You can say that again. Thankfully I still own a Sega Mega Drive, with Mega CD Model I and 32X attachments. And I still play them at a regular basis. The fact that it carried Master System hardware makes it the perfect omni-console. That and I am a huge fan of retro technology. I found the Mega Drive at a local Charity Shop here in Australia for $5AU!

I'll never forget those exciting days wondering what incredible visual and sound effects we'd see on SEGA's machines in the coming years. Of course, once the Sega CD came out with a powerful new CPU, 1MB of system RAM, 8 channel PCM audio, 550MB games, and some mysterious 3D chip that could pull off hardware scaling, rotation, and warping, our eyes just watered over the potential of this $300 addon that was sure to prove us SEGA fans 100% right from day one! Of course, there were only ever 12-15 games that ever used that ASIC DSP at all, and SEGA never once thought to advertise ANY of them on TV... resulting in us being mocked and ridiculed by neighbors and kids who insisted that this albatross could only do s***y FMV games.

For me, being someone born in 1999 and who largely had a childhood around arcades, I had no idea just how "dominant" Nintendo and Sony were considered until way later. Sega and Namco were what I considered the kings of gaming with Konami and Capcom not far behind and Nintendo practically had ZERO arcade presence.

I felt remorse at the time because I didn't have a Saturn or Dreamcast and felt like people like me were partly responsible for Sega's demise. I liked Sega and always had fond memories of the older consoles lke the Master System and the Dreamcast, but Sony came along with the PlayStation and PlayStation 2. Those won me over, and in the harsh world of market forces and economics, it killed Sega in the console business. By the time I considered getting a Sega Dreamcast it was already dead in the water. Thing is, even now I'll probably still consider picking up a Sega console if they re-entered the hardware business and release a new beefy console again. I still don't hear a bad word about Sega all these decades later, and I'm personally long tired of the PlayStation brand which has been on a steady decline for three generations now in my opinion.

WHen I was a kid, my mom grabbed a bunch of empty Genesis boxes, and she would cut the cardboard cases, and place them into the hard cases. Something I didn't appreciate until years later. I guess you could argue she ruined those cases, but it never, and still doesn't bother me.

One of my biggest letdowns was the platform-exclusive titles that Sega spread amongst the GCN, Xbox, and PS2. I could only afford one console and chose the GameCube, and it bothered me that games/series I loved on the Dreamcast--namely Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, and Crazy Taxi--were not going to get new games on the GCN, as Shenmue II, JSR Future, and Crazy Taxi 3 were Xbox exclusives. Not only that, Shenmue and JSR were niche games that could have used a broad exposure to new audiences on both GCN and PS2.

As a lifelong Sega fan lots of ups and downs, but I do remember the crummy capacitors and power socket finally killing my beloved Game Gear and it breaking my heart a little after saving up for it at age 10. That said, it was a fantastic platform and I loved being able to play my Master System titles on it. Other highlights were London's F1 car cabinets for Virtua Racing, all linked for party play, and that first time turning on my Saturn and hearing the Panzer Dragoon score.

Sega was my favorite arcade creator. I remember going to my cousin's house and they just received the master system .... This was before I played an NES, I was completely blown away by space harrier , out run and Astro warriors. I still remember the day we finally got our own master system and playing space harrier . Our NES came about a year later in '89 . I bought the Genesis with altered beast and the Mail in offer of sonic.. I remember waiting for the game to arrive and finally coming home after school and my dad hands me over a package with my name on it ! My biggest disappointment with Sega was how they did little support for us Saturn and Dreamcast owners....

Excuse my ignorance but I thought the 6 button controller was simply an original controller but with 6 buttons ? What are the differences between them ? When I had a Genesis my 6 button controller was a (decent) third party one so I don't think I ever actually used an authentic 6 button Genesis controller. I might look into the Big6, does it have shoulder buttons ? I can really use it for emulation, plus It's weird trying to use a PS4 controller when emulating Genesis games. Plus the 6 button controller is great for fighting games.

