I bought my 18 year old son the IAM roadsmart advanced driving course for £175 and the charity that facilitate the course are actually refunding the course fee for 18-25 year olds here in Cornwall if they pass the assessment first time. He's also done his Pass Plus. As a Paramedic of 36 years service I've seen the results of bad driving many many times so it was a no brainer to get my son to do more than just his driving test.

I'm sure they made an example of him as a warning to all car KZfaqrs, some of whom do go even faster. This has totally changed my opinion of Joe A, he's a really humble decent guy. Rather than trying to play the victim he's trying to educate. He's absolutely right about urban environments, and unless people take his message on baord we'll see more LTN's, speed bumps, traffic furniture and 20 mph limits.

Another brilliant listen/watch on KZfaq with so many points raised. My family get on at me for being Captain slow but I am such a keen driver I don't want points on my licence. I have been driving for 30+ years and averaged in excess of 15k miles p.a. so around half a million miles and only had 3 points and they were on the Isle of Lewis in 2003 and I think I was the only person on the island who had not been told the camera van had come over on the ferry that day not that I should have been speeding at all no excuse. It's not just the points it's the extra premium paid on Insurance policies that stings as well as the fine. I do value my clean licence. The piece about driving commentary is apt in our household as my wife was a police response driver so we sometimes play that game on a long drive to see how our awareness is. I agree with you re KZfaqrs speeding in video's whether in our out of built up area's surely influencers should be holding higher standards there is nothing wrong with a hearty 0 to 60 but then lift off. There was a lot of content recently on Gumball 3000 with very spirited driving on UK roads that I found shocking so much so I gave up watching any content outwith our shores. Already looking forward to your future content. A wee comment for Joe I felt your pain re the court case I have been in a similar position having to fight an expensive malicious court case brought against me out of pure spite instigated by people I had thought were friends of mine. I eventually won the case but my mental health suffered greatly at the time and reverberated off and on for the following 8 years in that any situation I encountered that was out of the ordinary that a well me would have dealt with meant I would have a breakdown and I would shut myself away and suffer. I am well now and hope that I have the tools to remain well as it has been !5 years since my last episode. I hope you are in the same position going forward.

I’d love to do a advanced drivers stuff with my camaro. Also here in the states at least when I got my drivers license. We had to do day driving night driving and meet a certain amount of drive time on town roads back roads and highway driving. Now my parents made me do drivers training during a time where I had to drive in snow as well even though that wasn’t a requirement. But I’m glad they did. The nascar video on Sir Pete’s channel is my favorite one! Definitely go give it a watch! Fantastic video and plenty of raw emotion!

As an IAM Roadsmart Advanced Driver, who has been an observer too, I thank you for you frank discussion about the importance of the standards of driving on the UK roads. Personally, it is as much attitude that is the issue with many people, which you touch on in your podcast. A lesson learnt and glad you can pass on the warnings and advice to others who think it's 'clever' or 'cool' to drive like a tool. Great, informative podcast. Thanks!!

Another goodie 👍 Totally agree regarding built up areas, etc. Choose appropriate areas to have a bit of fun. Anyone can go fast in a straight line, save it for the twisty bits where you don't have to break the sound barrier to get your kicks. Apparently they're starting to capture average speeds over distances in New Zealand, not sure how that works...

I did some ROSPA training and it did me the world of good. I’m no angel and a]always tended to be a bit over the limit in built up areas. Just because 30mph felt SO SLOW! The observed drives and and self commentary really do train you brain and foot, to effortlessly drive at 30mph or less without frustration. Regardless of your wheel skills, I guarantee you you’ll learn just how much we miss, when we go out for a hoon.

Having moved from the UK to Florida in 2008 I had to take a driving test within 3 months. This consisted of driving in a car park doing an emergency stop, parallel parking and stopping at a Stop sign. There is no compulsory driver education in Florida or many other States. 🤦‍♂

I’ve seen it a few times where diesel is cheaper than petrol. But from what I’ve seen, it seems to be restricted to one or two stations in an area. Tesco near where I live was like this at one point. There was also a Texaco garage near Helston in Cornwall where diesel was a few pence cheaper, but on the same journey (back to Perranporth, where my family and I we’re staying) at another Texaco garage, diesel was a few pence more expensive than petrol. It’s weird

A lot of very good points in this video. I have seen a couple of KZfaq films where the driver is holding the camera in one hand and some where there are no hands on the wheel. I would argue that the proliferation of 20mph zones that apply 24 hours a day are more to do with revenue from speeding fines than actual safety and anybody who says they never break the speed limit is either a saint or a liar

A great podcast and very honest. I feel for Joe and can't quite believe the "law" can use go pro footage that can't be verified with a date and time stamp. How can the authorities be sure the footage is genuine? That said I agree there are a few "You Tubers" who are acting irresponsibly when filming and pushing their luck. I agree if people want to be spirited on the roads they should look to taking their cars on a track day, but that's not cheap, it's a shame tracks can't offer a cheap day for the average motorist to drive their car around the track. I'm listening to these on Spotify in the car or when out walking so not easy to like or comment, hence why I'm here on "KZfaq". Anyway a great podcast. Really enjoying these. Cheers fellas.

