Yes the initial resemblance drew him in cuz she looked like someone he used to love. But once he got to know her separately from Katherine, he fell in love with her individuality completely ❤️ Stelena for the win.

It's funny when Elena asks "Why do I look like her?" and Stefan explains that she's adopted, and actually a descendant of Katherine. Like... the fact that she's Katherine's great-great-great-great (....) granddaughter doesn't explain the fact that they look EXACTLY alike. Only identical twins resemble each other that much.

His whole idea for looking into it is that she was a Gilbert and Katherine a Pierce. Funny thing her being adopted should explain away a Gilbert looking like a Pierce when Elena would have been a Gilbert either way if she got her birth father's name. Couldn't he think some descendant of Katherine must have had a child with a Gilbert without digging for it. He was already sure she wasn't Katherine. Edit: But man. Watching this scene for the first time I was like 😱

I hope that sometime in the series they show a flashback of stefan getting elena out of the car and seeing her face the first time. That would be so awesome!

I love Stefan.. but If ur going to say this then Damon didn’t stalk Elena to make sure she wasn’t Katherine. Ok it took him 10 secs when elena introduced herself when they first met.

Watched this show, stopped at season five cuz I literally felt *sick* when I saw Elena and U-Know-Who and Stefan and The-Blonde-Barbie. Now I just watch seasons 1 and two on a loop, maybe three if I’m feeling it just to see Elena choose Stefan over Damon. STELENA FOR LIFE

I agree ! I watched to the very end of the show to see how it ended, terrible ending. Seasons 5-8 were terrible. I only watch seasons 1-3 for TVD. Stefan and Elena 4ever !

@CallieMulan when the accident happened stefan didnt know it was elena who was in the car, when he went to save them he then realized it was her and that she looked like katherine, then damon also knew about it too, stefan first he met her in the car, then after that he wanted to know her and thats how they met in high school. btw its totally understandable he didnt tell her the whole truth from the beginning, she wouldnt have believed he was a vampire at first anyway

Stefan had a reason - to make sure that this exact lookalike wasn't Katherine. Unlike say, Edward Cullen who became obsessed with a random girl he had no connection to literally overnight

I wonder why the series didnt use the explanation of the book. I heard somewhere that in the books Katherine and Elena were actually twin sisters, hence their exact same appearance.

No she isn't. Katherine is her ancestor but if she were Katherine's daughter then Elena would be 500 years old but she's 16. Nadia is Katherine's daughter. She came into the show in season 5.
