Anna Marie jo is only their biological mother. Caroline carried them in her womb and raised them so she is their mother in real life afterall.

Anna Marie They are still her babies. She carried them for 9 months, she gave birth to them and she raised them. They are more her babies than Jo's (even though if she hadn't died she would've been an amazing mother!)

Anna Mrie Jo died. She never even knew her babies. Sure, she conceived them. But Caroline carried them for 9 months, gave birth to them, and raised them as her own. They are Caroline's daughters. Caroline and Alaric. Jo would've been an amazing mother if she hadn't died, but she never got that chance.

After Kai killed Jo, their father and the gemini coven, I think they did a spell to protect the twins and I guess they put it into Caroline. But at that point Caroline or Candice in real life was pregnant. So I guess it was a cover to hide/show her pregnancy.
