As far as baseball movies go, Major League was definitely a grand slam. The 1989 comedy featured a sweetheart season for a down-and-out Cleveland Indians filled with lovably bonkers characters, friction between players and team executives, and a lot of feel-good fun that still resonates with audiences decades after the fact. My girlfriend is from Cleveland and "Major League" is religion to Indians fans. Every line is quotable...and the story is great. I want a Jobu Doll.

My uncle was a stuntman in Major League II. He was the stuntman for the catcher, Rube Baker. That means that whenever they didn't zoom in on the catcher's face during the games and practices, my uncle was the catcher. His name is Wayne Williams. He was a minor league catcher in the Blue Jays' farm system for the Idaho Falls Angels (now Idaho Falls Chukars). He only played one year though before retiring. He was drafted straight out of high school from Towson, Maryland. His manager for the Angels hated him for no particular reason, so he didn't give him much playing time. He was cut after one year and retired due to poor free agent marketing. It was unique to see my uncle in Major League II. That means that he met guys like Charlie Sheen before he became a jerk, Dennis from the All-State commercials, and Tom Berenger.

Lots of local connections in that film. The Yankees closer was actually Willie Mueller, who is from my hometown (West Bend, WI) and played briefly with the Brewers. The Yankees 3rd baseman went to my high school. The whole area went bat shit crazy when they filmed it here, and the crowd reactions were genuine.

I remember in 1991, being a Braves fan, that near the end of that season, my sister asked me if I had ever seen "Major League". I admitted I had not. She told me I needed to because it was virtually the Atlanta Braves to a tee. I did, and I have to say that the similarities in the movie with the 1991 Atlanta Braves actual team were quite striking.
