Before hit comedy shows like "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" that pushed the boundaries of eccentric humor, there was "The Andy Griffith Show." The program aired on CBS from 1960 to 1968 and featured the story of a widowed sheriff and the fictional eccentric community of Mayberry, North Carolina. "The Andy Griffith Show" was one of the most successful shows of the '60s and over the years it has continually been looked at as one of the best series in American television history by various publications.
Back when "The Andy Griffith Show" aired it was a program that evoked nostalgia, and today it still displays a much simpler time in America. Here is the untold truth about "The Andy Griffith Show."

I also grew up in rural southeast Missouri. I knew all of my neighbors and in fact I loved my neighbor like a third grandfather. He was a single old gentleman who had a heart of Gold. Growing up I had from my parents small farm to the Mississippi River as my playground. I roamed the woods and fields of my area with my group of friends. I learned to appreciate the people and their kindness that they had shown me. Everyone looked out for everyone. My friends parents were allowed to discipline me and my parents disciplined my friends. In fact when one of my friends parents caught me smoking not only did my buddies dad whoop my butt he called my parents and my dad whopped my butt. It didn’t work. I’m still smoking 43 years later. Small town life, in my opinion, is the best life a person can live. In fact my hometown is still basically the same as when I grew up there. There is only a little better than 3,200 people. Everyone, for the most part, still looks out for each other. Kids still play in the same woods that I did way back when. We still have neighborhood block parties and Friday night football still is the best night of the week. I truly miss being young and wild and free, roaming those hills. I still dove and deer hunt in those woods.

My dad grew up watching them with his dad in the 60's and 70's and then my little brother and I grew up watching them with him. I guess I'll keep it going if my wife ever spits out any youngens lol... And wow... There were a few episodes when Barney was napping and Andy played a trick on him. Once he took his shoes and hid them in the desk drawer. Another was when he exchanged hats with him A third was his best. As Barney slept, Andy covered him up with a blanket and tucked the ends under the legs of the cot. When he woke Barney up he couldn't move but finally managed to get out!

Andy actually had five love interests on the show: Elly Walker, TWO county nurses both names Mary (A blond and a brunette), Then there was Peggy MacMillan, a nurse at a hospital outside the city limits. Everyone was pulling for the two of them but it was a love that was not to be lasting only five episodes, so he ended up with Helen Crump who many fans did not like. The way Barney got to marry Thelma Lou was that she left town right after Barney did and returned with her husband. In the reunion move, she returns widowed or divorced and meets Andy at the cemetery and he takes her to see Barney and they fall in love all over again getting married in a barn where the Darlin family enter the barn playing.

Floyd had a stroke in the middle of the first season not in the show's RUN! You are right about Don being on for five years. This was ONLY because of what Andy said. It was obvious that Andy did NOT support the idea of the show because he said he would only commit to five years. Had he not said that, Don would not have left the show! No, once Don left, the show sadly lacked the pazaz it had with Don. I am very surprised it lasted two seasons without him. Not even when he guess stared those three times, it just wasn't the same! Don Knots WAS the show!

Actually he had his stroke during the 3rd season. Convicts At Large was the last episode he did before the stroke in 1962, which is during the shows run and he was gone for 2 years, returning in 1964 in the episode Andy Saves Gomer. Even during the 1st season, it is considered the shows run. Just saying.

Colorizing the show served only to ruin the effect of nastalgia the show has. There are very few of them I liked. I have taken several trivia quizzes in the show and rarely got a question wrong.

Francis In TRUTH was a "Karen" of the day. She liked no one but DETESTED Andy. She played her part as a loving aunt very well and fooled EVERYONE. It waa in the late 80's that I found out the TRUTH. I ever respected her after that. She called Any JUST BEFORE her death to patch things us between them. She died leaving 13 cats plus her entire estate to Siler City, NC where she lived outvher final years. She had no family.

This was the FIRST time I have heard the TRUTH actually MENTIONED as to why Don Knotts left after 5 years. Other versions indicate that he left after 5 years but FAIL to mention why! I am one of thousands of fans who KNOW that once Don was gone, sonar the LUSTER of show. The replacement deputy sort of ruined the show so he lasted only a few episodes. ALL TAGS fans are shocked that the show ceased to EXIST when Don left.
