You feel so bad for Stefan here but you know Elena is telling him the truth. She becomes more about his project than someone he loves. Even if there had never been a sire bond the way he handles her transition would have torn them apart. Then there is the fact that to me it never really played like Elena was being honest with herself when she chose Stefan before the bridge. It's not that I don't think she still loved Stefan at that point but two scene keeps me thinking she would have walked away from Stefan in the end no matter what. In season 2's the Last Day after Damon feeds her his blood... Elena tells Stefan this... "He doesn't know what love is." Talking about Damon. Then she goes on to say. "I love you. I know that but forever?" She also tells him here that she thought she'd have a life time to make those kinds of choices. Talking about kids, which vampires can't have. The other scene is where she meets Isabel for the first time. Isabel tells her she must have thought about bcoming a vampire because of Stefan and Elena tells her, quite honestly, she hasn't. I kind of feel like she taught her feeling for Damon not only because of Stefan but because she could walk away from Stefan. He would accept that choice when she decided to. Which by her own statements seem to be exactly what she was going to do. Damon would never be ok with that. He wouldn't force her to stay with him but he would never have left her either. He would stay in her life. Stefan would let go and move on.

Elena wanted to be with Damon, but because he sired her, she had to leave him. “I was ready to fight you on this, but suddenly - every part of my body is telling me that I need to get in this car and leave you.” When she calls him, she’s being literal. “I wish you would just let me come to you." She can’t come to him unless he gives her permission because he sired her. Compulsion is mind control, which is more powerful than the sire bond.