I've always been a huge Sega fan and have to say that is really a very difficult task. The japanese Mega Drive was my first videogame ever, back in 1991 so it's always been closer to my hear than any other console or company. I'd say my top sega let downs are: 1 - Sega abandoning my beloved franchises on Saturn - especially Streets of Rage and Sonic the Hedegehog. I always imagine what would be like to see the games I loved so much (and still play to this day) on the mega drive/genesis on the next generation(s) and was immensely disappointed when there was no Sonic, no SoR, no Toejam & Earl, no (real) Golden Axe and even a Comix Zone sequel on the Saturn. 2 - Still no Streets of Rage on the Dreamcast: when the Dreamcast came to life it filled me with many hopes that Sega would do it right and I would finally see my beloved games on their new console, but nah. 3 - Streets of Rage 3: I love SoR 1 and 2 so much that I could not wait to play SoR 3 when i first heard about them on magazines. I hard a hard time trying to rent it from my local store because they only had the one cartridge and it was always rented. Until one day I finally came across it and it was another huge deception. The american version is HORRIBLE, to this day I can't play it and still think that it looks like a rom hack of SOR2. Also, they kept my all time favorite sor character - Adam Hunter - out of it again 4 - Pulling the plug on the Dreamcast and console making altogether: I've felt REALLY betrayed and abandoned when this happened. I could not believe what the magazines were saying. And the first time I saw Sonic on a nintendo platform (Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the Gamecube) it really made me sad.

I have watched most of your videos now, and I find it amazing how close your stories are to mine. When watching, I nod my head in complete agreement and just laugh at the similarities!!! I ordered a lot of my systems from Japan and was a die-hard Sgea kid!! Now, I'm a much older gamer but will never forget the highs and lows of being a Sega fan. When Sega got it right, I was riding high with them, but when they screwed up and I paid hard earned cash for their poor releases, it pissed me off sooooo much. I just love hearing such parallels with your videos. You have a great way with words, and I thought that no one else felt the way I did back in the days. Still have all my systems and games so glad of that no matter how good they were....or how let down I was. Keep up the great work!!

One time Sega let me down... 2020 when they split with Demiurge and shutdown their Sega Heroes iOS game. That game to me was the best as it brought together all the Sega Heroes into one game. Legendary heroes from games like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Shinobi (among many others) coming together on one team was EPIC. I am still very very upset that this game was not given an offline option and was shutdown.

It's never easy to be a Sega fan. KZfaqrs like Arlo lament having to wait four years to get news on a game. Some of us Sega fans have been waiting for over 20 years to get updates to some Sega classics. Sonic Mania and Streets of Rage 4 prove that some new blood and passion can see beloved games return back to life. I never bothered with RPG games in the Mega Drive era, those slow-paced dialogue-heavy games never appealed to me. Panzer Dragoon Saga was my first foray into the genre and I loved it. I think it is a travesty that Saga and later on Skies of Arcadia never got proper sequels. I think another bone-headed move by Sega was refusing to release Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram in Europe. I had to wait until the Xbox 360 before I got to play that. Okay, so the controls would be a bit fiddly but I can confirm that people in the UK like big stompy robots and I'm sure continental Europe won't be that different.

I couldn’t help siding with Sega! I was only 3 when we got our first console, the Mega Drive! We were given a Super Nintendo at one point but we only had Street Fighter 2 for it! PDSAGA big fan here! I can totally understand Sega Lord X reason for not enjoying it that much. I'm younger (36 years) and I live in a small place in Portugal where there wasn't many people with consoles or games. For some odd reason the Saturn was fairly successful in its early years here in Portugal and that's the console kids would normally had. My chance to experience PDSaga was thanks to a friend of a brother of a friend. I can't express how I adored that game and how it´s still my favourite game ever. Many people forget to mention that every single character that live in the game's world is fully voiced at every single word, not to mention the dragon's transformations and...well, it was my very first RPG. I have the original copy that I bought from that friend of a brother of a friend and it's my "precious".

