Is this the new generation of air transport?
The Varialift Airship burns 80-90% less fuel than current aircrafts and reaches approximately 60% airspeed (IAS) of jetliners.
In this video Sir David King, former Special Representative for Climate Change, UK
Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2013-2017); Senior Strategy
Adviser to the President of Rwanda discusses the airship at the Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The 6th Arctic Circle Assembly took place in Reykjavík, Iceland, 19-21 October.

Alternatives for the safe use of hydrogen in an airship. Fire proof cabin - (Maybe use some of those space shuttle tiles? ) Passenger cabin hung well below the airship attached by cables that could extend toward the ground in the event of a fire? Upper hydrogen air bag separated by a Kevlar heat shield from a lower helium bag that could detach in the event of fire? Make sure the cabin can float in case of water crash?

additional Ideas to make hydrogen airships safe: use sensors that would detect a leak. Build the airship in a way leaking Hydrogen can not accumulate. Have infrastructure, that blows away leaking hydrogen. Have a double hull with N2 (or an other innert gas) in the inbetween space.

I agree with you, that we need to get away from using Helium. And that it is possible, to build an airship with hydrogen, that is save. However, you should also consider H20 as lifting gas.

Question? Helium filled aircraft flying in to freezing temps, what happens to the buoyancy? Unless the balloon itself is heated, the helium will contract and the craft will drop. Just look at helium filled balloons left outside in the winter.

Airships have been flying in the arctic for about a100 years. I think those were hydrogen airships, though, but the same principles should still apply. They already have to vary the amount of gas in the bags based on the effects of altitude on air pressure, so it should make sense for them to just be able to put more in when they are in colder temps and just vent some when it warms up.

Which is fine as long as it doesn't crash or develop a leak. Hydrogen would certainly be extremely useful for these endeavors, but ultimately won't be used because of its reputation and track record. It's just too risky - if something goes wrong, it'll go VERY wrong.

@@joaodecarvalho7012 regardless, a giant bag full of hydrogen exploding is still risky. It's unlikely they'd do that. On the plus side, we have stronger and lighter materials (e.g. carbon composites) than they had when they made airships back in the day, so we can offset some of the reduced takeoff weight that comes with switching to Helium. Helium quantities and pricing is still an issue, but if they work out fusion energy we should be good on that front too.

Two things are immediately WRONG with Varialift........ (1) compressing helium inside "tanks" involves too much complexity, cost, unnecessary weight, lag time between starting the compression process while in flight and it taking effect; and most of all.....too little effect. (when ALL helium is compressed, it only leaves an AIR filled envelope, which is still susceptible to winds (see Airlander deflation for reference) and (2) the idea that any payload can be safely and securely managed as a "sling" load is laden with extreme hazard, especially when an airship has little or no means to vary thrust to ANY direction. However, Varialift is absolutely RIGHT about two things......(1) the use of aluminum for both interior framing and exterior hull....and (2) the method they propose to use to build airships OUTSIDE of any hangar (using track mounted outdoor scaffolding) Only Turtle Airships has the correct airship design, manufacturing process, and business model that will be fully successful

I had a similar reaction to the compressed helium idea too. I mean, gas cylinders are heavy and how much of the gas you're compressing will be required to lift the stupid things? I can understand the desire to not waste helium, but if compressing lifting gas was a viable method it surely would have been tried before, if memory serves helium used to be far more expensive (back in the 1930s) than it is now and compressing gas into bottles is not advanced tech! Have they investigated liquefying the helium? :D

It makes you wonder how supposed scientific minds come up with this crap. Blimp Technology is out dated, impractical, unreliable and not cost effective. I stole a design concept from my twelve year old Nephew recently, its for a SkyCraft that will change air travel forever. The idea is to design a massive plane shaped like a floating cardboard box, which would be tethered to the ground in Geostationary location by 1,000,000 Gummy Bears all holding a strand of Candy Floss keeping the floating SkyCraft in place. Instead of the plane flying from one destination to another as current out dated technology dictates, the concept of SkyCraft is for the destination to come to you. This will be achieved by a world wide network of Skyway Highways connecting all the Major Capitals of the world along which the Gummy Bears would drag the floating SkyCraft as the world rotated beneath them. The reduction in Green House Gas emissions worldwide this system will generate is expected to exceed any increases caused by the necessary global uptick in Gummy Bear Production required to maintain a regular international service around the world. Passengers would board the SkyCraft at major city SkyPorts and utilising the Earths natural tendency to rotate the Gummy Bears would use the Earths spinning effect to relocate each SkyCraft from one point on the globe to another. Artificially Intelligent Gummy Bears are being developed to enhance the possibility of passengers actually arriving at their preferred destination and it is hoped to have a fully functional Gummy Bear capable of sentient thought by next Wednesday afternoon around 3 o'clock. Passengers would board at Heathrow or any other Major City and as the Earths rotation began, the Gummy Bears would run like fuck along the prepared routes until the Preferred Destination comes around.- longer legged versions of Gummy Bears are in the early stages of development which, when integrated into the system, should cut journey times by about three minutes or so. Passengers would arrive in New York without actually moving at all and disembark with no jet lag or Travel sickness whatsoever. The SkyCraft would be constructed of a material current used in the production of Sainsbury Carrier Bags and finished in a rather nice mustard yellow livery, with sort of blue lightening bolts on the front and back and big pink lettering saying SkyCraft down the side, (Nephew's drawing can be supplied to interested parties) . Each SkyCraft would be capable of carrying over 20,000 passengers, with on board amenities which would include a 1,500 acre park complete with boating lake and ice cream Vendor. There will be an all weather football pitch with facilities to accommodate live musical events for up to 1,231 people. Passengers may make use of the onboard Vehicle Servicing facilities where our skilled mechanics will service your car while you fly. The shopping Plaza will feature various Major Retail Stores and Fast Food Outlets as well as fine dining establishments. Each SkyCraft will feature three homeless vagrants who will wander freely among guests and one of those smelly beggar people you try to avoid on your way to work each day. A disco will allow passengers to dance the night away as they journey to the far flung corners of the globe. I have set up a Consortium (me and my Wife) under the umbrella of Floaty Carboard Box Gummy Bear Travel Inc and am looking for investors. Anyone interested in getting in on the ground floor of this exciting opportunity to reconfigure air travel well into the next errr.... ten minutes, Should contact me at the number below.
