In this week’s video, I wanted to talk about a new pocket utility knife that just got added to the US DLA (US Defense Logistics Agency) supply system. No, it is not as sexy as a Minigun. Neither is a Medical Kit, but we use utility knives and med kits much more often than belt-fed machine guns.
When my buddy Joe heard I wasn’t carrying a switchblade anymore, he asked if I had seen the new utility knife that he had just gotten a NSN (national Stock Number) for. Always open to new kit & training, I told him I would give it a look. I really like this new knife. It’s light at just 4.6 ounces, and has no sharp edges to tear up or snag in your pockets. If I could add one thing to any good folding knife, it would be adding a saw blade; and this puppy has it. So, that caught my eye right off the bat. Now, it’s not American made, like the old Camillus. That would be preferred, but this thing is Swiss quality; very pretty with good features.
So, I tried to break it. I tried hard. I had this knife since SHOT in January and we just filmed this video. If you want a good knife to issue to your privates, without worrying about them getting rolled up in the club, this is going to be a good performer all around. Besides the saw (which is great), I also used the locking wire-stripper/wire-bender a bunch around the house; and the phillips screwdriver doubles as a punch for blasting caps (universal capwell sized). Some will bitch that it does not have a pocket clip. Yeah, fine, but it does have a lanyard hole, so your troops can “dummy cord” it off when they are in the field.
If you are in the US military, you can have your Supply Sergeant order you one. The NSN is 1095-01-653-1166.
If you do not have access to the DLA Supply System, you can reach out directly to Joe or his partner Jerry, and order one directly from from them.
Joe: jtraurig@verizon.net 215-947-0200
Jerry: jrinder24@gmail.com 570-974-6089
Here’s the bonus… Joe gave me a couple extra of these knives to film in this video. So, we are going to give them away to a randomly drawn new subscriber to tacticalrifleman.com. So, if you haven’t already subscribed, click here: www.tacticalrifleman.com, and you could be the lucky guy or girl to get this new knife. To enter you must subscribe to Tacticalrifleman.com by June 30th, 2017 12pm EST. Good luck! Must be in USA and 18+ years of age to win!
Help support Tactical Rifleman by purchasing one of our T-shirts, check them out at: ballisticink.com/collections/...

Thank You for the lesson. When my dad passed in 2010 I found three of the old US utility knives you showed I agree they are great little knives they will be passed down to my son. As for my dad he is resting in piece in FORT ROSCRANS. He is a VIETNAM VETERAN and a GREAT FATHER.

Bought that knife about 2-3 years ago, named Swiss Army "Soldier" knife. Same except no "U.S." on the handle. VERY HIGH QUALITY STEEL. The more I use & carry this knife, the more impressed I am. Clean & oil it sometimes & you'll like it even better. Finally found a handmade belt sheath for it I like. I call it BLATANT carry (the case is snapped shut). Swiss made. Nice!

Hey Carl. We had the old Camillus pocket knives in Grenada. We liberated a hanger full of Angerian red wine and didn't have a way to open the bottles without breaking the bottle neck. When we got home we all bought either German Army or Swiss Army pocket knives with cork screws. The Army still hasn't learned that lesson. RLTW.

I live in the Swiss Knife Valley, owning the Swiss Army variant of this knife for years. Actually bought it for Laser sailing, as the Lake Lucerne water is rather cold what makes the opening of a 'common' pocket knife impossible, the one hand blade is the perfect solution.

I wouldn't say that, i have a Wenger Swiss Army knive with some rubber inlays in the handle. After about 10 years the start to feel sticky like the rubber is aging or something like it. I also have the civilian Version of the Army knive in my kit in the fire department for some years now and i still feel well about it. I also know the german army Version and i don't know what i would Change. The dutch Army also uses a different Version with a second blade without a tip so a parachutist can safely cut his lines when he's stuck.

Bit of trivia here, when you open a new case of C4, you get a utility knife in each new case. Comes packed in it. That Awl blade on it was to let you take a brick and carve out a hole in the C4 so you can place a blasting cap.

I couldn't agree more. It's important to have a very utilitarian general purpose blade that a service member can keep with him at all times. I want to add emphasis on the importance of staying as well equipped as possible in a hostile environment. For an example, I always keep a full sized fixed blade knife on my plate carrier, and because I'm in a weapons platoon, its important I also keep a proper EOD gerber multi tool on my plate carrier as well. In the situation that I need to drop my plate carrier though, I will always have on my blade assist knife as well in my pocket. More and more I'm seeing less bayonets being issued, even though they serve a critical function in an emergency situation.

Just a couple of things.... The old Camilus didn't have a locking blade. just had a very stiff slip-joint in the open position. This new model isn't new to Victorinox. It's their one-hand Trekker model w/ serrated blade and rubber inserts plastic handle. I prefer the stock one myself since resharpening of the partially serrated blade is a headache, and the handles don't offer a huge amount of extra traction compared to the stock version. Also, this very model, minus the black coating, has already been adopted by the Swiss military and German military years ago.

I LOVE my Victorinox Rescue tool..!! This knife looks good too..!! It has the same main blade, flathead screwdriver, Philips screwdriver, bottle opener, seatbelt cutter, window breaker, glass cutting saw, tweezers, toothpick, lanyard, and an awl.. Part of my every day carry along with a cheap folding blade that came with my Leatherman Surge.. I also have a Victorinox Swiss Champ multitool, and it has everything.. My understanding was Germany wanted a replacement for their Utility knife and turned to Victorinox it was the 1st version of the knife. The differences are the blades didn't have the black finish and the scales were olive green without the rubber over molding plus the scales had the German crest without the Victorinox shield. The Swiss Army Adopted the 2nd version almost like the US version without black finish on blades but added the rubber overmolding also lacked the big U.S. for obvious reasons. lol The 3rd Version is the U.S. and in my the the coolest one In my opinion with the black blades. So all three country's adopted basically the same utility knife. You can also buy all 3 versions on the civilian market plus a 4th version Called the "Trekker" not adopted by any military, I'm not sure if the Trekker came before the German version or are all these knives are based on the Trekker.