I was never a sega fan until the dreamcast. In fact I remember always arguing with my friends about the merits of the super nintendo. Since I've been watching your channel I've bought a few different emulation systems and have been checking out all the old school sega games. Now you're the only channel I have a patreon account with and I'm a huge sega fan. My brother said "that is fucking weird" but we've been both tearing into sega's old school library and enjoying the shit out of it. Weirdly enough, the japanese version of contra hard corps is my fave retro game of all time. My bother and I learned it and tore through every path in a single afternoon while we were visiting our parents for xmas. The fact that the genesis could do everything it did in that game with multiple paths and endings is proof alone that it could go blow to blow with the super nes. The japanese version made it so much more accessible to beat. The crazy thing is that it was never even on my radar until I had subscribed to your channel. So thank you Sega Lord X. I love your content and will always be a loyal member of your community. You kick ass

Not exactly what you are suggesting but there's a new game on Steam which basically asks the question: "What if someone made a top tier action platformer taking full advantage of Mega-CD's expanded capabilities?" It's called "Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider". It really feels like a lost Mega-CD game. It uses the MD's color pallet, but adds lots of scaling and rotation, including Batman Returns style driving sections, Mega-CD style PCM sound effects and redbook soundtrack, as well as things that are just beyond what the MD's M68000 CPU was capable of but within the realm of the speedier MCD CPU. I guess that the same developer's "Blazing Chrome" is also like if someone made a "Contra: Hard Corps" sequel for the Mega-CD, taking full advantage of its capabilities. I've yet to play the latter though.

Growing up a Sonic nut, my biggest dissapointment was when Sonic Boom for Wii U turned out the way it did. It was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak, I was just getting into Pokemon due to friends at school and it completley took over as my special interest from then on. But when Sonic Frontiers came out I was so overjoyed, it really gave me the feeling of what I loved about Sonic growing up. Mania was very exciting but I have played many good 2D sonics, both fan made and official. But Frontiers was the first 3D sonic I thought was great without any caveats.

For me the biggest letdown as a Saturn owner back then was that I couldn't find any games for it. Saturn was not selling at all, so retailers wouldn't bother to put Saturn games and accessories in their shops. I could see amazing games like Dragon Force, Dark Saviour Fighter's Megamix etc on magazines like GamePro, but no one was selling them in my region. You could find everywhere Playstation and N64 games because they were selling like hot cakes, but no Saturn. Of course back in the late 90's we didn't have online sales so all I could do was go from shop to shop hoping to find something good at a reasonable price.

I remember an article from the 2000s that nailed the whys of Sega's failures. Serious lack of understanding between Sega of America and Sega of Japan that drove to silly things like 32x or the premature killing of the Saturn; Awesome IPs that never left Japan just because Sega of America didn't see the potential; Huge arcades like Lost World Jurassic Park or Star Wars Racer Arcade (much better graphics than the Lucasfilm game) that never saw the light just because they didn't get the licensing to the Dreamcast; They didn't push enough the sports section on the Dreamcast era ruling out EA Sports which was a big selling point (here in Europe all people was looking to play FIFA). The ease of pirating games, and the abilty of the PS2 of playing DVD movies which was the big thing then, put the last nail in the coffin of the hardware run of our beloved company which otherwise could have competed with the PS2 head to head.

I think the real reason the Sega CD hardware was so under-utilised was the data bus connecting it to the Mega Drive, every game that uses scaling and rotation runs at 256x224@20fps, and games that have both scaling and standard sections will often switch between that lower resolution 20fps mode for scaling and a full 320x240@60fps in the standard section. This issue isn’t actually due to the hardware in the Mega CD being limited, it’s just the Genesis data bus being unable to handle any more pixels per second. This also limits the frame rate of Mega CD videos, and makes it more difficult to include more colours, since the bus can’t handle sending video data to multiple layers. Sega built an incredibly powerful console then bodged it onto an older system that constantly held it back, if it was stand alone it could’ve handled arcade ports in much better condition as well as much more colourful video…

I absolutely agree with the very first part of this video regarding a Master System Mini. I see no good reason for Sega not to release one. Piracy is what caused the Dreamcast's premature death in the United States vs Japan. At the point of them going third party, it had become rampant to the point that any new US Dreamcast title released would have been a loss for them. With the SegaCD, I completely agree all the extra hardware was not needed. The one issue they should have addressed was the number of displayed colors; which wasn't done giving it its crappy, grainy look.

