Spinal Tap may have been a fake band, but there was some real musicianship behind the parody - and drummer Ric Parnell was a big part of that.
In Rob Reiner's classic comedy, the guitarist, singer, and bassist for Spinal Tap were portrayed by actors Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer. But the band's drummer, Mick Shrimpton, was played by Ric Parnell, the Atomic Rooster drummer who performed and recorded with many acts. (You may have heard his drumming in the Toni Basil hit "Mickey.")
Ric Parnell died in May 2022, leaving behind a body of work to be proud of - including his work in one of the best comedies ever. This is the untold truth of Ric Parnell of Spinal Tap.

I got record music with this fellow in Missoula and I hooked him up with pot dozens of times. He was a fantastic storyteller and had a beautiful heart. My cousin and I visited him a few days before he died. Held his hand and told him I loved him. Ric said I love you, bro 😢

Rick had so many friends and acquaintances and everybody spoke so highly of him. I'm honored to have been one of his friends, I met him through John Goodsall when Ric subbed at Fire Merchants gigs. Me and my brother were the roadies. We stayed in touch right to the end and I miss him a lot.

One glaring omission, it is known that Ric played on a couple of the biggest tracks by Billy Idol, they never credited him for the session work. A very funny and modest man. His tagline was "I hit things for a living". He told a story of how Ginger Baker was being introduced to him, when he had to avoid an attack from Baker, who tried to 'nut him' for no reason . It was a pleasure to have exchanges with him on Facebook.

I met him in a bar one time, he was playing here in Saskatoon in a blues band or something. He was really cool, he sat with me and my buddy and told us all about the making of Spinal Tap, and how he was kinda on top of the world at the time because he was in a movie and a song he played drums on was a hit on the radio (Mickey)....

We had a mutual friend circa '70's in Rathmines Dublin, Olivia Fitzsimons ,she promoted singer Tim Rose who recorded Hey Joe ,I never got to play with Ric ,we'd talked about it as happens so often in the music industry, but a more talented drummer and all round sweet guy you couldn't meet.Listen to the drum breaks on "Tomorrow night " by Atomic Rooster ,precision timing and skills to die for .Rated by his peers as one of the very best in the business, and humble to a fault. R.I.P Mate.

Paul Hammond was the drummer on the Death Walks Behind you version of Tomorrow night and Carl Palmer played on the demo of the song. Ric did play it live after Paul Hammond left Atomic Rooster in 1971.

Ric was my pal during his time in Long Beach CA,I was in Joe Houston’s band with him. Great drummer & stellar individual,Godspeed ‘Cross the Great Divide old friend

Toni Basil's surname is pronounced "Bazil", not "Bossil". Also, the title is "Mickey". "Younger twin brother", love it!

I was in bands on Long Island from 1985-1993 and most musicians I had met loved Spinal Tap. I don’t think they were abusing heavy metal as much as mocking the craziness of it. Take many AC/DC songs and exaggerate them just a little and there is Spinal Tap. Is loose lips sink ships much different then you’re too young and I’m too well hung.

this should have been about Ric, not Spinal Tap. there are a couple of photos of Ric recording in my studio with Donovan's Brain and Deniz Tek. He is on ten albums with those two bands. recorded between 2010 and 2022. His last session work was with Donovan's Brain in 2022. Look for the Deniz Tek = Rabid Sessions vid here on KZfaq. There was a lot more to the man. You had to have been there

Sun Supreme by the Italian band Ibis is a sooper-dope prog album. Ibis was an offshoot of The New Trolls, a Legendary Italian band.

I knew of Ric only through an Italian fusion band called Nova. My friend gave me the album because he thought it was awful but I loved the band and Ric’s explosive drumming. Check out on KZfaq You are light and Marshal Dillion. RIP Ric you brought some great playing our way.

Okay, here's the deal. This Is Spinal Tap is not about a movie based on a real band. This Is Spinal Tap is a movie ABOUT a rock band, a make-believe band, a fictional characteristic band that didn't exist similar in the same vein as the 1960s television show The Monkees, which needs no further discussion. Ric Parnell is the real drummer in this movie while all the others ( Rob Reiner and the 3 core members of Spinal Tap ) are all actors. Heck, Rob Reiner's been on All In The Family all these years and debuted as one of the two panelists on The $10,000 Pyramid and you didn't know about that? One of the band member actors appeared on Laverne and Shirley while another did voice work on the show Gumby. My thesis statement? Spinal Tap is not real, man.

Yes you are right the 3 core Members of the band were actors but they did play in that band. No I would not put them up against the best musicians in rock but they really played.
