The Soviet intervention in Afghanistan in December 1979, the rise of protest in Poland with the Solidarity movement, repressed by martial law established in December 1981 by General Jaruzelski, offer the world the image of an empire throwing its forces armies in the battle to maintain it.
While the new Pope John Paul II goes to Poland to encourage the Poles to fight, the Moscow Olympic Games, boycotted by the West, cannot mask the reality of an empire prey to dissension and whose leaders do not did not understand the meaning of the story. In just five years three party leaders successively disappeared: Brezhnev, Andropov and Chernenko.
