The Vandal persecution of Catholics during the time of the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa. Part 1 charts their rise and migration from German lands to Africa during which time the Vandals converted to Arian Christianity. The Vandals would persecute Catholic Christians in both Spain and North Africa with the persecution being at its peak during King Geiseric's time followed by Huneric his son. The persecution only stopped when Gelimer the last Vandal King was defeated by a Byzantine army under Belisarius and the Vandal Kingdom annexed into the East Roman Empire.

I’ve become increasingly fascinated by this time period and would love to learn more about the vandals in particular but the literature is so scarce, do you have any specific book recommendations to start with?

Victor of Vita's book on the subject of the Vandal invasion of North Africa is really good. Would really recommend. I'll be using that as a source for the vandal persecution of Catholics in a follow-up video.

Thanks a lot for your excellent Video. Please give us Part II and, if possible, shed some lighjt on the native population in North Africa, those called ''Berbers'', Amazigh, etc. How they lived through the Vandal episode. And also what became of the Vandal population after their defeat by Belizarius. How many were they anyway ? I read in Augustine's ''The Confessions'' that the natives in Carthage referred to themselves as ''Cananeans'' at that time. So I suppose they spoke a dialect of Phoenician and the elite probably mastered Latin as Augustine himself.

A marvellous video !!! However it is vital to note that Arius was never a consecrated Bishop, rather he was simply a prominent Priest. Indeed the clergy gathered at the First Council of Antioch bristled at the statement that they were 'Arians', since “How could bishops such as we-follow a presbyter?” . Furthermore, it must be clarified that Arius role in ‘Arianism’ was not that of a founder of a sect, since throughout most of the 4th and the 5th centuries AD 'Arianism' was in fact a loose and uneasy coalition of those hostile to Nicaea in general, and the word ‘Homoousios’ in particular.

Thx Tobias. Yes quite true regarding Arius and his position. Regarding Arianism being almost an 'umbrella' term Augustine mentions there were over seventy 'heresies' in his time with many of these Christian sects having their own and differing thoughts on the nature of Christ from the Catholic view.

I would recommend doing a video on plotinus' criticism of the gnostics apparently he knew about this group of Christians using some ideas from platonic thought, and plotinus very heavily disagreed with & criticized them ESOTERICA did a great video on it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLxlqMWBteC4Z4k.html

Great video! The map shows Gallicia, but it should be Gallaecia, right? Gallicia being a far later nomenclature. Also, I'd really love if anglo-saxon historians (and spanish) stopped using Spain as a short for Hispania, though I understand that's the current convention. Spain is a modern country, with territories in Africa. Hispania is modern Iberia (Spain AND Portugal).