I'm surprised they (The DOD went for the Swiss made knife), Congress doesn't like things for the US military that don't employ US workers in it's production. But I too used the old US military Pocket knife (AKA the Demo Knife, for it was found in Demolition kits of the day), and was my favorite knife while in the AF in the 1990's. It was based on the the Swiss Army's standard pocket knife / Boy Scout pattern knife when adopted in the 1940's. And I have the standard issue US pocket Knife; the Victorinox "Farmer" same as the US pocket knife but with a saw (a mini me of the Combat Utility Knife); The Victorinox "Trekker" fine edge, shiny blade, with plain black scales, And a Leatherman Wave: To sum it up short and sweet, The Old standard pocket knife still useful and was a great choice by the Army / Navy of the day and I used the hell out of mine. The Farmer is My current EDC..... not too heavy, or over laden with features and wish it was available back in my day inn the service. The new knife is in my Trucks "Get Home Bag" a little big and a little heavier for sure, in my employers eyes too big to carry around the work place.... But for uniformed service use and in the great outdoors... the extra length of saw (more work per stroke ), the Phillips screw driver and the locking make it worth it!!!! I just wish it had the old style awl like the old service knife / BSA knife, but for "spring tensioning" balance Victorinox had to go with the other style. That and a Pocket clip would make it "perfect" IMHO. The Leatherman Wave: Very capable tool and it would be my "go to" on my SAR gear back in the day had it existed in it's current form, but a little heavy for day to day, in my opinion, that and I wish it had a awl in place of the silly eye glass screw driver. Still a great choice despite it's "limits". Either way in my opinion there all great choices from the newest to the oldest.......

In Alox or stainless scales, the Swiss Army knife is not this model. It is the previous smaller issued knife and completely different. The old one is essentially the civilian Pioneer, which is excellent. Thicker blade than the plastic-scaled Victorinox. Most Swiss Army fans don't want a clip. Adds a bulk to the knife. A pouch on the belt, or in the pack. For pocket carry I just add a lanyard that has a little round Turk's Head knot at the end, and the lanyard keeps the knife vertical and easy to pull out. Not that it is tactical.

Say Heah your absolutely right. I only use my knives in the bush. It depends Ofcource what combo I go with. I only have a few knives that I use in the bush. I sometimes use my Cold Steel Black Rhino than my Vintage Myerchin with the nail nick in 440c. and the Marlin Spike to untangle paracord. I also take my Victorinox Delemont Collection Ranger 78 with the Phillips,. But then I found out the Corkscrew works good to untangle paracord so I got the Bokor Tec-Tool City 2.8 in. because it has a Corkscrew a lovely piece of kit. I also have the Victorinox Farmer, It's one of my Fav's. it has just about all the tools I use in the bush. I also have a Camillus Silver Sword. I got it on a trade from someone who's Dad use to work for N. C. R. he used it to cut wire etc. She couldn't open it easy so I traded a Frost Cutlery Peanut for it. It's my E. D. C. and I pouch carry it in a Leather Pouch on my belt. I really like it, for a stainless steel I can get a very keen edge on it. Sometimes I carry my Puma Warden with Saw and the Stag Handles and sometimes my Bokor Hunting Knife Folder with the two large blades. Oh, I also have a couple of Case Knives I carry into the bush, one of them is my Jumbo Trapper that's a Test made by a company for Case, It's a Beauty, I also have a British Army Clasp Knife it has a Marlin Spike and a Can Opener which I use on some Afternoon Delights when a cup of coffee over a open fire and a butcher style hot dog and pork and beans is in order with a fine cigar that beats going to a Mc Dee's scenery any day of the week. Respectfully, TR, I see this as more a utility *tool* than as a utility knife. Personally, though, I like that it's nicely compact and lightweight enough to be kept in a pocket (of some sort) while personnel can have something modeled on a Ka-Bar or Fairburn Sykes as their tactical blade. ... in my opinion...

honestly the one thing that sucks is they should have went with the sewing awl with a hole so you could use it to repair gear/boots or other gear and sew other then that it looks great

Is there a reason to carry this knife if you already carry a multitool? Or fits this the same category as one is none ans two is one?

The only thing I see lacking from this knife is a good sharp seat belt cutter.. Which could be used to quickly cut pack straps, parachute cord, and clothes in trauma situations.. Also an oxygen tank slot cut into one of the attached tools would be a God send to medics in the field.

Even this knife has features that make it illegal in several states/countries... the ability to "flick" it open to full lock, and one-hand opening, with lock, are illegal in Germany and Canada, that i know of, for sure...great knife, but be careful if not on-base in some countries. I have a "civilian" version, with scissors instead of saw, and needs to be opened with fingernail...great EDC around home, but a bit large, "in town"...some people find the blade size intimidating ;-)

when i was in the military 74 - 78 we weren't issued anything like a knife .we werr told not to bring a knife ( a real knife ) even when we were in the field .in fact one time i left my knife and some other stuff in my car at the base under guard and everything in my car was stolen by the guards .
@dalecarpenter8828

they didn't issue bayonets .and the really didn't want to issue intrenching tools ( shovels ) . also when i was in it was just like the movie platoon. there was that group that licked ass and tried to fuck everybody over .untill we went to the handgranede rang and 2 granades came up missing .then they were as sweet as could be .
