions as mother of the heir or queen inherently give them rights to be pharaoh or the boy's regent? Akhenaten is somehow involved. He knew about the queen's reign after him but I don't know if he was a member (the primary king) in the co-regency that arose after him. Did they begin to reign while he lived or only upon or after his death? A co-regency with a female would have certainly diminished his and his father's reputations. Tutankhaten is obviously involved but I don't know if he was included in the transitional co-regency or if he simply was the ultimate beneficiary of that arrangement. You ask. There are signatures for various purposes of reference in the ancient Egyptian context. Sitamun did not meaningfully arise in my studies of Tutankhamun’s tomb and did not qualify for inclusion in that context by any of the signatures. Perhaps she might qualify in a different context with Amenhotep III. Understand that the ancient Egyptians working with references across centuries and millennia had to have methods to validate and verify information such as family lineages and more. Someone could have falsely inserted a name in an inscribed record to contest or bring into questiion an official position or to associate themselves falsely with the royal line. Inscriptions are one aspect to record events but there were other aspects to help verify that information was valid and accurate. If a king in his reign for example wanted to know what transpired three hundred years before his reign, there had to be means to keep and get accurate information. An enemy having sacked records could not be an excuse for not having good records where dynasties and politics spanned across centuries. So, there were verification and validation signatures. You ask, "What of the marriages of Amenhotep III & Gilukhipa & her niece Tadukhipa / Kiya?" It is not something that I looked into. My focus was the tomb of Tutankhamun and I followed references that arose directly within and from that context. This has helped me to develop a systematic understanding of what the tomb involves and to recognize some basic signatures of ancient Egypt.