So pleased about your choice of subject for this podcast. I think drives should spend money on improving their driving skills rather than modifying the cars. As you say, you can't legally drive a standard car to it's maximum potential on a public highway. So spend money on improving your skill. Net result less accidents, lower insurance costs. 👏👏👏

Good chat Joe. I don't think we need to be apologetic about speeding safely (and yes I truly mean that in safety mad 2023, it's not an oxymoron). Speeding safely is what makes driving/riding fun and one of the things that makes life worth living with the freedoms we've enjoyed for many decades.

Like you both said it’s time that the social media platforms cracked down on irresponsible/reckless driving posted on their sites. If a creator has blurred out the speedo there’s a good chance he’s done so to protect himself so the video should be removed. I love a bit of sprited driving in the right place and time. There are so many cars that can give you a rewarding drive but within the speed limits. Great podcast chaps 👍👍👍

35:00 only taking your Automatic/EV only limits you in the future. Most of the people who don't own a car in the city, but rent a car or van either here or on holiday somewhere else and you may not have a choice. Here in Finland we are buying a sub €1000 old Twingo or similar for the kids to learn as a 1st car. Good basis for loose surfaces and ice. Also smaller studs have a much more linear transition and EVs with big tires its harder as there is no weight tranfer/pitch/roll and grip is higher.. then it isn't.

Not speeding is a lot more complicated these days. It was easier to comply when it was 30 in built up/street lit areas, 60 in countryside and 70 on dual carriageways & motorways. Now, sections of the same road can flip flop between 30, 40, 50, 60 and even 70 mph. Agree with the (try to) never break 20, 30 40 & 50 mph limits. Lower ones for pedestrians/cats/dogs etc., coming into road, higher ones because of numbers of cameras.

Ped I couldn’t agree with you both more, I am retired now but was trained to the highest level of police driving and have witnessed far too many horrific scenes caused by speed. I have emailed certain KZfaqrs suggesting they should take a video down or advised the risks they are taking to their licence as well as the potential harm to themselves and other road users. The usual response is it was safe and is made to look faster than it was (utter bullsh*t, engine tone, gear changes, facial expressions are a dead giveaway) There is a belief that if we can’t see the Speedo then they are safe. However if we can pinpoint the location then we can measure the speed along with careless and dangerous driving. Most of the time it can be reported to us from other road users, dash cams now are hard evidence and can’t be disputed. Joe, I would suggest because you named where you were and complaints were probably received is why you were targeted. As you were a face then you were probably made an example of. That all said I get frustrated when I hear that the information submitted to CPS has been worded incorrectly just to try and get a conviction. That’s unacceptable and not fitting for any Police force to do. We have all driven spiritedly and I can understand in the right location why this happens. What I would say is you will still not recognise the unknowns, Ped you did your masters where you did the hour & half of test where you have to communicate everything your doing and what you’re seeing, you also know that you’re expected to be looking so much further ahead than a normal driver and if you miss something it can be an instant fail. In a spirited drive or B road bashing the likelihood is this will be on more rural roads, the chances of a deer jumping out or other unknowns are often forgotten. Hitting a deer at 60 miles an hour will cause a serious amount of damage. As you say take it to the track, no parent, wife, husband, son, daughter wants that knock on the door from a Police Officer saying their loved one wont be coming home. Sorry for the long winded email, but when you have seen the results of accidents caused by speed I’m sure you’ll understand. Well done for starting this conversation

I agree if someone hasnt driven for a while then a refresher is fine but you gain experience everytime you go out for a drive otherwise yiud never get any better than the day you passed your test which is a ridiculous thought.

After 30 years of clean licence I finally got caught on M1 doing 80mph by a yellow box. No skill involved in this no driving style taken into account, weather or time of night. If it was a real cop following me this would not have happened I go as far to say I was barely keeping up with traffic outside of everyone braking hard for these cameras.

It baffles me sometimes how harsh the police are for such minor things, yet there’s a lot of people that take the absolute piss and get away with it. It’s the same with license plates and other car mods. DMO had a video a couple years ago with showed him doing 160mph (camera in the car showing the speedo) on busy public roads on the outskirts of london and it was never questioned 😂

What a waste of time and resources by the police, when you weren’t driving in anyway dangerously. I love a bit of spirited driving, and you can guarantee the person doing 40mph in the 60mph, will get to a 30 and carry on at the same speed still
@wrightwoodwork

A thing that everyone should do is have a look at thier average speed. They will be surprised at how low it is. Probably around 30 to 40 that includes rural and urban driving. So does it really matter if you have to drive a bit slower for a few minutes as its not going to change your average speed on the whole and driving like a twat isn't really going to increase your average speed on the whole.

I think driving standards in the U.K. are dropping and becoming increasingly dangerous. I’m not the best driver, but I try and maintain a good standard. I used to be blue light trained, but my qualifications expired and as much as I tried to get the continuation training, I was unable… I’m hoping that will change soon and I can improve my skills. When my son passed his test, he had a basic Skoda Citigo and then he moved to a Skoda Fabia, increasing the horse power. He now had a Abarth 595 and gone up in horse power again. He’s happy with his Abarth and doesn’t want to go up the power scale any further for now.
