Pink Floyd is one of the few bands with a truly massive staying power. Founded in 1965, people of all ages are still listening to their music today. Originally influences by music hall and blues sounds, the band later pivoted to psychedelic rock thanks to founding member Syd Barrett, whose tenure with the group was highly influential but brief.
Pink Floyd's run essentially ended in 1983, though founder Roger Waters continued as a solo artist while the other members of the band released two more albums as Pink Floyd in the '80s and '90s. Though their life as a band has been troubled in numerous ways, their impact can't be denied. Here's the untold truth of Pink Floyd.

I was born in late 1985. Dallas, Texas. I remember CLEARLY being 2-3 years old, back seat of my mom's car, driving under the highway lights in Dallas when "Money" came on... that song did something to me that I never could explain until 10 years later when I was 12-13 and got high for the first time... when the pot kicked in, I had an immediate flashback to that night, and realized that "Money" gave me a natural high. Many artists and songs have been able to hit me that same way (especially after the epiphany), and many even more so than "Money" since... but I remember CLEARLY the very first time that I was aware of it.

I’ve read other versions about the spitting incident, but I never quite heard it that way. According to most sources, the fan had been belligerent most of the night and was actively trying to climb over the netting barriers onto the stage when Roger came over and spit on him. The security crew may have been wrestling him away from the stage, but they did not bring him over and hold him down so Roger could spit on him. It was in the middle of a performance! That’s ludicrous to think the road crew would want to bring a crazed fan up on stage so Roger could deal with him while they were in the middle of a show - that doesn’t even make sense the way you told it here.

Back in the early 80's a group of us were stoned and tripping heavily on mushrooms. We went out and stole a bunch of those flashing yellow lights that were mounted to the sawhorses that they used to use in road construction zones, took them back to the house and put them in a closet that was lined with aluminum foil. We then took turns sitting on a chair in that closet with that song playing loud through headphones to see who could last the longest in there. Talk about sensory overload, no one made it more than a minute. Thanks for the flashback!

Rogers problem was jealousy. Gilmour was getting credit for his guitar playing even though waters wrote a lot of the music (not the solos). Rogers narcissism and need for control got him where he was. He deserves a lot of credit for what he accomplished, but his stuff without the band just isn’t as good when they are together. He put too much weight on his writing giving him a sense of “I’m better than you” mentality as if what the band contributed was nothing

Barrett, Barrett, Barrett, spare me. Most overrated guy in the history of music. If he would have stayed we would not be talking about them today. I’m not saying that his replacement David Gilmore has done it all but Barrett leaving made room for Gilmore and helped Roger Waters come out as the great songwriter he is.

I've never understood Syds music. I'm not a musician. Just been a huge floyd fan for 40 years and what the 4 of them did together was magic. Personally I'm happy that Syd got dropped and replaced with Gilmour but many people who actually knows music and play music say that Syd had something special. Idk what it is but if there was no Syd, there probably wouldn't be any floyd at all

Barrett accomplished his own magnum opus (piper atgod) in one record straight out the gate no pun intended. It took the floyd 3 albums after that to finally perfect their craft. If syd would have stayed we have no idea what kind of tunes they would have developed along side syds own growth but you can't really say they wouldnt be talked about because syd was already being talked about in the scene. You gotta realize it was the late 60s. Piper as a whole has so much variety and special psychedelic moments that just can't be dismissed. I feel syd would've taken the band to a more revolutionary punk scene. Evident by the song scream thy last scream, one of my favorites of the band.

Waters solo career never really took off because he's not that great of a musician. David Gilmour on the other hand is the best voice/guitar combination in music history. Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell definitely lack lyrically, but they still sound better than anything Waters ever did solo. Sidenote - The Final Cut is my least favorite Floyd album.

Yeah... no Best song on Animals? - Easy - Dogs - because David Gilmour Best song The Wall? Easier - Comfortably Numb - ooops because David Gilmour again Waters was (is) an egomaniac who has some talent - but can't accept he is not God. Also High Hopes is better than anything Waters ever did

@@timclute9507 We will have to agree to disagree. The Pros And Cons Of Hitchhiking using studio musicians and Eric Clapton on guitar was more "Pink Floyd" than anything Pink Floyd ever did after Roger Waters left.

Waters has a huge ego. The arrogance of spitting on someone's face. He has been wrong many times. People need to stop worshipping celebrities just because they have talent. They go to the bathroom just like everyone else and need to be held accountable for nasty behavior. For the record, I am a big Pink Floyd fan. Pun intended.

Syd Barrett is highly overrated and his music stinks. Only after he left did Pink Floyd excel and become the great musical geniuses we know and love. Barrett would have killed Pink Floyd by 1970…they would cease to exist or at the very most write music for junkies and children.

Well, your opinion doesn’t matter since you are talking complete nonsense! Their sound is really a thing of its own, the first albums are all about that, their lyrics were really meaningful when Roger wrote them, and the other classic rock bands kinda sucked at this point, because they were all writing about stupid love etc. This band is so huge because it is one of the greatest bands ever, unlike someone really overrated, like The Eagles