Yeah, being a Sega fan was always an emotional rollercoaster. These were all very good points! I, too, despised the shift to those cheap cardboard Genesis boxes compared to the excellent clam shell box design! One thing that always bothered me is that Sega always seems to forget about their popular series. I agree that Sega should continue to allow their fans to develop more games from lost franchises. Sonic Mania and Streets of Rage 4 were great examples of fan creators knowing exactly what made those classic games special! As a kid, the Sega Genesis was one thing that made me an instant Sega fan. The system just got better and better with age! It got some great exclusives and was one of the few to stand toe to toe with Nintendo! One thing that was a downer about Sega was their questionable business decisions throughout the 90's. After the Genesis, it felt like Sega kept dropping support of their systems quicker than their competitors. Sega was like that friend that sometimes pissed you off, but they're still generally good to you. The fact that such a good game like *Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder* never got ported to pretty much any console (classic and modern) is downright criminal. I played it when I was kid back 1993 in a mini golf arcade only once, but my fond memories of it still stuck with me to this day! The Golden Axe series deserves a grand comeback!

I was always disappointed Sega missed many opportunities to continue installments on some bonafide banger franchises. The price on the Sega CD was a major hurdle at the time. Plus, it felt there weren’t enough must play games. The 32X felt like it was over before it really ever started, back in there day. We all know about the disappointments around the Saturn & Dreamcast consoles - which both have a special place in my heart. Very early on in the Genesis era, I had heard of the modem for the but had never seen it in person. Many years later, I’d learned the story. That would have been an astonishing next level accessory. They absolutely need a Master System Mini. And a Saturn Mini. AND a Dreamcast Mini. For real. Thanks for all your videos. Man, I truly appreciate your efforts! Hey, love the content and videos! Your work is amazing! I have been thru the highs and lows with you. Since the master system days and agree with a lot. One of the lows of being a sega fan for me is the change to the Shining series after 3 on the Saturn. No Dreamcast game, then to not get a strategy game until the Japan only Feather, which seemed to be a distant relative. We had souls, neo and EXA and a remake of the first game on the GBA. So it was kept alive in the west, but with Tears the direction was taken in a dating/ diablo games. We received Resonance on switch in the west but it's a different style and game from the 16 and 32 bit generation.

Sega Japan making plenty of non Sonic / Yakuza games. Some great points made there but I have to challenge one of them. Panzer Dragoon Saga, I know you acknowledged it has its fans but as someone who loved the first two games I still managed to love Saga, its the first rpg game I ever played through and if I'm really honest, how different would a 3rd rail shooter have been! The Saturn needed Saga more than another rail shooter, as good as the panzer games were. I admit, I was initially disappointed until I played the first disc as a demo from a magazine, and I was hooked, I hopped onto the bus to the local game store and became the proud owner of Saga. Ironically, the guy at the store said they only received 3 copies of the game (this was way after release day, too). That was the first time I realised this wasn't gonna be a big seller, and I felt even more lucky to have nabbed a copy and still am to this day 😀.

One disappointment for me, is when Yu Suzuki said that Virtua Fighter 4 was coming to the dreamcast, and then a few months later, sega said it was being released for the PS2 instead.😵 Outrun 2, Fighters Megamix 2, and Panzer Dragoon 3 not coming to the dreamcast, were other disappointments for me too. But I think Sega dropping the dreamcast, like they did with the Saturn, was a huge KO for alot of sega fans, and gamers like me.😧 Anyway, good two in one video. I enjoyed watching the entire thing.👍😄

It's interesting to think about how the last generation of games on any console tends to show us what the console can really do but often gets less sales due to self competition with a newer system by the same company or a new generation hardware competitor which prevents them from making a larger library of well marketed games that really make most of the hardware. Thankfully we have 3rd party upgrades like flash carts and home brews, but it's always interesting to wonder what could have been if older gen. consoles kept somehow being supported and promoted anyway.
