Not exactly true. There is an ORIGINAL member of the group still alive. George T Babbitt. If you were to meet him you had better salute him too! In 1998 George played drums with the Ventures just before his retirement.

@@jeffreymcfadden9403As far as I understand there is no clear ”original drummer”. In the beginning they used whoever was free at the moment for their recordings, and live performances, and the first one who stayed with them for a longer period was Howie Johnson, so I guess he is the closest one to be called their original drummer.

He was indeed great. True, he isn't widely recognized as one of the greatest, but so many who are recognized as such are often wildly overrated (I won't mention names, but I'll say this, for every fabricated "king of blues/rock" there are a dozen amazing true artists under the radar). So I'm fine with knowing and loving him for all these years, without him having a spot on some Rolling Stone list etc.

The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame was created for musicians of this caliber & it's a shame it's become a joke because it was not meant to be . I was lucky as hell to have seen The Ventures with Nokie in the 70s & they were the reason we need the hall to chuck out the schmucks that don't belong there & there are so many that need to be in the trash heap. These guys were legends & will always be. So many of us that play owe them so much .

I was born in 80 and this was def my parents music. Even through the 90s and all the retro stuff over the years, I never came around to it. But for some reason today at 43 years old I just decided to do a ventures dive and man, it is impossible to not feel happy while listening to these guys. I'm also a guitar player and maybe I'm just coming around to more of the cleaner tone stuff (definitely a metal and hard rock guy), but purely from a guitar standpoint, this is as classic as guitar tone gets.

@@scottstevens3553 I didn't say that didn't happen, but the Ventures started as a band in the late 1950's, then as a guitar combo with Bob on lead and Don on rhythm, that was what I said. That doesn't contradict what you said. However it wasn't a pure replacement. For some time Bob played lead on some songs and Nokie on others, and eventually Nokie played lead on most of the stuff until he left the band in 1969 and Gerry took over the lead.
Is it any wonder how that electric guitar surf sound caught on in the early 60's. Nokie Edwards almost looks like he's on auto pilot. If he missed a note, I didn't hear it. He influenced so many players. That sound he gets is one in a million.
