I see a common theme in this unused content. A lot of it might have been unused to make the game distance itself from the fact that zombies USED to be people with jobs and families, and reminding the player of that might have been too dark for the "fun" aesthetic Popcap was going for with the game Examples of that being the case are the removal of references to the jobs that the conehead and buckethead used to have before dying (which could also have been to standardize the appearance of the zombies after their armor gets removed) and the removal of the children and mom zombies (the children zombies might have been replaced by imps?? idk) In the finalized version of the game, the zombies ended up seeming more like _"cRaZy!!"_ and _"wAcKy!!"_ cartoon monsters who take random stuff from the streets because they're dumb, rather than _actual people_ who died, and I think that was a good decision from Popcap

god i love stinger's design, the one used in the betas, i don't care what it does i love how it looks

In the files of the pvz beta you can find things like a gargantuar helmet, golden fertilizer, golden gramophone. Those are the ones I remember, but there are more things too.

I think if Stinger wasn't just cactus but worst she would shoots bee stingers that slowly poisons zombies over time. She can also make honey to slow down zombies in there tracks.

One very interesting thing to mention about the Ice Level is that it was supposedly the inspiration for the Yeti Zombie, who was added alongside it for the April Fool's joke and then kept in as his current incarnation

I have no clue if it’s an intentional reference or not, but the early Split-Pea’s design immediately made me think of Invader Zim. Specifically the episode where Zim grows a giant zit and disguises it as his friend “Pustulio.” Looking it up, they even both have little purple suits!

i love how they converted the name Bloom and Doom from the game's title to being part of the lore by creating Bloom and Doom co. as the manufacturer of these plants as seen in the seed packets

Stinger is a nice concept, considering one of the arts is a beehive on a plant, leading to a lot of potential uses. Maybe bees would fly at zombies and sting them and, if there are no zombies on a lane, the amount of bees builds up. The timestopper isn't actually that odd looking, considering flower pot and plantern exist, it kinda looks like an apple with clock hands on it. It could be neat, if it slowed down time for a few seconds while also recharging your plants, letting you micro manage everything.

Underrated content. Keep grinding my man.

I'm almost sad they didn't stick with the concept name "Zombies ate my Beans!"

You forgot about the unused track titled 'Zombotany' which was the beta track for the Zomboss stage. It was scrapped due to it's intense part being too short (or something like that). People tend to believe it was for the zombotany minigame but the claim was disproven by Laura Shigihara.

I actually see Duplicator Cycle's use here. It becomes useful as soon as you place the 2nd one. You can only bring a certain number of plants for a level. However, as soon as you place the 2nd Duplicator Cycle, it will look as if you brought an additional Imitater. Imagine choosing Doom-shroom for a level and having 5 Duplicator Cycles on the lawn. With enough sun, you can immediately end the game lmao.

Man I'm kinda done with pvz as a whole, but I still enjoy watching you so much. One of the few content creators I watch daily and its so sad you arent more well known.

Aight so I wasn't tripping the entire time. I clearly remember the dancing zombie wearing the red outfit while I played the game as a kid and was confused by the replaced one.

Two things I want to say that weren't featured in the video as cut content was that there was gonna be a sixth level in the game which would've been the night time variant of the Roof which is where Dr Zomboss was gonna be fought in, but the idea was dropped and only 1 night time roof level remained in the final game being level 5-10 the part where adventure ends and you fight Dr Zomboss in, there is a concept that features a night time level that looks like fog except without the pool and fog with it having six lanes of the regular ones from Day and Night and some sort of corner on the top right end of where 4 lanes were in the corner while the other 2 weren't it can be played in the beta version of the game, the 2nd being cut on the PC version of the game is Versus mode, originally PC players would've been able to play Versus mode prior to the Xbox, PS and DS versions coming out, but was of course scrapped, idk why but it's honestly a shame we didn't get a PC version of versus, cause it would've been nice for us PC players to play and compete against other players.

Heck, I don't think I've even seen ANY English videos of the first game's unused content at all (like on screen text OR commentary). So you are a HERO for these! THANK YOU SO MUCH! =D

I wish they kept the potato mine early design, but make the leaves blink red when ready to explode. It looks much more like a plant than the current one (but I prefer it's buck tooth and round black eyes though).

i think videos showcasing and talking about the worlds and plants/zombies unique to the Chinese version would make for a great series, great video as usual.

I actually liked the Iceberg Lettuce's ability in this one.

That beehive one wouldve been cool if it had a better use. Like, it has bees that come out of it and attack zombies around the lawn similar to cattail and even pop balloons or something. Maybe the bees would slow zombies instead or just act like electric blueberry where they come in a cloud, sting a zombie to death and go to rest in the hive. Honestly this was a good idea.

I think Dog-Walker Zombie may be a concept that got reused/changed into Newspaper Zombie. A two-phase zombie that has a counterpart with higher movespeed and damage after phase 1 is killed. Just that a zombie dog didn't fit as well so it got changed. Explains why Newspaper exists, it is kind of a weird zombie compared to the rest.

This was a great watch, I didn't know most of these somehow even though I've been a huge fan for PVZ for years

on the topic of sunflower's old sun cost, it actually wasn't changed to speed up the game in the early versions of the game, player's tended to ignore planting sunflowers early on due to their high sun cost, a habit that wouldn't be sustainable once they reach the later levels to remedy this, sunflower's price was reduced to match your starting price, as this would let its seed packet glow at the start of the level to signify it was ready to be planted, which means players are naturally more likely to plant it at the start this also resulted in a lot of changes to the game's balance, since they had to nerf its sun production, and even made cheap plants like potato mine and wall nut start the level having to recharge so sunflower was the only plant ready to be planted

Unused content is one of my favorite things about video games... there are so many interesting concepts
